Mir sind Leute zutiefst suspekt, die glauben zu Wissen, was normal und angemessen ist. Wenn du nur Pakete öffnen und Gurken schneiden willst langt auch ein 80 Cent Messer aus dem Discounter. An ein Messer jenseits der hundert Euro darf man weit mehr Anforderungen stellen.

Great Test again! The D2 Steel is "brittle" but it also means for me that the cutting edge has a good durability for carving and slicing wood. And the main task at bushcrafting is the wood work. I like this Knife very much😊👍

Thanks so much Joe that you fulfilled my wish and tested the beaver. For me it was very interesting to see when exactly it breaks. I am disappointed with the inside of the knife. As you have proven several times, cutouts are weak points. This knife is not a real full tang knife. I would also have expected it to perform better on hacking. Thanks again for testing it Joe.

Behaves like D2 at around 60 hrc! Yeah poor hard steels....even super steels like S35VN with excellent toughness go down at 60 hrc. Well! If you want something to beat up we should stay with 8cr13MOV or Aus8 the soft steels take that level of abuse much easier! Thanks Joe for the amazing video! Keep your fingers safe!!!

So to sum up, if the edge holds its a hard knife and therefore brittle. If the edge dulls out quick then it'll bend and flex and be less prone to fracture. So if you want a work tool then get something flexible with low hardness and if you want a meat, veg slicers then get something nice and hard.

In general, yes, but it is more than that. We are all looking for the unicorn that performs in both scenarios. Sometimes the geometry of the blade helps a lot. However, the search for the unicorn leads to development and thus new steels appear, with better and better properties. Tests like the ones made by Joe stimulate development and help to establish correct prices because, as you can see, there is not much difference between expensive and ordinary steels. So, let's wish Joe a long life and good luck with his tests!!! 👏👏👏🍻👏🍻💪🍻

As you saw, no problem when you work with wood. A knive is also useless when the edge rolls too fast and gets dull after little bit work, that happens with soft steel. Because of this, carry a hard short knive for cutting stuff and a bigger softer blade or axe for the harder work where you not need razer sharpness. When you want a awesome mix from both worlds, get a knive out of cpm4v, k390, Magnacut,... But you will find these steels with a good heat treatment mostly only at custom maker and need to spend money compared with month of waiting.

Yes amigo...D2 can be brittle. That's the trade off...it's affordable, semi-stainless and holds an edge for a reasonable time. That's assuming it has a decent heat treatment.

Now you can see why it is better to baton with a short knife than do the chopping. It's totally ineffective at chopping some tree/limb. A mouse is more effective, let alone a beaver. The tip test didn't surprise me. D2 is like that. Cliff Stamp spoke about that. Not the best choice for large knives, because of the brittle brittle brittleness.

anything: too hard means it's brittle, too soft means it's prone to warping. the knife is no exception, personally, I usually choose a knife of moderate quality steel, and the design must be thick

Another awesome vid. D2 unfortunately does not belong in knives. No excuses, no buts. There are steels that are better in every dimension for just as cheap. Sorry to say but the designer does not understand knives. Similar argument for N690 in the other hard use outdoor knife.
