I suggest you to read Bhagavad-gita As It Is (strictly 1972 version). The science of reincarnation is perfectly explained in that book. Also I suggest you read the 1972 version since the later versions have many changes in the text.

According to vedas you only get reincarnated when you die as a child not completing your lifespan like you're suppose to die at 60 but you died at 6 by some accident or murder then you will be reincarnated for sure. However, if you're matured and you have dreams or things you strongly desire but didn't complete your lifespan also not achieving your dreams you might be killed by someone or you commited suicide for some reason or you died in an accident and so on basically not a natural death and not completing your lifespan then your soul will remain on earth stuck in a loop. Now you might already know this that you can become both negative and positive energy haunting the location where you died.

I kindly request that you read Srila Prabhupada's original books, reincarnation is perfectly explained there , but in short, the soul is eternal, and at no point did it not exist or will it cease to exist. There are two types of 'worlds' The material world and the spiritual world. There is no birth and death in spiritual world but an eternal life full of bliss and knowledge. This material world is like a prison, because we did not want to serve God but wanted to enjoy seperately from Him or we wanted to become God, we're sent to this material world to try it out, but our attempts to lord it over ultimately will always end up in frustration. That is the nature of the material world. It is mentioned in the scriptures that there are 8,400,000 species of life, and we'll take birth in a species according to our mentality/ desires in this human life So if we act like a dog in this life and remember a dog at the end ohr life, we become a dog. That is also mentioned in the Bhagavad-gita. That "Whatever state of being one remembers when he quits his body, that state he will attain without fail." (Chapter 8, Text 6) And there is also evolution of consciousness. Darwins theory is wrong The actual evolution is of the consciousness, not the bodies. This human form of life is obtained after transmigration of the soul from 8.4 million species of life. It is very broad topic and I cannot explain it in one paragraph, but I suggest you to read the Bhagavad-gita As It Is by Srila Prabhupada (1972 version whicb is original version and not the current one which isckon sells as it is heavily changed with malintentions)
