Distribution of power is an essential feature of federalism.
Legislative Relation
1. With relation to territory.
2. With relation to subject matter
With respect to territory
Under article 245 (1) Parliament may make laws for whole or any part of territory of India and the Legislature of a State may make laws for the whole or any part of the State.
Theory of territorial nexus
The legislature of state may make laws for the whole or any part of the state. It means state law will be void in case of extra-territorial operation. However there is an exception to this general rule. A state law of extra-territorial operation is valid in case of nexus between the object and the state.

Sir, please correct , article 256 is not dealing with failure of constitutional machinery ,it is given in Art- 356
