Conde took advantage. He (Conde) should have kept his hands off of Mary and should have told Mary to reconcile with her husband and Mary should have NEVER, NEVER ended up keeping Elizabeth's intentions towards Conde secret from Francis. Conde knew that screwing the Queen was treason and Conde knew that Mary was messed up. As for Mary, she knew what the penalties would be for adultery/treason and she really never appreciated the realities that Catherine and Francis faced. Catherine did all she could to end up helping Mary through it all, but Mary would not listen and it is clear that Mary was determined to NOT step up and take responsibility. Catherine did ALL she could to help Mary get through her role as Queen Regnant and Queen Consort and as she did through her life, Mary gave good advice the middle finger.

I love Megan Follow's performance here. Just there sheer emotion that she puts behind everything and her reasoning. Mary may not understand it but the politics behind it is very cut throat and needed to survive in those times. You could not be seen as weak or else the other monarchs will descend on you like a pack of hounds. Catherine understood that, Mary did not.

"It was a choice." That in a nutshell. Conde knew that adultery was wrong and knew that fucking a Queen was a big NONO and he then proceeded to rebel against Francis and attacked all sorts of villages and so many others. Mary was a spoiled brat who had never had to make choices since she was born at the top and it is frustrating that Mary would do tons of stupid things. The first episode during the plague she murdered the son of Narcisse as a first resort and killed who knows how many others. She killed Count Vincent at that banquet and decided to kill so many others along the way. She murdered various others and had no problems marrying Bash despite the fact that it would have resulted in Catherine's execution. She keeps trying to be 'better' than Catherine, but never had to suffer the way Catherine did. The life of any leader is terribly lonely and dangerous, but Mary just would not learn.

Whoo...this scene was epic! Catherine was sepectacular...her concern for her sons and the monarchy outweighed everything else at all costs. Mary has a more diplomatic conciliatory approach. Mary would be more effective today, but in the harsh realities of Machiavellian 16th century Europe, Catherine's approach was necessary.

But she isn't hurt by him for nothing. It was his fault for not letting her in on why he changed his mind regarding the protestants. If he had told both Catherine and Mary about the blackmail and what it was regarding she would've never have been raped because the protestants wouldn't have stormed the castle from the choices Frances made. So yes she blamed him because he didn't want to include her, thinking he was protecting her but in the end it did more harm then good. Her going to Conde however was stupid, however. He should've just been the friend she needed nothing more. But they needed drama for the show so they weren't rushing to Frances' death and her eventual downfall that actually happened in history. Honestly, I wished they deviated from history and made a "what if" drama instead.

I do know Mary was quite hypocritical during this scene, and do primarily agree with Catherine; I believe that Catherine shouldn't have gone to such measures to defend the French crown from the possibility that Antoine may continue to invade. While both Conde and Mary were committing treason during the affair, keep in mind Catherine abducted a baby- of which had not even reached his second birthday, Mary's Godchild and best friend Lola. Both are completely innocent in this. And Catherine isn't sorry for any of that pain she caused Lola, John, or Francis. She lead her son to believe his dear son had been murdered, making him think he was holding his blood in his arms.

Not only that but I cannot believe how vicious people are being towards Mary. Yes she made many mistakes (that she admits even in this scene, and is later willing to wait for Fracis's forgiveness for years if need be) but do none of these people realize that she was traumatized? Brutalized. She is an emotional mess this season because has not yet recovered. And yet everyone is willing to forgive Francis for all the wrongs that he had done to her. I am not saying that Francis is bad either- I am just saying that they were two people in horrible situations most of the time with conflicting interests and love wasn't enough to keep their relationship perfect. If people understand that for Francis, why not for Mary?

@@user-mn3ok8im2l Dude, the only reason why she ran off with Bash and wanted to put him on the throne instead of Francis is because she was trying to save Francis's LIFE. And she was right! If she had married Bash, Francis wouldn't have been murdered. But then Nostradamus misread a vision and Francis told Mary and it all went to hell. She saved Francis when it matter, she stabbed Conde and saved Francis's life and his throne. It was her actions that led to Conde doing what he did, but she did it out of legitimate trauma. She had been brutalized and needed him to be able to breathe freely again. And when it all came crashing down, she protected her husband. She later defended Conde's life AFTER he no longer could commit and harm against Francis and the Valois line. I just can't believe how easily you write of the fact that Francis is directly responsible for Mary being raped. But if you want to play the "he was blackmailed, it was because of someone else" then the same applies to Mary. She would have never gone to Condo had Francis not failed to protect her, his wife.

I think Catherine in this moment was great. She is unforgiving and brutal and the thing that pisses me off in this scene is Mary. I used to really like Mary, but she's a crafty little devil in this scene and the one where Francis exiles Catherine. Mary cheated on her husband with Conde, then betrayed him to get back together with Francis and has the nerve to start questions Catherine's allegiance to her son. I think she took this opportunity to shift the focus away from her betrayal and jump right back on the overly righteous morally correct horse and ride it off into the night. Mary talks about the grief Catherine coursed her son? What about the grief she caused her husband when she slept with his cousin leading to a massive siege that could have ended the Valois line? Where was her moral compass when she burned alive the man who raped her? Hell, Francis went on a warpath and hanged all the protestants to send a message. Mary is a huge hypocrite and Elizabeth was 100% right about her cousin innate ability to bewitch Men with her beauty.

The character of Mary, throughout this entire show and not just in season 2 when trauma is used as her excuse for all of her actions, is absolutely terrible at taking responsibility for anything, or providing any real amends or apologies for anything. She seems to always find a way to turn blame to anyone BUT herself, or she takes blame, but make sure to add that someone else is wrong too. It is a real character flaw.

I'm like Mary you almost got everybody slaughtered in the castle over trying to feel alive again by sleeping with another man, seriously WTF!?

But this was also a problem that carried on throughout the show, that no character was ever really allowed to retain any sort of anger towards Mary for any real length of time. There is one exception, Narcisse, but even he feels neutered when it comes to her. I'm not even sure the depth of the anger Francis has for Catherine entirely makes sense. I am not disputing that that he should be angry, but on the other hand, he has never been naive about his mothers machinations. He has always known what she is capable of, what she has done, and what she has threatened to do. Maybe one could argue that her doing it to him comes as a surprise, since she has always been so protective of him. I think an interesting aspect of the story that is often overlooked is that Mary is actively advocating for Catherine's execution in season 3, and Francis refuses. But as is often the case, Mary is the heroine of the story, as she tries to convince her sickly husband to execute his mother.

I'm not afraid to admit I have a soft spot for the teen drama, especially good ones. I've been recently noticing the state of television and it's not looking too good. It seems like studious don't want to take a chance on anything original or new. Everybody says that after Francis died people started to drop the show which lead to it's cancelation, but one of the biggest problems for me was that the show was historically accurate. Imagine what could have been if the show wasn't constrained to history and was able to try different things and explore other storylines. One of the worst character the writers wrote was Sebastian. After that insane love triangle in season 1, leading to Sebastian watching his brother have sex with the woman he loved that would have caused anyone to leave court and never come back, but to be honest I thought It would have been interesting if he ended up with Queen Catherine, I mean they were both bastards and It could have been really interesting to see their relationship evolve. I rather have seen that then see him leave Kenna along all the time while he was out playing hero or knight. She was wrong for looking for other suitors and being overly ambitious during their marriage, but he basically drove her to that because he was never around! I got the impression he was always out fighting monsters because secretly he couldn't stand seeing Mary and Francis together. Other then that, Mary played herself in that last season. She lost everyone and was isolated, instead of thinking logically she wanted revenge for Lola's death which lead to one bad move after another like marrying Darnley and not getting rid of John Knox.

Idk why people hate on Mary so much I didn’t like her for some of her decisions either but I understand why she was distant from him. The decisions he made to appease Narcisse already drove a wedge between them and he tried so hard to protect his secret she grew distant from him. Then the one night where she needed him most she got raped (again bc of a decision he made) and who was there all that time he was off doing everything to clean his mess - Conde. He was there when she had a miscarriage, there to help on her adventures whenever she needed (something she bonds over with men), and there for her after the rape situation. Not saying Francis didn’t try to afterwards but there was so much damage done and she was scarred from anything that reminded her of what happened which included their own room and Francis. I was still mad at her for a while but she ended up fixing everything even though it took a while. I’m trying to explain her situation even tho it was 100% wrong but Francis wasn’t an Angel either

Francis has made mistakes and Mary is dealing with the aftereffects of a rape and craves escape from her memories. In comments elsewhere (this area really attracts mary bashers) many people blame francis, at least in part, for her affair, due to his early behavior mainly. I think they both bear some responsibility for their current problems.

I love Catherine. And while the 2nd half of S2 made it all but impossible to like and root for Mary, I did usually like her. In this scene, I find myself annoyed as hell at both of them. Mary suddenly swooping in , and acting like Catherine causing Francis such incredible pain is unforgiveable is RICH coming from her given then she was about to run off to Scotland with his cousin, and she didn't give a damn about what that was going to do Francis. I mean, Mary can step off with her righteousness here. As for Catherine, there is merit in what she is saying, but the fact that she put John in jeopardy to achieve her ends is brutally cold. Putting Francis through that is heartless, even if she thought it would all be fine in the end. And the most aggravating thing of all...Francis reasons for not killing Conde, and what his plan was were solid leadership decisions.

Mary is definitely being hypocritical here. But she's also taking steps back to francis now: first, betraying and stabbing conde, then the loving reunion. That potentially fatal stabbing, along with her return to francis almost immediately afterward, definitely puts into question her feelings for Conde. Gratitude maybe, as her ladies suggested and, further on in the affair, the guilt that she spoke of with Bash. It would be pretty hard to drive a knife into someone, at such close range and especially knowing they could easily die from their wound, if you loved them much or even recently had much love for them. And she never looked back! (He didnt even rate a flashback when she died!) Random note: Its lovely to see the transformation in the Catherine/Mary relationship. Here, they are still at one another. But, when Francis dies, Catherine is so warm with Mary as she helps mary through their shared grief!

Also in real life, Catherine de Medici didn't like Mary either, though I think this was more due to Mary's family on her mother side, The Guise, who were controlling France through Francis and who were very very pro-Catholic while Catherine wanted to enact policies of tolerance in order to prevent civil war of religion. This is why I don't really like the Catherine de Medici in this show that much because from the sounds of it real Catherine was ALL about diplomacy, that was her forte and she was a good politician too, it was her position as queen mother that left her with limited power since France was all about power residing more on men. She, unfortunately, did not have the free range to do what she wanted like Elizabeth herself had due to the succession act her father had created granting Elizabeth power as an absolute monarch whose orders were always obeyed. I do kind of like how in Reign Catherine de Medici it still shown as a very astute politician and queen but so much in this show is so accurate. Ugh why did they have to have such great actors to give this show umph to flow. Megan Follows is so great! Reign does not deserve her.

Sometimes there's just no other choice, that's the price of being in power. Mary was a fool and it cost her dearly in the end. Catherine is right, also the fact they didn't chop of Mary's head for commiting adultery with Condé was more mercy then she deserved considering her retarded decisions could've had the whole Valois family exterminated if that coup was successful. Might be Claude and Margaret had been spared to be forced into a marriage and further cement the legitimacy of the Bourbon's claim on France, but that seems unlikely as there were no valid candidates apart from Condé himself (who was married to Elizabeth?).
