Today's watch is a little unusual, it's the Orient Neo 70s Chronograph. Model WV0011TX. A JDM specific Solar Powered Chronograph by Orient. As the name suggests, it has a little bit of a 70s design thrown in. Mostly the color, although this model is a little tame compared to some of its siblings.
It's 42mm wide, 22mm straps, and a rather complicated dial. Yet the question remains, does it deserve to bear the Orient Name?
Note: Some of the links above are affiliate links, I am an Amazon affiliate so I would earn a small commission on qualified purchases. But most of the time Amazon is just the best source to link something just to get a look. I always encourage you to shop around and find the best price.

I have this watch in the red dial. I love it. It has a a beautifully vibrant dial with orange contrasting hands on the subdials that really give it that retro feel. I did put it on a chocolate rally strap, immediately. That really made it pop! Awesome review, by the way. Keep up the great work! 😉👍

Thanks for another great review. Agree it's a handsome quartz chrono with a retro flair. I could live with all of the nits you identified except for the misaligned lume pips. That jumped right out at me even before you mentioned it in your video. It's just poor quality control and not what I would expect from Orient.

I got this very same watch and I am very happy with this. Orient made it exactly the 70's look and quality but I did not expected too highly of this but all in all, I love the style and feeling of it. Plus, solar charge is amazing. I have Seitona panda as well. This orient solar panda is as lovely as Seitona to me.

First thing first you've done great job again. My personal feelings about the watch are 1.The 2nd hand should be in a different color, in this watch white, blue or red 2.From the price-point it is a bit higher than I expected. Should be ~$200 at max 3.The bracelet is my main disappointment. Better is the metal rally strap or leather rally. Or combination of both in different models. But I think 70s chronograph should include rally strap. By the way, you must open the case and rotate the outer scaled dial to clockwise a bit.

I paid $80 for a regular panda dial, the dress watch without any lume and a sapphire crystal. I like the neo-70s line, though. And I always have an eye out for them on ebay; just haven't been able to nab one yet. If Orient would drop their prices on their neo-70s line, and other chronos, by just $50 they would be so much more competitive. Especially the solar watches. Also, it's weird that your dots don't line up. A small thing, but a necessity in my mind. It's cool there is lume, though. I'm surprised how limiting it is for mine to not have any lume. It basically makes it a daytime only watch. Great review! And great production value, as usual.

Very well done review. I have 4 Orients (Ray II,Triton,Orient Star Seeker GMT & Classic pocket) with which I am very happy, so I am a fan. I already have 10 other chronographs, so I have most styles covered and probably will not be buying many more. This Orient is similar to one of my Citizens, with the 1/5 sec. timing second hand, but missing the tachymeter. The big benefit that I see with a 1/5 sec. timing second hand is that tachymeter readings can be directly read precisely versus higher precision (1/20, 1/100, 1/1000 sec.) chronographs where the timing second hand moves in one second increments with the fractional seconds displayed on sub-dials. With chronographs in general, I am finding that I prefer having the large second hand performing the double duty of showing the running seconds and timing seconds versus the more traditional style having running seconds on a sub-dial and only using the large seconds hand for timing. It does mean that there is an additional step to enter timing mode, but I have not found that to be a problem.

Relative Time Several months ago, after reading several revues, I was all set to buy a blue Triton. Then, they were out of stock almost everywhere and the prices went way up. So I decided to get a blue Ray II, which I like very much. This was my first dive watch. I then bought a Citizen Promaster Diver (BN0191-55L), which is nice. Several weeks ago, when the Triton came back in stock, I got the Triton. It is my favorite of the three watches. I have a 7.5 inch wrist, so the Triton fits very well. People with much smaller wrists, might prefer the Ray II. After having the power reserve meter, I would not want a mechanical watch without one. I was very used to having quartz accuracy on my modern watches and some somewhat hesitant to buy a mechanical after reading some other people’s accuracy results. I am very pleased with the accuracy of all four of my Orients. They are performing better than or at a similar level to my wife’s Rolex. The Triton provides everything I want in a dive watch. I could afford to spend way more for a dive watch. I do not see the point.

Another great vid, Shane! Quite a few issues come up with this one as well, v interesting. In principle, I don't have an issue with paying a JDM premium, assuming the overall package still makes sense. I've owned a Junghans Solar Chrono for over a year, and tbh it's not the "solar thing" which has made me keep it. It's all the other normal criteria, not least of which I love wearing it! My main concern which you highlighted tho is the misalignment which is quite poor. I really thought Orient were better than that. Hopefully, you'd be able to get it sorted out, but how did it get past QC? Sampling will probably allow some through I guess, but still....

@ajones4064
@ajones4064 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, it does have the alarm function. I like having an alarm function on some of these watches, but for the life of me, I can't understand why they do a 12 hr alarm that will go off every 12 hrs, instead of a 24 hr alarm. So, if I want to have an alarm for 2pm, it will also go off at 2am.......while I'm trying to sleep. I suppose I can arm and disarm the alarm every day, but a 24 hr alarm just makes so much more sense to me. I usually just use those 12 hr dials as a second time zone function instead of alarms.

I just got this watch 9/15/23. Its a gorgeous watch but IMO the hands are hard to see with all the silver and grey. Also the dial is very busy. The band feels very cheap and the lume is almost non existent. I only paid $117.00 USD so im going to keep it. I do think Orient couldve put lume on the bottom of the hour and minute hands. That wouldve made it much easier to see the time. Also the date window is so small you can't really even see it. For my first Orient, I'm not nearly as impressed as i thought i would be.

And yes, the bracelet is terrible. I swapped It for a different metal bracelet I bought on Amazon and now it looks perfect. Even though it is 42 mm i'd think it wears more like a 40. I just got the panda. For 100-150 it would be ok but not 250. It should not be called a panda in some lights it looks White but that is definitely brushed metal. Sub dials are blue not black. Insides of the lugs are sharp. It doesn't look like much care goes into these at all. It almost looks Stamped Out and assembled. I really don't think a person ever touches it. Even the brushing on the case is in a circular pattern. like a wheel just comes down on top of it as it goes down the line. From a distance it looks great but the closer and longer you look the cheaper it looks. Compared to the Orient Bambino I got for $150 less I expected better. I was planning on getting the Mako USA II White dial next but now I'm not sure. I think this one will be going back. I paid the same price JDM Seiko 5 sport totally blows this out of the water on finishing. Had it not been discontinued when I bought the Seiko it would have been $100 cheaper then the Orient.
@georgechau6800
@georgechau6800 5 жыл бұрын
For that price, they should include solid links and a milled clasp not to mention sapphire crystal.(maybe I'm expecting too much) It's a nice looking watch but I guess it really depends on how often you would wear a dressy chronograph. I purchased a Parnis Daytona homage, which is now my everyday watch. I dress up for work and so it looks good on whatever I wear. Owning a mecha quartz is nice. I never have to question its accuracy. I had a Starking automatic which I sent back to Starking for repairs. I was considering finding a good solar quartz but I was never sure how long the batteries on them lasted. You had mentioned maybe 10-20 years but I guess it depends on which solar quartz movement you are looking at. Also, is the battery on a solar quartz expensive to replace?
@RelativeTime
@RelativeTime 5 жыл бұрын
Might be expecting a little too much with the milled clasp and solid end links. 😎 Do you have the model for that Parnis? Well, it's like anything electronic. Sometimes you get lucky, others you don't. A citizen thinks they should last 20 years nowadays. In the past, some people would report 10. I think the battery is $30-40 for the part. Not sure how much to have someone else replace it. In my own experience, i had a Seiko Kinetic that went 8 years before it's capacitor needed to be replaced with a new battery. I remember it being around $40 and taking about 40 min to fix myself. And that's without knowing what I was doing. Meanwhile, I also have an old Pulsar Solar watch (owned by Seiko) that I think will be 21 this year. I don't think it last a full 6 months on a charge, but it still gets at least 3. Otherwise still running fine.

Don't really like chronographs but I've been looking at the 🐼 version for a while, and this one looks great. Normally I'm quite forgiving with little issue's, but those misaligned dots though. I love Orient and clearly a QC issue (ive not seen or at least noticed on other neo 70s), and perhaps is a one off. But like you I expect more from Orient. But still it's a great watch. Not sure I'd be willing to pay the amount it's selling for though

I think I just got one that's off. It looks more like the hour indicators and the chapter ring (which are lined up together) are a little off, not the dial. So it might be easily fixed if I open it up.

Like the look of the watch but the misaligned lume dots would drive me crazy. Poor design choice to have those separate from the indices.
@RelativeTime

Agreed. It looks as though the indices and the Chapter ring are lined up nicely with each other. But they may be off a few degrees from the dial itself.

White striped long counterbalance on the minute and hour hand? Terrible decision, very confusing to look at. Maybe I'm just too familiar with dive watches, but legibility is a must. Tachymeter isn't very practical sure, but it's one of those quirks I really look for in a chronograph, especially a retro-styled racing chrono. Daytona and Speedmaster know their role and are perfectly designed for it, this one... just not so much.

A bit hard to read. I think there is a contrast problem. Maybe you just get used to it after a while. Not a bad watch by any means though.
@RelativeTime
@RelativeTime 5 жыл бұрын
A little. It's more of a dress chrono, which I think always makes things harder to read. Panda version might be better. I'll probably sell this and get a Dan Henry 1963. Shouldn't be any contrast issues with that.

Orient please make this in a 45mm size, (w/out crown) since we don't all suffer from bitch-wrist-syndrome. Also the lume dots should be aligned accurately & near the outer perimeter. Thanks in advance!
@RelativeTime
@RelativeTime 5 жыл бұрын
LOL... I'm, not sure wrist size even matters. I've had guys with larger wrists tell me how nothing should be over 40mm, and I've had guys with smaller wrists tell me they prefer 45+. Most of it is just what someone thinks looks good.

I need to add a new solar watch to my collection. With regard to fit, finish, and durability how would you say this watch compares to Citizen's Eco - Drive?
@RelativeTime

I'd say its about the same as most of the $200-300 Eco-Dirvies I've seen. Yet better then the real entry level ones like the Chandler.

Their early work was a little too new wave for my taste. But when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor.
