Mack! As a DEV i can clearly see they either lack the knowledge to make a decent game or they are lazy. The game is full of "ready-made assets". They use uLink (Network Engine that allows you to "get networking done" without knowing anything about networking) , NGUI (A Point and Click GUI System, their game has Unity 4.6, they don't use the native UI System which is FPS optimized) , KGF Minimap (Tool make a minimap - if you dont know how to do it yourself) , FinaIK if you cannot be arsed to do proper animations or blendshaping and a lot more - The Body customization ragdoll is called UMA. The building system is ultra basic with just 3 basic blocks. The island can be autocreated in 5 minutes in world-machine, the day/night cycle is another asset (Time of Day) but not even configured, the shaders are RTP but they didnt update to the latest version that solves some FPS... the list goes on, this is just fucking thrown together to "survive the first 3 weeks of sales". As a Unity Developer i can clearly see this is a thrown together cash-grab - but it's done nicely, they added all the stuff from all other survival games and put a medival theme on it. Was hoping we'll talk before you make this video as i wanted to show it to you in a 1-hour live-development session that i can copy the game to at least 50% in 1 hour.
@Twm5329 жыл бұрын
nothing wrong with using free libraries and assets in your game but its blatant that they're amateurs with little actual programming experience so even if they're werent lazy hacks cashing in on the latest craze, they probably wouldnt even be able to fix half of the issues. Its sad how few devs actualy research how the libraries they use actualy work and just rely on dragging and dropping different assets into their game

@BeastsofpreyGame9 жыл бұрын
MegaDematrix Well, there is no denying, i was naive and unexperienced - these guys don't have that excuse. i coded the game on my own, without a Team, i quitted my old job and i put my all my private savings of the last 5 years into the development, no Kickstarter taking money from others. I won't argue with you about our launch, for 2 days i just wanted to hide in a dark room... My point was that i wanted to hint out that there are a lot "default settings"/unity assets present in the game that just take a few minutes to alter but apparently noone cared. So consider this a warning coming from someone who has only 1 year of game-development experience - you didn't see me commenting on Rust, The Forrest or Stranded Deep who have done a fascinating job on altering some of the assets they use, you see time and effort invested in those titles, here you don't.

Princess Rainbow Dash they made starforge. The game has a more interesting back story to its development than fun value. Basically it was rushed they pissed off their pr manager who went on a crusade against the game all the steam mods quit because if this. The game had nearly as many features removed as added and very few of their promises they made on kickstarter came to light and half the game was bought from a web store. They fired high profile devs after hiring more than they could sustain and left the game in a late alpha state. And starforge runs like a truck. And yet people still defended the horrible game and its devs as well as that mods were given instructions to remove negative criticism during the launch period. I myself nearly got banned from the forums.

Thanks very much for this! After StarForge, I'm not in a hurry to give CodeHatch any more of my money. I love how they released a statement saying that they "learned a lot of lessons" from StarForge right before they released this into Early Access. If they really wanted to extend an olive branch to people who paid them money for SF, they would offer a *substantial* discount on Reign of Kings. For me, personally, not even that would be enough to justify giving them more money but at least it would show that they recognize and regret how they handled the SF fiasco.

The problems with this game are really what is said in the video and the devs are very worrisome. I just hope they really deliver, because this game has lots of potential. @SpyZ869 жыл бұрын
I've been following this game lately and I think you are spot on. From the first moment I saw it something inside me clicked wrong but I kept going with it because the King system intrigued me. After finding out that the people responsible for this are the devs of Starforge..let's just say it put the final nail on the coffin. That being said, I think that it addresses a very valid point with survival games (which have been in abundance lately) and that is the "endgame". If the more accomplished games like Rust (which now is slowly sinking between mediocrity and oblivion) could take a similar concept and adapt it to their cause, it could give a breath of life to their otherwise tried and true gameplay.
@Mokkatomic9 жыл бұрын
Apparently SF ended up being abandoned due to the voxel stuff overwhelming the devs, according to a statement. This game has prebaked terrain so it can do better. This doesn't change the fact that the devs are banning people left and right on the forums. I'd say "steer the fuck clear until it's done", but a million people are just begging for a chance to throw their money at unfinished survival games so what's the point

I agree with what you said about bad developers. They need to have people stop supporting them and go away. They are actually making gaming worse. There are some games that I enjoy that are on Early Access and have been for a while, but now the progress seems to have slowed to a crawl, then they started a new game and its updates are ok. "AAA" games need to go back to the drawing board and invent stuff instead of just doing the same thing over and over, COD, Battlefield, AC, Halo, etc...

Kevin Wilson Very true. I think this is slowly starting to become a serious problem. Consumers are idiots, let's face it. And in the Early Access section it pays off to boast about features that will never become reality. It's all about pretending this is the next best thing. Being humble or realistic will demolish an EA game. So now the games with poor devs but great marketing will get a lot of sales, people have unrealistic expectations and even if the devs were honest about their intentions they will never be able to live up to those expectations. People get pissed off, the dev runs with the money, and somewhere else another dickhead has managed to get his project on Steam. The circle of life of Early Access games. Meanwhile consumers will have spent the equivalent of a triple A title on nothing but a few games that are barely playable let alone enjoyable. But you know, KZbinrs, who are making some of these games so popular, don't give a shit. Their playthroughs generally last maybe 5-10 hours, which is when EA-games start to run out of content. After that they move on to the next EA-game and HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEY ITS PEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEWDIEPIE.
@kevinwilson4559 жыл бұрын
Googol Plus Sukcz couldn't agree more. I'm all for talented indie developers making games and learning that route but there is no risks getting taken now with early access. all the best dev's in history started out making games with their friends or something but back in the day they made the games while working and studying and done it as a passion, once they had a great game or idea then they were backed in the right way by a publisher and their games printed and sold, they then grew their reputation and strived to make the best gaming experiences while expanding their teams. naughty dog started out as 2 people and made a few games before becoming the ps's best developer....only hiring the best people and left alone to follow their vision even after being acquired by sony, paradox are the only other developer/publisher that I trust, they back the good 3rd party dev's and support their games in the right way........only 2 developers I trust and yeah, what's the point of having a library full of 3-4/10 games which is what the majority of these games are rated by me lol

Mac, have you by any chance looked at Homeworld: Remastered? I don't know if you were a Homeworld fan back in the day, but this remastering puts the rest of those "Age of Empires: HD" jokes and the like to shame. They did, in my opinion, a beautiful remastering job, actually bringing a game up to 2015 standards, proving the classic can stand the test of time, and just for that I think it's worth a look. The Package contains Homeworld 1 and 2 remastered, Homeworld 1 and 2 classic and the "Homeworld Remastered multiplayer beta" - the multiplayer is beta for two reasons; they actually combined the Homeworld 1 and 2 races together in multiplayer (which balancing is quite difficult, and not perfect yet), and they had to re-write 15 year old networking code that used gamespy to use Steam, so they're still tweaking connection reliability. If you do get it, compare HW1 classic to HW1 remastered, its astonishing.

I 100% agree, one of the most fun games I've played in years, but sooooo many bugs and balance issues. In this video I think he forgot to mention that anything you build can be taken down by anyone else. All they need is a crest to replace yours and a siege weapon to get in. I can usually get into any base in under 5 mins and take the whole thing down. Sad... So much potential.

I've got a great idea of a game to make. I'm going to make a game where your job is to survive. You start off completely naked and you have to go and pick plants, harvest wood, and get food and drink to survive. You can take that wood and build a campfire or you can build yourself a house. Of course, in this savage world, there are lots of things that want you dead such as bears and other savages. I want to make this because I think we need some originality in games and we need to stop copying off of one another, because this type of game has never been done a million times, right?

Really hoping this game turns out well, but I think Mac hit the nail on the head. I bought this game before I saw this video and everything he says is 100% accurate. The combat is really awkward and the performance is just garbage. Another honest review by Mac.

Someone should explain to the developers that making a great game will make them more money than their bugged out cash-grabs can give them.

With the boondoggle that is starforge looming large I won't be giving a rat turd to these devs until its fully released and I see it getting a warm reception.
