When Yui said she thought Shu was differant, she was right. It's just that he didn't want to open up to her in fear of losing someone he loved again. But, all of the brothers had deep emotional baggage that made them the way they are, except Kanato and Raito didnt suffer as much as the others did.

@@sakamakislut Warning: slight spoilers? Both Kanato and Laito have suffered through an extreme amount of abuse during their childhood, they all have. This person is wrong in saying that they didn't suffer as much because they did. As a child, Kanato suffered from extreme neglect from Karlheinz and Cordelia and the only attention he would get was when Cordelia asked him to sing for her. There were instances where he claimed he had to sing "until his vocal chords bled" which shows an uncanny amount of abuse. Due to his neglect, when Cordelia started "throwing away" men that she had slept with, Kanato made dolls out of them which she was impressed with. Because of the neglect he had suffered beforehand, he realised this was the only way to get his mother's attention so he continued making them. In addition, Richter would suck Cordelia's blood in front of him and even have sex in front of him causing him to have a very twisted idea of love, much like Laito. It has also been theorised that Kanato could suffer from Aspergers Syndrome (a milder form of autism). His psychotic behaviour stemmed from this abuse as he has never ever been loved and doesn't know how to receive love or give it. For example, the scene in the doll room with Yui he attempts to kill her; this is because he knows that if she's dead, then she can't refuse him because she would be silent. He wouldn't have to hear her screams of telling him 'no' as he is scared of being rejected. Essentially, Kanato is a sociopath due to his childhood which is why he doesn't hesitate attempting to kill Yui. For Laito, he is a very complex character. On the surface he seems as though he is just an obnoxious pervert with no dignity however deep inside there is a man who is suffering a tremendous amount. Laito, like Kanato, was neglected by his mother and father until he began receiving attention as Cordelia started a sexual relationship with him. This caused Laito to have a twisted view on love but also not believe love is possible - he only believes in lust. Throughout his sexual relationship with his mother, Cordelia slept with other men as well using him as a toy which has caused him to develop trust issues and refusing to seriously be in love with someone aside from engaging in sexual activities with them. Laito doesn't know how to give or receive love in the correct form as he believes having sex is loving someone. Both of these characters have suffered a tremendous amount and just as much as the others (if not more) as they have dealt with every form of abuse there is. The Sakamaki family is a never ending spiral of mental health issues. Shu may seem lethargic but its because he's become extremely depressed and he also suffers from PTSD from witnessing Edgar "die" in a fire. Reiji has an inferiority complex due to the neglect he has suffered with as a child as well as other problems (he is a complex character). Ayato has a superiority complex caused by his mothers expectations and could be classed as a sociopath due to his merciless behaviour. His lack of concentration in class could be due to depression as well as having a learning disability like dyslexia. Kanato has depression, severe anxiety, possible autism and can easily be classed as a sociopath. Laito has depression and trust issues and most likely other things (again he is a very complex character). Subaru has an extreme inferiority complex, depression, anxiety, anger issues and severe trust issues. They're all a mess bless them. Btw the mental health issues stated are theorised through their behavioural patterns by myself and others. The anime itself can't do enough justice for them as it barely shows their childhoods. I haven't played the game as I can't read Japanese but have found info online and read the manga (recommend that u do for more background). The Kanato explanation was formed through both my own thoughts as well as BlueStarsFire on amino. Sorry this is so long but I hope that clears some things up for ya :3
