To be honest I wouldn't find that rejected Take Off very ashaming. You should always reject your take off, if you don't feel good about it, no matter what the problem is, if there is place left for it.
@TheFlyingReporter8 жыл бұрын
It was the mis-handling on my part that led to the rejected take off, that I was ashamed of.
@jibeneyto917 жыл бұрын
Don't be ashamed that much. You should be proud that you did reject the take-off when it was advisable to do so. Jon you are too hard on yourself (in this and other videos). I think you're very safety conscious and exercise sound judgement. You always analyse and learn from your mistakes with a humble attitude, that makes you a good pilot!

Hi Jon, Just wanted to say how much I've appreciated stumbling across your KZbin channel. I fly commercially at the moment, and regrettably let my SEP lapse a few years back. I have a check flight booked locally at the end of this week with the intention of renewing it in order to rent again. Your videos are invaluable as they really help to get back into both a VFR and light aircraft mindset, especially around the UK. As an aside, your commentary is fantastic! I wasn't at all surprised to discover you are a TV reporter as you have a calm and well paced way of spelling things out. All the very best and happy landings.

Another great vid. Lovely to see the cliffs at Beachy Head, it's one of my favourite places to fly. Have you ever noticed a housing estate near Eastbourne that is perfectly circular? One house in the middle, and two rows of houses around it. Makes for a noticeable landmark directly West of the Marina. Nice landing in tricky conditions btw.

Really enjoy your videos! I am an ifr ppl in Canada and I really enjoy learning how different UK airspace rules are (especially the IFR rules). I will be there in July flying with an ATPL in a Chipmunk. Perhaps we’ll hear you in the air! I am not an instructor but I was wondering about your first aborted takeoff. At first you had the correct right aileron input for the xwind. When you transitioned to rotate (3:06), you quickly levelled the controls and pulled back then resumed right airleron. Do you think a gradual reduction of right aileron during the roll as rudder authority improved but still do the rotation with some right aileron would have helped?
@TheFlyingReporter6 жыл бұрын
I don’t think that was the issue. It was a mixture of a strong crosswind, not enough speed, and maybe not enough trim for take off.

I think for as long as it remains airworthy. So, for as long as there are parts to repair it, etc.

The pre take-off briefing might be common sense or it might not. It's just a way to remind you "where" you are and "how" the take-off is actually going to be. If you always depart from the same runway with the same conditions you might think it's redundant. But say once you have to take-off from a short runway, one you're not used to. The briefing will "remind" you of that fact so you are mentally prepared for the runway end coming to you earlier than usual. I also recite the take-off weight of the aircraft and the density altitude, so I know how long the roll will be. Other things to mention: flaps? mixture leaned or not? obstacles in the area? rotation and climb out speeds? departure procedure? All in all, it's a good habit. Pilots should always brief before take-off, even if they fly alone.

These Lycoming and continental engines all have a specific horsepower of close to 0.5 at rated power, essentially limited by detonation. This means an O-320 will have rated power of about 160hp or so. The engine has to be certified with a mandated margin to detonation and the big bore engines with their simple hemispheric combustion chambers reach the limit at typical redline rpm on 100 octane fuels when they are producing about 0.5hp/cubic inch.

Taking off is always optional. If you do take off, landing is always mandatory. Same way you bin an approach if it’s not working out. Good decision. My worst moment was having to go around when a gust knackered my flare just before touchdown. I was well on the back of the drag curve and the Arrow was veeeeeeery reluctant to go flying again. Stall warner just would not shut up for what felt like an eternity, in spite of my best endeavours to tread the line between a hard landing and a shaking yoke. The wife stayed eerily quiet until late downwind.......

Mate I think it's all part the tapestry of flying, not knowing what you will encounter an how we as pilots' deal with the situation adds to the challenge and joy of flying. Should you grace us with a visit in Sydney let me know as I fly from Camden NSW ... Citabrias ..... trusty Warrior 11 [6 pack] and Cessna 182T, we have a great little flight named Sydney Harbour Scenic 1 which I'm sure you would enjoy! Cheers wtrofoz

Thanks for the video mate. Pilot to pilot mate, listen to your self talk and what your passenger is hearing, remembering this is a bloke that has just experienced an aborted take off and you are now telling him on late final ............... 'this is your hell'. You're the PIC you are a certified competent pilot , focus and land the plane as you have been taught!!! Just a thought? Cheers wtrofoz ps: 2000 hours on tacho time which is 2300 hobbs time and in oz we run engines +15-20% 'on condition' all with 100 hourlys.
@TheFlyingReporter8 жыл бұрын
+wtr ofOz you make a fair point. Nic's pretty hardy. I don't know the ins and outs of our maintenance regime, but I'm pretty sure we have the same systems here to run engines on condition too.
@mrkhan29837 жыл бұрын
why you giving aileron during takeoff run ?
@TheFlyingReporter7 жыл бұрын
+hassaan zahid strong crosswind.
@mrkhan29837 жыл бұрын
you mean into the wind aileron right ?
@TheFlyingReporter7 жыл бұрын
+hassaan zahid when taxiing and on take off roll, its good practise to adjust your control surfaces according to the wind direction. On this take off, the strong crosswind to the right was making it difficult to maintain a straight line on the runway until there was enough airflow over the rudder.
@mrkhan29837 жыл бұрын
thanx for explaining .. its certainly a nice idea to do this in gusty conditions as i can see you doing this in the video
@ap58242 жыл бұрын
The wind would of blew the downwash cross the strip before you got there .

That wasn't shameful at all. Shameful would have been failure to accept the issue, and to press on with a very long take-off, barely clearing obstacles.

Another great video. Not always fun flying in such windy condition but it's always good to cope as the British weather has a knack of catching you out. With the aborted take off, it was interesting to see your decision making...at what point do you stop telling yourself it's going to work out and do something about it....as they say "There are old pilots, and there are bold pilots, but there are no old, bold pilots.”

Very down to earth (no pun intended) videos but in order to keep your budding pilot students on course please adhere to the runway /taxiway markings you are very relaxed with your positioning.
@TheFlyingReporter7 жыл бұрын
Yes, the taxi to fuel in this video was off the mark at one point. I don't know why that was...the video is heavily edited. The runway tracking on take off was because I'd lost directional control, with the strong crosswind, and that's why I rejected take off. I like to think that my more recent videos show sharper flying.
