That’s crazy - I arrived individually to the conclusion that +5 works just as well as +7 since it’s a circular system with a range of 12 pitches. I’m glad you mentioned it! It’s been so helpful in allowing for more options while maintaining harmonic compatibility.

Just a little helpful tip to add on to what you said, make Smart Crates that show the key (+ - 2, 5, 7 keys) & Bpm (+ - 10 Bpm). But always try your ears, bc there are always exceptions to every rule.

First off - I've watched a few of your videos and they are super helpful as Rekordbox is totally new to me! As someone who's coming back to DJing from more than a decade away from it (Mixed in Key just came out at the end of when I left a decade ago), there's no substitute for training your ear (but Mixed in Key is def a hell of a substitute!). I'm doing much more producing and learning to play piano as well as in depth music theory training and what's going on at the end of the day whether it's +2, +5, +7 mixing is whether or not there are dissonant (clashing) notes being played between the tracks you are mixing together. That is, are there notes a half step away from each other causing a dissonant sound to the ear. Here's why a mix that "shouldn't work" actually does sound pleasing... If you're mixing +5 let's say, and you're mixing out of one track and the only harmonic element is a 3 note bassline with the notes C, F, and G and the track you're mixing into has those three notes in the scale, then the mix will sound perfectly harmonically in tune. If the bassline then adds a 4th note of G# which isn't in the next track's scale, that's where dissonance is suddenly introduced. Obviously it's ridiculous to think you can figure this out for every track you're going to play as a DJ which is why, at the end of the day you want to just train your ear so you can pick up on when stuff is fitting together well.

Another movement on the wheel which works really well is going B->A whilst adding one - e.g. 3B->4A or 7B->8A or doing it the other way round from A->B whilst subtracting one - e.g. 6A->5B or 11A->10B as again, notes in those diagonal major / minor scales work well together. You can't however do the diagonal the other way round though, the outer Major 'B' track always has to be 1 less than the inner Minor 'A' track.

Thanks for sharing this one, I've studied the MIK website a lot years ago and knew of +2, 5 7 I'm not as sure these steps works as well in reverse though? Also when going from Major to minor you can deduct 3 then go to the inner wheel. So 6B to 3A or 2B to 11A.

I am comparing the camelot wheel to a color wheel. +/- 1 would be the harmonic colors. The colors at the exact opposite of the wheel are the complimentary colors and suit nicely as well. In the carmelot wheel the "complimentary color/in this case key" would be +/- 6. So I am wondering why it's not +/- 6 (instead of 7 or 5)?! Would be curious what you think about it. PS: I absolutely love and enjoy your course :)

Amazing golden tips. I'll know what to do tomorrow. I am listening music for 6 hours per day straight while I am working. Some days I am not vibing with any tracks and some days I am, adding loads of them to my playlist. It is quite a handful to keep a nice overview and get used to all of the tracks. What is a nice maximum number per folder? I am, having folders (categorized by "what should I play in different scenario's" , meaning sunset vibes, pool party, light funky house, late night tunes to darker techno) with 100+ tracks and I am afraid that some tracks will be forgotten this way. Love to hear some suggestions!

i also think +3 (or-3) and going to from A to B (or B to A) also works nicely in techno for instance because you keep the root and only switch from lets say Gminor to Gmajor, which also brings a cool mood change.

I use the +2 or +7 sometimes, or its -7 or -2 counterpart. It can be pulled off if the track you're fading into has a minimal instrumentation (drums / percussion and maybe a simple bassline). I always refer to this technique as "jump" Example: I"m playing a track in 12A and I have a track in 7A that I like and the 7A track has a minimal intro (drum loop, maybe a bassline that comes in by bar 4 or 8). If not, the two track may clash. I refer to that as a "jump 7". The Camelot wheel is nice but for me, it's not the be all, end all. There are times where I go by vibe / feel and that can at times take precedence over the Camelot wheel.

There are lots of tracks out there that mix well that aren’t in key. I’m not taking dropping on the one. If it mixes well slow transitions are good, if it clashes fast transitions, if it’s a hot track request tease it a bit and let it launch. Key isn’t as important as people think. It’s good to mix in key but being creative is the ultimate goal in spinning tracks. You can mix a 2A to 6A of two different genres. Track selection and specific order of play is key. I use Mixed in Key but only use it for mor accurate key identification. The Cues it sets may be ok to use for being but usually we want to change them from event to event. I will say the Energy Levels are questionable. When you hear a track and it gives you an inspirational feeling it’s a good track. Computers will never replace people or the craft of spinning tracks. As always 👍🤟 to you Andrew.

Hi Andrew. How is rekordbox nowadays?? I decided to stop using it after two years when version 6 dropped. Didn't agree with the subscription change especially when I lost some of the effects that I had purchased. I do miss the ability to grid songs out perfectly though as rekordbox does this really well imo especially compared to vdj (which I can't understand how they haven't perfected this after twenty plus years of experience building the software) VDJ and stems have allowed my creativity to really enter a new level and I love the massive amount of options they provide to really dial in everything they way you want. Mixed in key is a mixed bag for me. I need to update to version 10 when I get a chance. Hopefully they have improved it... Shout out from the Midwest 🇺🇸. ✌️

Genuinely curious (not trolling) - why is there all this controversy over Sync, and not about this program? To me, they both take out the need for DJs to learn the musical skills of... being a DJ (?). And it takes out all the fun tbh. Being able to hear all of this by ear, knowing your tracks intimately, hearing what naturally follows musically as the next track, is just as important as being able to stay in time and beat match by ear, if your aim is to be a professional. I'm surprised because Andrew quite rightly says in the course that every DJ should learn beat matching by ear (ie, zero grid, zero BPM display), and I agree. You'd want all the skills to be able to play a set with no screen displays, ultimately. Isn't this software basically the melodic version of hitting a sync button?

4:29 Let's talk like normal musicians and you are in Dm, then of course Am and Gm are next to it and F is the equivalent major. The latter is just something every musician should know. Dm and F uses all the same notes. As does G Dorian. But well, 99 % of dance tunes are in major or minor. And A# Lydian would 7C by the way: so happy. Let's be honest. if you're likely to face another mode, it will be Mixolydian, so in the case of F that will be C mixolydian. Call it 7Z if you like: it has to go on the other side of D minor.

I don't understand why you couldn't minus 7 if you can plus 7? If steps are the same then why would it matter which way you're going? Also, it pays to realize Rekordbox' analysis of keys is markedly worse than Mixed In Key. Even though it can now display the keys in the same way MIK does, its accuracy leaves to be desired and if you want to be sure, buy the software. Unless this has recently changed, but as far as I'm aware they have been arguing for years figuring out a royalty deal so I don't expect MIK to be fully integrated into RB like it is in Serato
