My Grandfather drove these steam trains out of the Melbourne depot. I remember just how dirty the yards were but super impressed as a kid.

Sadly, my interest in steam trains developed only after I'd left home in East Geelong. But I well remember them pulling us to and from Melbourne. In the late 50s, the premier train on our line was the 5.10 pm Flier from Spencer Street. It was non-stop and took 55 minutes behind one of those R class. Thank you for recovering these 3xtracts.

I remember in the 1950s after the VFL football games; at East Geelong they had trains waiting some with Rs others with B class diesels to speed football fans express to Melbourne

Remember these like it was yesterday, the Geelong/Queenscliff salt train used come come past the bottom of our street every afternoon during the week, and around Xmas time you could watch the holiday locos bring kids Xmas parties from the Geelong industries heading to the beach at Queenscliff…… a simpler time.

What year roughly . I used to catch the footy trains (10.30 from Spencer St ) .about 66 & 67. Was there much steam left then. The footy trains were hauled by B Class’s. I enjoyed the train ride almost as much as the footy, gas lights in the carriages , big foot warmers in the morning.

Wonderful memories except, when they parked 50ft from my front fence, in Derby road in Herne Hill. LOL

dont have all the information on hand but i believe one or two have been on static display at the puffing billy line in the past, some have moved to the bellarine line, the steam shovel is in operational use at lake goldsmith and is used for tourism. no. 11 is either awaiting restoration and has been moved to the bellarine line. t413, originally d1 was a later diesel commissioned and later bought by vr and is preserved

The R class. Great locomotive and wasted. Trashed in 15 years. Terrible.

They might have had a better service life if they had not arrived at the same time as the B class diesel, and VR going diesel for motive power.

I’ve come to the conclusion watching all these that Vicrail and indeed the staff were totally useless keeping these engines looking clean, well maintained. I sting think I’ve seen an engine except the SOP that didn’t look as if it works have been scrapped even when most engines were steam. In fact it looks as if the drivers just walked away from the engines at the end of the day with little pride. Overseas drivers took pride in engines and would keep them looking good as much as they could

Look at pictures on BR at the end of steam - they were just as filthy. Once the decision to replace steam was made maintenance and cleaning was drastically cut back...
@tsv20873 жыл бұрын
Mate that this point they really couldn't be stuffed. Most of the engines would be gone in a matter of months. And VR wasn't going to put in money fixing them. Once they broke down that was it.
@Mopar-Pioneer3 жыл бұрын
probably because overseas drivers had their own assigned engines. Vicrail drivers were in a different loco every day
