Brutal death metal overlords DYING FETUS have unveiled a mini-doc about the band’s songwriting and recording processes. Filmed at MilkBoy Studios in Philadelphia, PA in 2017 upon the release of Wrong One To Fuck With, the band chronicled the re-recording of their classic track “One Shot, One Kill” with Swedish Producer/Engineer Mattias Nilsson. The video features interviews, a new “One Shot, One Kill” performance, and behind-the-scenes footage.

Dying Fetus is definitely still one of the reigning kings of death metal. Each of them are soo fucking masterful of their instruments and they’re writing is something you never get tired of. They stick with what they know and it’s always sounds fresh.

I WAS AT THAT SHOW IN ATLANTA!!!!!!!! I’m an OLD metalhead, and these guys have always been a cut above in skill and brains. This is so cool. I’ve sold my soul and went corporate, became a senior exec, and STILL BLAST THIS SONG IN MY OFFICE. Fun part is seeing people that want to tell me to turn it down, but won’t. Looks like these guys have a LONG time left in them. Seeing this, I especially cannot wait for them to come back to Atlanta. Imagine the material that they’re going to have after this bullshit mass hysteria is over.

Muita gente falando que ficou ruim, eu achei que ficou excelente! Me lembrou a sonoridade do Forged in Fury, do Krisiun. #oneshot#onekill

About time we get some raw sounds and mixes back into metal. The overproduced modern metal sound isn't that fitting, considering the angry nature of the music and since 90% of the albums today sound very similar. That said, this one here doesn't sound very raw to me at all. Looks like multiple takes as well, instead of full session recordings. That would make it really raw.

Here’s the thing about recording today. 10-15 years ago the recording peaked out in capabilities. Both with film and audio. The problem is that the industry of recording equipment and film began to have a problem where they had gone past what the human eye and ear needed to recreate the sound or vision. Meaning that as cameras got more detailed and crisp. It was beyond what the human eye would naturally see in the world. The same thing goes for audio recording. The details they were getting were beyond what a human ear would naturally pick up at a live performance. The result is a very thin overly detailed sound. Movies with frame rates and details that make the view uncomfortable. Yes it might look good but it doesn’t mean it feels natural watching it. Yes it’s a superior recording. That doesn’t mean I enjoy the way it sounds. The other issue has actually been music technology. See 20-30 years ago amplifiers didn’t have anywhere near the amount of distortion that they have now. Which was good because the microphone and recording naturally added distortion which for death metal made it sound even better. However the new breed of amplifier while sounding amazing when playing them sound awful when they’re recorded especially with new microphones which capture the wrong details from the audio signal. The same goes for drums. Drums in real life sound very wide and funny sounding. When recorded they tighten up that sound and become more compressed. Well when companies like DW and Pearl started making thicker drums that naturally had that tight compressed sound. The result was an overly compressed and tight sound. This was a big reason why analog reel to reel recording sounds better despite it being a technology from the 1940s. Or vinyl sounding far better than digital recordings.

I really do appreciate Trey's comment on going for political neutrality. There are bands I love but find really hard to enjoy due to their shoving their politics into everything. Obviously some bands are specifically about the political message, but it can really suck enjoyment out (especially when so many are just insulting you). Secondary point, the re-recording sounds fantastic. Older death metal can get really gritty in a negative way; the polish improves it so much with them.

I personally think the mix is awful. maybe its cause of youtube compressions ? idk, i am no expert at this either. Anyway track is jarring like hell throughout.

@@411paths i don't know. With this kind of musicians, you can make mix sounds like million dollars with ease.

I prefer the Reign Supreme production. That is my favourite. The new stuff was ok. Not any memorable songs for me though. Reign Supreme had way more memorable moments for me. Not dissing WOTFW just not the greatest imo

vocals are pretty piercing seem to be distorting, snare sounds not great. mix is missing that warm crushing hug. band slam though as always
