just put slabs on top of the hoppers, but continue to use the 'small slice' of lava. Then they'll fall through quickly but won't lose their drops in the lava

False when you put the type of slice of lava ontop of a hopper it tricks the game into making the item not burn

Fun Fact: You Might Need To Test It All Out ON Creative, But If It Works In There, then seal up any dark spots around a 200 block radius, if not, you have to leave the farm going.

Tip: Use campfires to kill the mobs when the mobs have been shot out of the mobfarm. And items can in-fact go through hoppers under campfires.

i thought about putting slabs on the hoppers at the first version (the thin slice of lava) that way the mobs can still get damaged by lava and items get sucked by the hoppers

A good way to kill some monsters would to maybe put slabs over the hoppers so that they can still burn but there is a smaller chance there items will also get burn. Magma blocks with a hopper minecart system running underneath could also do the same thing just slower.

You might want to speed up the time it takes between the mobs spawning and their death (ice?), it's the second most important factor for a fast efficient mob farm other than lighting the entire area up and some y-level subchunk shenanigans
