The 114 and 115 don't get enough love. It makes me so happy that Pierre loved this car enough to spend that kind of money bringing it back to its former glory. You wanna talk about going through a car from top to bottom 😃.

I'm SO glad that you're evolving into the self proclaimed "guru" of the W114 and W115 chassis. Mercedes Gods know that no one has stepped up to that mantle anywhere, which is shocking given that there are still 200K+ cars running on global roads. A very welcome specialization. A video highlighting the top simple but essential restorative maintenance items (with instructions) would be very useful. For instance, we know that the blower motor fan is NLA from Mercedes but no one knew that the R107 motor is compatible. That's an example of Guru wisdom right there!

Congratulations, an excellent job. I love W114, I had one and it just fantastic, smaller than my fathers's W108 and my W111, it was easier to turn in sharp corners. I saw a program in DW (Dutch Welle, the German international tv) where they interviewed the German folk who designed the flight instruments for the Luftwaffe before WWII and that until today are the standard for all aeroplanes. DW asked him why being so rich he still drove an old W114 and he responded "The W114 is the best car in the World"

Wow, what a beauty! You saved another one! I had a chance years ago to buy a 1970 220D for $700. Same or similar color. I drove it, and it ran and drove great. I've kicked myself for years for not buying it! Didn't like the looks of them years ago, but now, I see them differently! Love it. Keep up the good work!

The w114/115 is one of the best looking Mercedes in my opinion. Clean crisp lines, not heavy looking and fun to drive. That car is a true beauty. So happy to see that some of these cars are getting the love they deserve. BTW, I bought a brand new factory trunk pan for my 220D back in 2005/6 for $170. I just started assisting my best friend in the restoration of his (slim bumpers) 1973 MB 280C, silver metallic car, with black tex interior AND Euro headlamps! ALL new Genuine seals and weatherstripping is now done, working on suspension, interior and fuel system. Both front window regulators were able to be saved w/ new bushings, rear regulators still need a game plan! I think this is already a BEAUTIFUL car, and just needs the time, money and work it truly deserves.

Always very good contents! I have restored a Dec 1973 W114.015 230.6 (it was and still is one of my dream cars) and I know what rust and dealing with carburetors and so on... All the doors had to be taken care, in all, the only good thing in terms sheet metal was the floors, witch they were good. The trunk bed... the doors the rocker panels... all with issues of corrosion. It was a long 6 years but now is done and it makes me smile a lot! Continue with the good work! I'm a fan! Cheers! ... and yes, the M110 is a dream engine! ;) :D

Have a 1971 250C . Been working steadily on it. Seems like never done though. Az car had for like for ever. 40+ years. Was my father's, hes been gone 12 years now. My duty now. Fuel gauge on the fritz, might be sending unit. Playing hell finding map pockets for it too. Think a MB repair shop stole them. My father was sharp mechanic but when he got in his 80s he could not turn a wrench anymore and was at the mercy of thieves. Have 3 MB and I'm only one person. Have @200k on the 560sl, 200k on the E320, and 91k on the 250c. Almost a half million miles together on these so I guess I'm doing something right. Pierre, thanks for all you do. God bless you!.

Thanks for mentioning me, Pierre! I’m still sorting my 280C. Engine still doesn’t run all that great. I keep tweaking the carb and timing. Hesitates and slight miss. Tons of power once it’s moving along! I’m afraid to do a compression test because I don’t want to Know lol! Last month we replaced front and rear subframe bushings. It’s coming along slowly. Enjoyed this video and that’s a great W114 sedan! Love the blue color!

I would check your cam timing. We just had this issue on a 1985 280 SE where the intake cam was retarded by one tooth. It caused a bunch of running problems for the engine. While we initially thought that injection problems were to blame, it turned out that cam time was the problem the whole time

I've bought a '74 280 sedan in forrest green for $1500. A good runner, but needs various degrees of attention to almost everything besides engine, carb and transmission. Some rust holes on floor pans will require new pieces. I am taking it one thing at a time and enjoying driving it and only making it better with time. I can't wait until mine looks as good as yours! The thing is i only had to use a few pieces of external trim from the w114 230.6 i was lucky to get for a parts car. The 114 had already been raided for random parts before me but now after watching this i cant stop looking at it. Its an even better body than my w115 was but has lots of things missing, your idea of a Mercedes based streetcar has me interested. Well, the left side trunk floor shows to still be available, part number 115-618-05-61. Though, that's only a small part of the trunk floor. Sadly, Mercedes will no longer be remaking/offering parts as stock runs out. It doesn't matter if it's a part that is detrimental to the cars running/driving or not. Support of the Classics is now limited to 300SL, Pagodas, and maybe 190SL's. So any body pieces for a chassis such as a W114/W115 will have to be made by someone else. Simple enough, right? Not really. It costs $7,000-$10,000 just to set up tooling to make a part, and even then there is always a minimum order to be placed. 100, 500, maybe even 1,000 units. Obviously, the more parts that are made the more affordable each unit is, but even then 95% of people will not pay the necessary price for the part. For some reasons people are hung up on NOT putting more into their than it's worth or what they paid for it. ......which makes no sense. Putting more into the car than it's worth is just how the game is played. It's what must be done if you want a worthy cause. There are only a literal handful of cars in this world that are worth more than it costs to restore them. Most of us aren't fortunate enough to own such a car, so we gravitate towards the more sensible (to us) models. So hats off to the owner of this W114 for spending the money necessary on this W114 to take care of what was necessary.

While you're right about the body parts, I don't believe this applies to mechanical parts. There are always customers will to pay for the quality parts needed to restore their cars or to keep them running. Sadly this is why Mercedes Classic Parts division is becoming a high end mechanical restoration division only. What's worse, no one even bothers to write to them requesting parts that are NLA, which only reconfirms their wrong belief - that cars like the Mercedes W114 W115 have no demand for support.

Thank you for clarifying the cost of this. went to check out a 114 '74 240d Thursday. It had rust in the back left footwell and the cap really danced on the Blowby test. However a very nice looking, hobby kind of car that deserves some money put into it. No a.c. I was tempted but due to engine and rust i ended up getting an '83 300cd, which has its own challenges but only 182k miles vs the unknown mileage on the 114. Perhaps I can get it your way for a review

Hi Pierre I own one of these cars, it’s a ‘72 250c. My father gave it to me last year after owning it himself for the past several years. I wouldn’t call it a lawn ornament since it runs, but it’s in need of lots of TLC. I’m currently doing some work on it over the winter, things like new pads and rotors, calipers, new brake hoses, new shocks. I did the rear sway bar end links too. It’s been kind of a nightmare and a slow process as we’re in Canada, it’s a “Canadian car”.. and most things are seized up, plus I’ve been having to learn a lot along the way. I have an issue with my gauges, the odometer doesn’t work, the gauge lights don’t come on. There’s also a small clock in the centre that l’m not able to adjust. Also the blower motor is in need of repair. I haven’t a clue on where to start with these repairs to the gauges and blower motor.. how do go about gaining some insight or a walkthrough? Parts? Thanks. 🙏

From what I’ve seen on my two cars, the seats can be in great aged condition but the foam core and horsehair stuffing deteriorates and ‘snows’ on the floor. My SL has the green synthetic horsehair and the SEL has the horsehair. I’m used to dealing with horsehair with my antique furniture reupholstery I’ve done. My mother taught me.

I brought home a 1971 250C yesterday. The body is in good shape with a new respray. The Zenith Carbs stumble badly, but ran good enough to get it on and off the trailer. I was told the fuel tank has been removed and cleaned and the lines flushed. The Transmission Linkage is sloppy, The seat leather(?) is nice without wear or rips but front seats collapse when sitting in them. The car has been converted to electronic ignition which I plan to de-convert when I can figure out what to buy to restore to original. I have manuals, including the large chassis book with the electrical prints and a copy of what appears to be the engine manual. There are also 2 digital copies of manuals. So.. Where do I start? Checking float levels? I know I need to get the car running and driving before I do anything else. My mechanical abilities are better than average, but have not worked on Mercedes before. I also just signed up to support on Patreon Thanks.. Gary Moore

I know I'm late to the ball, but I kinda stumbled on to a Mercedes, saw it, fell in love with it, and was able to drive it home with bad motor mounts and fuel leak. I've been out cleaning and thinking about how to proceed for a week or so. I want to drive it, I thought I was crazy and now see I am not alone, would be appreciative of advice on how to proceed, because I want to drive it. Specifically mine is a 1969 220d manual signal red, black interor, in really good condition for a 50 year old car and is rust free, I cannot find any after close inspection. I know cars pretty well, but this is my first old Mercedes, and although this car is slow, it just has a charm that I can't seem to shake off.

I have a w114 280 with a m110 that I have been working on for the last 2 years that was somewhat similar to this blue car in the sense that it was a driveway ornament (engine was seized, seats were really bad, and alot more). I have the car to almost perfect working condition aside from a strange issue when driving for more than 30 - 40 minutes at freeway speed. The car will start to jerk like crazy and sound like its going to stall, with no power if the gas is depressed (Going down hill is the only time the car wont act up (cant always be going downhill)). The carb works perfect but I cant seem to locate the issue, Im thinking its a vacuum leak (maybe the exhaust is getting plugged or one of the gas or oil caps isn't sealed properly) of some sort, or a slow oil leak into the spark plugs (oil pressure will drop to 30 or below on the dash gauge, while driving, once it starts to act up). I don't hear any misfire in idle, even if you come to a stop once it starts to act up. Any thoughts??

Still have to pump gas pedal twenty times to get to start cold, once warm easy start. Checked out your zenith video, could not get cold idle up much, but I did get choke plates down. Recently checked timing and it needs to be advanced to get it to run good, if I put it on TDC it runs like crap. the timing mark is steady, no jumping around. I think if I get the idle up, then maybe I can bring the timing back to where it belongs. Any ideas? It runs pretty good when warmed up.

Dear Pierre, thks for making clear what it costs to rebuild a /8 properly. Though I like my 6.3 really much I second you that driving a 6-cyl. in a /8 is more fun than in the comparably antique W108/9 due to their basic construction in the fifties. Enjoyed your video! 904? Rgds, Oliver

Pierre , I finally got to catch up on some of your videos. This is quite admirable., that you put in that kind of work into this car, but on a W114 Sedan ? It would only make sense to do this on a rust free car. They are still out there in California, and that state hates old cars, so they are trying to wipe them off the face of the earth. I just picked up a 1974 rust free 240D/8 for the price of a new tire.....

honestly, it's because the new leather is not great. It is not a faithful reproduction of the original stuff, it's not dyed right or tanned properly. My preference is towards original leather all the way

I owned a few classic cars ,, bmw 2500 ,datsun 240z, peugeot 504, in 2005 I bought an early 1968 w115 220 diesel .. It wasn't fast ,0 to 60 in 3 minutes on a good day .. But I grew on me and the rest of the family ,,my children gave him the name Klaus .. We had a few cars back than ,but the only one always reliable Klaus .. Minus 20 celcius ,,,watching that spiral glowing up in the dash ,pulling the starting thingy, ,lol And huffing and puffing he came to life .. Drove it 5 years only some welding done ,,and one day my ex wife wrecked it ,actually she wrecked a new vw Passat. . But Klaus wasn't anymore .. But he never got out of my head ,,had a bmw524td nice car but 3 years back I stumbled on a 1970 W114 250ce ..one of 19k build ..the only way you can get that car from me is ripping it out of my dead hands .!! It's an unbelievable car ,,it drives like a modern car disc brakes front and back. 170hp ..6 cyl..the doors close like a vault door. Graublau with ivory leather ..did I mention that I love that car !?

I have a ‘72 250C that I’ve owned for many years. It ran well except for restarting in hot weather. I tried to insulate the fuel line, but it wasn’t enough. Finally I switched to ethanol-free gas and now it reliably restarts when hot. I’ve got other issues, including the fact that Senior Management no longer allows me to turn a wrench. Sigh.

Hi. Best regards from Europe. I restore 1970 US spec W114 250 coupe.Black with originaly white roof. A few notes about your sedan car. 1.wool lacquer is uneven, too tick and down.Must be redone. 2.Head light bazels are down.Foogy and cracked.Thats typical for us spec cars.I do polish them and put layer of plastic laquer. Cracks stay but you dont see them.To buy new them is a challenge. 3.What year is a car? Looks early w114 car.But interrior from late w 115.Steering wheel, central console, seats are from late model. Mirror is from early w114. And one mirror only.Thats right. But there are original new right hand mirrors for a 100$ on ebay.I would put it on for a safety reasons. Radio from later mercedes model or wrong at all. So for me it looks a bit Lego car. Those cars will go up in value a lot.So all must be in proper way if you want to get profit. Thanks for great videos and keep doing Sir.

you may have a leaking brake booster. block off the vacuum line to the booster and see if the car runs any better. Also, is the vacuum pump on the back of the engine damaged? if the booster is leaking you can send it here for rebuilding www.pwrbrake.com/ did the person who rebuilt the carb use a factory service manual while doing the work? or did they just wing it? that carb is as complex as a fuel injection pump. if you have additional questions feel free to email me at mbownersforlife@bellsouth.net
