Reinhold Glière, Russian in full Reyngold Moritsevich Glier, (born December 30, 1874 [January 11, 1875, New Style], Kiev, Ukraine, Russian Empire [now Kyiv, Ukraine]-died June 23, 1956, Moscow, Russia, U.S.S.R.), Soviet composer, of German and Polish descent, who was noted for his works incorporating elements of the folk music of several eastern Soviet republics.
Glière was the son of a musician and maker of wind instruments. He attended the Moscow Conservatory-where he studied violin, composition, and music theory with such notable composers as Sergey Taneyev, Anton Arensky, and Mikhail Ippolitov-Ivanov-and graduated in 1900. After teaching for a while in Moscow, he studied conducting in Berlin from 1905 to 1907, first appearing in Russia as a conductor in 1908, the same year his tone poem Sireny (“The Sirens”) was enthusiastically received. Glière taught at the Kiev Conservatory and was appointed director in 1914. He returned to Moscow in 1920, taught at the conservatory there, and became involved in studying folk music, traveling widely to collect material. The opera Shakhsenem (first performed 1934) resulted from his study of the national music of Azerbaijan, and Uzbek elements appear in the opera Gyulsara (1936).
Glière achieved a high status in the Soviet musical world after the Russian Revolution, largely because of his interest in national styles. He organized workers’ concerts and directed committees of the Moscow Union of Composers and Union of Soviet Composers.

Monsieur Gliere has been overlooked in the West for nearly a century, but his genius is finally collecting light...

Un merveilleux musicien, injustement oublié, comme Arensky, Medtner, Kalinnikov et tant d'autres... Bravo à Anthony Goldstone pur son interprétation et un grand merci à Music Gems pour la mise en ligne

What a fantastic style. Resembles Rachmaninov but sometimes even darker, and sometimes lighter like Arensky.

E-moll is the best one, thank you very much. I am Russian and know a lot about music, but these were the treasures (perles) I've never discovered before. Many thanks to the person who downloaded it. It is such a pleasure. By hte way, it is easy to hear the vocal intonation of preludes, because as for me Gliere was more the composer who wrote better for voice, so I prefer more his romances (that's just my opinion, I do not plan to persuade anyone).

Number three is one of the best but definively not "the best"( to me at least). Gliere´s style is very noticeable in several ones and in others( also very well composed) the "Chopinesque influence" is very clear. A brilliant composer totally underated...

Great music, well played by Mr Goldstone - but I would really like Philip Thomson to perform these preludes; his excellent rendition of the Blumenfeld Op 17 absolutely prove that his virtuosity and insight auger well for excellence here.

Was it the purpose? I didn't know.. He's still managing to be a wonderful Glière though. I find his style warmer and more balanced
