You and me both! That penny will stay there forever - or at least as long as I have this desk!

Cindy, this video is really sweet. One of my favorite things about older furniture is how narrow they were made. I guess it’s because rooms were small so furniture had to be made on a smaller to fit. I also love all the ornate architecture that was added to the added to this piece- so beautiful! The secretary desk came out so nice and I agree washing down wood is really the best way to go for cleaning up a piece of furniture. You’re right you cannot soak it but you can you can scrub it. I think this is a great addition to your studio for your watercolor painting great idea! Keep the videos coming.❤

I love it! I love antiques, oak pieces are the easiest and most cost effective but the orange tone turns me off but this is an excellent idea without really hiding the grain. What a great makeover!

I know it needed a good cleaning, but it had good bones and was gorgeous! You explained what you process beautifully! You also did a good job on the decorative piece along the top, beautifully! Turned out beautifully, Cindy as usual.

Hi Cindy...I have been refinishing furniture since the mid 1970's. I always use denatured alcohol and lacquer thinner in equal amounts. It can be messy to use, but it removes the old finish, but leaves the patina of the piece. Use steel wool to work the denatured alcohol and lacquer thinner to work the finish to "dissolve" the old finish. Use a towel or rag to remove all the old finish and let it dry. Sometimes it takes more than one application. If there are stubborn parts to remove, you can use a brass brush without harming the wood especially on oak it's especially for details like the fussy parts of your piece. I use either tung oil or poly to finish up the piece. Hope this helps! I don't use gloves, masks or any other hazmat equipment.

Im not a fan of white wash. I would have used a gel stain, but thats just my preference. You did a great job and made it your own and to me that’s what’s important. ❤

Hi Cindy…yes I’ve used Acetone on many pieces of furniture…and very careful to wear protection…gloves specific for chemicals…eye protection…breathing protection…very important. It is a very helpful ‘tool’ for the job!

I thought you liked oak antiques so I’m confused why you white washed it? It’s a beautiful secretary desk n just putting on the Hemp oil would look so nice or a lighter stain. But I’m sure you had your reasons at doing it that way. I can’t believe you paid $20.00 dollars, what a deal. It looks nice but you know me by now Cindy. I don’t paint my oak unless it beyond what I can do. I’m definitely not a professional 😆. I know you will get much enjoyment out of it. Good job. ♥️♥️😊👍👍👍🌟

Hi Shelly - I do love oak pieces from the past. And I also love change. For me, lightening the look of the wood and toning down the orange tones helped it to have the look I like. Who knows, one day I might completely strip it down and leave it 100% natural! For me that is one of the fun things about makeovers, I can always change the makeovers when the mood strikes 🥰 Thanks for you input my friend!
