@@AyniYo Both "that" and "which" can be used to introduce relative clauses referring to objects, but they serve different purposes in English grammar: 1. That - is used in restrictive (or defining) clauses, which provide essential information about the noun they modify. The clause introduced by "that" is necessary to understand the meaning of the sentence. - Example: "The book that I borrowed is very interesting." (This specifies which book is interesting, implying there are multiple books and we need to know which one is being referred to.) 2. Which- is used in non-restrictive (or non-defining) clauses, which provide extra information about the noun but do not define or limit it. These clauses are usually set off by commas. - Example: "The book, which I borrowed, is very interesting." (This adds extra information about the book, but the main point is that the book is interesting.) In this sentence, "The book _____ I borrowed is very interesting," the clause is essential to specify which book you are talking about, making "that" the appropriate choice.

What's difference between that and who?
@Englishquiz10
@Englishquiz10 4 ай бұрын
@@EphremMelese-mp2bc "Who" "Who" is used exclusively to refer to people (and sometimes personified animals). Examples 1. People: - The student who won the competition was very excited. - Explanation: "Who" refers to "the student" and provides additional information about him/her. - The author who wrote this book is very famous. - Explanation: "Who" refers to "the author," giving more details about him/her. 2. Personified Animals: - The cat who thinks he's the boss of the house always sits on my favorite chair. - Explanation: Here, "who" personifies the cat, treating it as if it has human qualities. "That" "That" is more versatile and can refer to people, animals, or things. It is commonly used in informal contexts to refer to people, but in formal writing, "who" is generally preferred when referring to people. Examples: 1. People (less formal): - The scientist that discovered the cure is giving a lecture. - Explanation: "That" refers to "the scientist." In more formal contexts, "who" would be preferred. - The boy that helped me is in my class. - Explanation: "That" provides more information about "the boy." "Who" could also be used here. 2. Animals: - The dog that barked all night kept everyone awake. - Explanation: "That" refers to "the dog," specifying which dog is being talked about. - The bird that sings every morning is very beautiful. - Explanation: "That" identifies which bird is being described. 3. Things - The computer that I bought last week is already having problems. - Explanation: "That" refers to "the computer," specifying which one. - The movie that we watched last night was really scary. - Explanation: "That" identifies which movie is being referred to. Summary - "Who": Use "who" when referring to people and sometimes personified animals. - "That": Use "that" when referring to animals, things, and sometimes people (especially in less formal contexts).
