Thanks! I have installed a few locks and started rekeying for the family. This was helpful to know about the change.

Much appreciated! Came into work this morning at my local hardware store and got left with seven of them, along with eight regulars. I’d never seen them before and of course, none of them matched. Thank you so much for the video!!!

I was able to use an old style Everest 6 pin with a 5 pin collar and screw on tail piece to work on that style lock. The cylinder sticks out a bit, but now I can use a C123 key.

Thanks, just installed 2 of these and wasnt sure what I was going to find when I took the cover off to get to the cylinder to repin it so one key operates both locks. Im confident I will be fine when I tackle this tomorrow.

Hey Jason, I might be dealing with some of these locks soon so I did some research. It seems like the old style KIK/KIL standard cylinders are product number 23-034 and the new ones (which a Schlage rep called “trap door style cylinders”) are 29-274. I spent hours trying to find the part number for the new one online last night and finally gave up and just called Schlage today and they gave it to me right away.

Replaced an older style one with a newer one. Was able to use the old cylinder assy, back cover/cam, and key from the old one in the new one.

It'd be great if I could find instructions for the Fe595 levers that don't have to the door in back.

Just put 2 of these on a couple employee entrances at one of our office buildings, hadn't bothered to rekey the cylinders to the master yet (lack of time, and there are other entrances I can key into). Definitely different than the last ones I did over a year ago, appreciate the walk-thru 👍👍

Since it's been 3 years since this video I figured I'd ask if there's anything that's come out since then that would allow for a Kwikset keyway with one of these stubby cylinders?

I had to figure that one out on site with the customer over my shoulder. Turns out, they're pretty popular in my area.

They only did this to save a penny somewhere in production as well as stop you from changing over to other keyways.

I just did a couple of these about a month ago. I definitely went with the shim in the re-key. For some reason I had more issues installing the dang things than I did with the re-key. Also ran into an older model Schlage keypad that didn’t have the plastic access port for the cylinder. I had to remove the entire back plate to get in there and everything exploded😬 Luckily my customer didn’t like the keypad to begin with and went with a Lever lock instead.

you cannot buy any parts for these locks, you may be able to special order a whole cylinder but good luck finding anyone with one

I don't like magnetized screwdrivers, however they are needed. knowing how much you like Klein screwdrivers, as I do. Klein makes a magnetize demagnetize little tool that comes in very handy ! I am sure your aware of this already. Good video thanks.

I just did 2 re-keys, and I think the cylinder’s tolerances were off. Pins # 1 were too tall and I had to file them down. But not on the keypad DB or any other Schlage cylinders. I thought it was my key cutter, but the key is perfect in every other cylinder. Hmm

So looking forward to "retiring" from my current job (at 30+) so I can do some of this stuff afterwards. Too bad the local 'smith I offered to volunteer hours for isn't interested in taking on an oldish intern...lol.
