I’m running a 9mm M&P Shield with the Apex trigger, TFO sights, and MagGuts springs & followers. I pumped about 600 rounds through it without a hiccup before giving it a clean bill of health. With an extended capacity of 10 +1 and the handling characteristics of a larger pistol, its definitely worth considering for a comfortable and dependable EDC. Because of this I’ve benched my G26; replacing it with the Shield.

Gunnar Paternal I was an inch away from buying a Glock 19, but after I personally watched my friends G19 stovepipe when another friend kept limp wristing it... I later watched a video on KZbin where a guy shot his Sig 320 with a TWO FINGER GRIP (was TRYING to force a stovepipe!), and he still couldn't get it to fail!!!!! If i break a finger, so then I can't get a FIRM grip on my G19, then it WILL stovepipe! I could literally blow-off TWO FINGERS, and then shoot my 320 with a weak-ass two finger grip, and it WON'T FAIL! I know that the chances of being in a situation where I can only get two fingers on my handgun are slim-to-none, but MURPHY'S LAW is all I have to say about that... I don't want a gun that will have a FTE because my grip isn't HIGH ENOUGH... What if I'm literally being attacked, and I draw my weapon; fire a round, but it misses! WELL, I didn't have a PERFECT grip, so then it stovepiped I can't clear the failure, and chamber a new round, so I died while fighting with the guy...

Do you know why you can fire it with two fingers & not force a stovepipe? Boreaxis* The Glocks boreaxis is super high=your hand is literally right next to where the slide comes back. Sig is the exact opposite! There is like more than half an inch between your hand & the slide! The US Navy got the Sig 226 for almost nothing, and thank God that the 320/XM17 is the Army's new sidearm! The military DESERVES the best of the best... I'm not saying the Glock is BAD, either! I'm just saying that it isn't as good as the 320... I have TWO 320's, and I love them both :-D

Although I own a G17, a G19, and a G26, I usually carry the 26 with the factory +2 extension, giving me 13 total rounds, and carry a G17 magazine for a reload. For me, that is the perfect combination of size/weight while still having a decent magazine capacity. I occasionally carry the 19, but the extra weight and grip length is noticeable.

Just wanted to add something to the caliber selection portion. You don't want to go with something too small, but you also don't want something too powerful. When I picked out my wedding band at the local jewelry shop, the owner had a massive revolver on his hip. Naturally I asked if it was a .357, he laughed and said .357s are for wimps, and he would rather shoot someone once with the 454 Casull than multiple times with a smaller round. That was 2 years ago, and I went back 3 months ago to find my wife a present, and he was there, but this time had a m&p 9 on his hip. I asked him where the hand cannon went and he said, he finally went to the range, and realized he could only take one shot, after that he would flinch and miss. He can shoot and connect with the 9mm all day. The point of my story is this, all of the calibers Reid listed will get the job done if you do your part, but you have to be able to do your part with that caliber. If the caliber beats the crap out of you (I know some who flinch with .40s) to the point that you wont put a lot of trigger time behind it. Whatever minimal gain you think you are getting in power with a bigger caliber, becomes irrelevant when you miss your shots.

I bought my first Glock a Gen 3, 17, about a year ago and I admit I turned it into a KZbin video sampler thinking it would be a great gun to personalize and make my own. I installed a OEM 3.5 pound trigger connector and spring which completely eliminated the stacking trigger, which I hated and now it is "butter", extended mag release, extended slide lock release, extended take down release, talon grip tape, self polished stock barrel, "just because I liked the way it looked", ZEV magwell and last but not least XS Big Dot sights. I also believe that Gaston Glock knows exactly what it takes to make a great gun, but this one is just a little better in a lot of ways, "at least for me" and it makes me more enthusiastic about owning the firearm and I learned a lot about the gun along the way. Thank you Reid for having the courage to break free of a life that was making you unhappy and going out and making your life what you wanted it to be, you are now living the American Dream!

I agree that semi auto is the way to go. Revolvers have been out of date for 104 years. For close contact situations I put an extended (factory threaded) barrel on my G19. It still won't work if an attacker has the presence of mind to grab the slide and hold it out of battery. But it should work in heated situations where it's pressed against the target.

Good point about your comparison of the 26 and 19. For the minimal size difference, there's no point to going to a 26. I say this from experience, having both a 23 and 27. The 27 stays in the safe and hasn't seen daylight in a real long time. I've spent a lot of wasted money over the years as well. But, like I always tell the wife, "at least I'm not spending it in a bar"......well, at least not at this minute. Great video Reid!
@MrRiley8519 жыл бұрын
Steve S i think it depends on preference and body type. speaking as a smaller statured guy i have found a 26 with a 10 round mag with +1 extension gives me just enough to get a full grip but it conceals a bit easier than a with 15 round mag. also from appendix carry point of view a shorter slide keeps my pea shooter off my pee shooter :)
@steves84749 жыл бұрын
MrRiley851 I don't blame you for not wanting to mess with the pee shooter! I guess it all boils down to personal preference, individual ergonomics, and how the weapon is deployed/carried. I can see where the G26 in 9mm would be a better option than the G19 under those circumstances. The G27 in .40 cal is a bit snappy without the extra pinky hold, even with it. That's why I replaced it with a S&W Shield in 9mm. I find that this is a much more comfortable option for me, and I carry it more often than I did the G27. Not a fan of the Shield in .40 cal though. If given the choice, I'd opt for 9mm all around, but that's just my personal opinion.
@DigitalHaze655369 жыл бұрын
Steve S I agree. I have glock's 26 through 17 in 9mm, and the 23 and 22. I never bothered with the G27 because the G26 "bites" my finger a little bit between the mag and the frame. In 9mm it's just slightly annoying, in .40 it'd probably hurt or even draw blood. I also have an M&P .40C so that's my "small" .40 anyway. (and it's the smallest gun I'd recommend in that caliber.) I also just bought a shield in 9mm. (I can't see .40 being great in a shield either, the round count is just getting too low for my liking) I need to test it and get a holster before carrying it though, but it feels great in the hand and I love the slim grip!
@steves84749 жыл бұрын
DigitalHaze65536 Dittos on the feel of the Shield, mine has a great trigger and is really accurate despite its small size. I've been carrying it in an Alien Gear IWB holster since I got it, so far a great piece of gear especially for the price and warranty. I was always a Glock fan, until this latest Gen4 version was introduced to me, now not so much. One reason is that they changed the finish from the Gen3, and it is no where near as durable, especially on the sights. In certain light, the glare makes it almost impossible to get a good sight picture. Again, this is just my experience/opinion with the latest version.

Reid, I think it's great that you are not afraid to say it like it is when comes to choosing a semi auto over a revolver. Not that common of a statement to be heard. To many if.. ,but she can't.., What if it malfunctions..., blah blah blah. If ANY person is going to make a commitment to carry, carry quality, learn it inside and out and don't make excuses to carry any thing less. If an off brand inexpensive .32 or.380 is the only thing in persons budget, I would simply say keep saving until you get something worth having. The last thing you want is a false sense of security in a bad situation. Just My Opinion.

I’ll agree with you on having a full grip. I’m older and have bad arthritis in my hands so having a longer grip really makes a difference. Caliber is a personal choice and I don’t care what people shoot. Having been in the emergency medical field I had the opportunity to see gunshot wounds from various calibers and believe me they are all effective if put in the right area. And honestly knife wounds are way more effective in most instances. Saw a guy who got shot by a glock 19 hit 15 times and lived not one bullet hit a vital organ and most passed threw learned later they we’re all solids but still not sure even with expendables it would have been fatal. Maybe but the pattern was everywhere on this guy and from the report all came from very close range like less than 3 feet so the angels were with this guy.
