Relatively Speaking: How Engines are Manufactured at Relativity

Our teams wholeheartedly embrace iteration, leveraging additive techniques for rapid engine component development. This approach accelerates our design process, leading to improved performance and unprecedented testing speed. In less than 2 years, we progressed from sizing Aeon R to completing a successful mission duty cycle, conducting over 1,000 component and subsystem tests along the way. This rapid data accumulation culminated in this month’s successful MDC.

​@@RKroese US Air Force and NASA together developed the F1 engine, it took them 10 years to fully develop it, budget was unlimited. Relativity has developed an engine in almost one year while being on a limited budget and with way fewer engineers.

Thanks for sharing Relatively! It's always cool to see how the sauce is made. I really wish I would have went into Aerospace Engineering 20+ years ago instead of Telecommunications Engineering. But back then (looking from the outside ) Aerospace was kind of stagnant where as Telecommunications was making leaps and bounds. Ah, to be young again and not be held down/back by years of life and accumulated responsibilities.

Surprised to gear helicoils mentioned as part of the production process but it makes sense. I'd love to hear more about the de-powdering. How do you make sure there's not even a speck of dust in a small enclosed fuel passage?

Parts are washed in powerful ultrasonic bath. This is very effective against powder. Channels are flushed with high pressure. Then, after drying, blown with ionized nitrogen. The downwash is inspected with particle counters. Works very well 😎
