This has been one of the longest passion projects I’ve worked on, and I’ve LOVED every second. It's been my absolute honour to work with some of the most talented musicians and artists on this, and everyone involved has put their heart and souls into this project over the last few months. I could not be more PROUD of how it all turned out. Hehe. Yay. 🥳
⚔️ MUSIC ⚔️
I’ve always yearned for a Phantom of The Opera style orchestration of this song. In late 2023, I pitched the idea to my favourite instrumentalist and multi-talented friend, Kāru. The moment he started working on the orchestration, I knew it was going to be magic. PS. can you hear those church bells ringing in the background? because church... it’s in the name. Finger-guns. Wink.
On the vocal end of things, I had written into the very bones (haha) of the vocal arrangement to have a HUGE worship-style gospel choir alongside the leads. I experimented with three different live-choirs before finally landing on Itunu whose sound I truly, truly loved. I had the best time ever recording the leads for this song, and even though I always love the process of recording and arranging vocals, this holds a very special place in my heart. Hozier is truly an artist like no other, and he’s my absolute favourite lyricist of all time so it was just a pleasure and a half to work on this.

The Locked Tomb series by Tamsyn Muir!! If you find the concept of sassy necromancer lesbians fighting in fantasy space (+ so, so much more) to be an interesting premise, I promise you won’t regret picking this series up (not sponsored, this entire project was made by fans for fans! I truly am just a nerd at heart)
I finished Gideon The Ninth late 2023 and was immediately obsessed. An idea then fell out the sky and stabbed me through the chest. What if I got a GTN animatic to accompany my cover? The more I thought about the similarities between the story and the song, the more it made sense. So, I crossed my heart and reached out to ‪@cadencelewisart‬ to request a commission! She’s a huge fan of the books as well and I think that love and care really shines through the final scenes. I could not be more pleased with the animatic and I hope you all enjoy it too!

So strongly, in fact, that I have not reread it once, but I remember most everything that happened. And I know there are books after it, but it's been... A genuine struggle after her death. I'm here crying again over a fictional character and I've known her history for 4 years, but of course this musical angel in the form of a woman comes and makes me cry again with a 5-minute animatic. i will say this..... i watched this over and over so many times before buying the ebook to read on the go, ive had this book since it came out....but never read it.... when i read it over the past week..... i imagined all the characters looking like this they to in this animatic.... i love that both Harrow and Gideon in this animatic have skin that is not ghost white....i can hardly wait till i get my hands on the second book in the series!!!! The plot is contrived and very convoluted and the Fandom is mostly just shipping so there's that. I wish more people had ocs for these books.

Please do! It's really a book unlike any I had read before. It's snarky and funny and tragic, it is science fantasy but really is atypical and genre-blurring. Just be ready to not understand everything on your first read. Basically, you can reread Gideon the Ninth immediately after finishing it and discover new details (it's partially a murder mystery). You can reread it when halfway through _Harrow the Ninth_ and discover connections and theorize about what's going on. And after the end of _Harrow_ you'll find new things still. Each book has its own tone and atmosphere, and its secrets.
