In this episode of the Salesforce Developer Masterclass, we delve into one of the fundamental aspects of database architecture within Salesforce: "Relationships - Master Detail vs Lookup." Understanding these relationships is crucial for any Salesforce developer aiming to build sophisticated and functionally rich applications.
First, we'll explore the Master-Detail relationship, which represents a strong dependency between two objects where the detail (child) record's lifecycle (such as its existence and ownership) is tightly linked to the master (parent) record. We'll discuss how this relationship impacts record deletion, security settings, and roll-up summary fields, providing practical examples to illustrate these concepts.
Next, we turn our focus to the Lookup relationship, which is more flexible and allows for a more relaxed connection between objects. This relationship type does not tie the child record's lifecycle to the parent record, offering a looser coupling that can be beneficial in scenarios where independence between records is required. We'll compare and contrast this with the Master-Detail relationship to help you decide which to use based on specific business requirements.
Throughout the video, we'll demonstrate how to configure both types of relationships in Salesforce, discuss best practices, and highlight common use cases where each relationship type is most effective. By understanding these key differences and applications, you'll be equipped to design more efficient data models and enhance the functionality of your Salesforce applications.
Join us as we break down these crucial concepts, providing you with the knowledge and tools to master relationships in Salesforce and elevate your development skills.

Hi, As you mentioned that In master detail relationship standard object cannot be child but can be parent but how Invoice (parent) and "Invoice Line Items" (child) since both are standard object in salesforce

Good question, the statement is for a custom setting, meaning wherever a custom object is a parent, standard object cannot be master in that relationship. No such rule for standard - standard setting. It is for custom - standard only.

Example-1: Hospital & Patient have LookUp Relationship because if Hospital object record deleted, Patient object record we can associate with another Parent object record. Example-2: Company & Employee have LookUp Relationship because if Company object record deleted, Employee object record we can associate with another Parent object record. Example-4: Hospital & Physician have LookUp Relationship, reason same as above please correct me if i am wrong...

Hi Himanshu, i have a question on master detail relationship, can a child object have additional sharing and security settings along with the securities inherited from its parent object?
@salesforcemakessense
@salesforcemakessense 8 ай бұрын
No Anusha, parent has the sole ownership of all the security and sharing for master detail as its a hard dependency.
