@thomasd8549
@thomasd8549 Жыл бұрын
It viewing the relative clauses, the speaker or writer makes the determination what is Extra information and what is crucial to provide meaning. Context is important. In the example "This marker" already defines what you're talking about. You must look at what you are trying to say, and why you chose the statement in the first place. USA Schools no longer teach rhetoric and logic. Teachers are taught teaching methods, and only obtain one class on grammar. I know this for a fact! Better explanation: The red marker, which my company bought, is horrible. --This phrase assumes that there are red markers that your company didn't buy. The red marker which my company bought is horrible. --here, the red marker which is defined by the ones the company buys is horrible. The speaker decides whether this info is necessary or not, and in speech, you wouldn't say comma...comma, except for a minor pause.

Can we change the sentence to reduce it? Eg: Did everyone who took the class trip get sick? To Did everyone taking the class trip get sick? ??? Delete the subject pronoun and change the verb form to gerund. Is it possible? Another eg: I like the paintings that hang on the wall. To I like the paintings hanging on the wall. Is it possible ?

I usually get confused how to use Whom
@idkreallyty
@idkreallyty 2 жыл бұрын
we use "whom" only for people and when the relative pronouns is indicating the object and we can omit "whom" example: The guy whom I gave an advice how to use whom was Daniel Subject - I Verb - Gave Object - The guy therefore; we can drop "whom" The guy I gave an advice how to use whom was Daniel

I disagree a bit with this explanation about "reduced"clause. Let consider this example - Yesterday, I talked to a girl who will be performing in the dance competition 9:00 tomorrow. => In this situation, the action "talked" happened in the past, while the action "perform" will happen in the future. It is rather illogical to transform the above example into - yesterday, I talked to a girl performing in the dance competition 9:00 tomorrow. I would rather think of the "-ING"part as a present participle acting as äctive"adjective and taking the time of the main verb. - I saw a cat running around the table. ("running" takes the past tense of the verb "saw") - I saw a cat running around the table. ("running" takes the present tense of the verb "see") and so on :)
