I’ve been using baking soda on my hair for years. I have low porosity hair and it has helped TREMENDOUSLY with getting moisture in my hair strands. Mixing it with conditioner is what I’ve always done with almond oil too. I haven’t noticed any damage and my hair has felt strong and thick ever since I stopped with all the heat and chemicals. I haven’t noticed a difference in my curls relaxing more but I have noticed product taking in more to my strands compared to when I don’t use baking soda. That’s the only reason I do it! I love your videos. Great info.

Olusola Olaniyi I use 2 tablespoons of baking soda with one cup of whatever conditioner I’m feeling at the moment and about one tablespoon of sweet almond oil. I like almond oil because it is a light oil and it’s the only oil that my hair has really taken too. The oil and conditioner really helps with the mix of baking soda IMO. I’ve never really tried it without. I was always nervous the baking soda alone would be too harsh. But I don’t know 🤷🏽♀️ lol that might just be in my head. Try it and see if it works for you! This video has great info and you should be cautious, strand test first and see how your hair reacts. I only do this method once a month no more.

Yes, I agree. It worked wonders on my extremely low porosity hair. That’s the reason I’ve used it. Products would always just sit on my hair until I recently started incorporating baking soda into my hair regimen. It’s not for everyone, but for low-po ladies that are struggling with moisture, it’s something to consider.

My hair is very kinky naturally and I've used baking soda on my hair a few times, and loved the results. I mix 2 Tbsp. Baking Soda with my conditioner and after rinsing it out I do a rinse with ACV. My hair feels soft and it's so much easier to manage. I haven't had any problem with my hair after using it. I try different things to see how my hair reacts. Because everybody's different I like to see what works for me. So far I've found my hair loves baking soda, organic honey, Greek yogurt, and coconut milk. Just to name a few of the items I've experimented with so far.
@Prov31Beauty-Seeinglassfull7 жыл бұрын
wow, pls how long have you been using bs in your hair? I once read of a lady that tried only natural products for her hair for a year - bs or acv for shampoo etc, cant remember which is which - the long term damage was not funny...still we are all different from each other aint we...but yet..
@arlenegilmore39287 жыл бұрын
Marcy Lee I don't use it routinely just occasionally. No it hasn't caused any damage. I have low porosity hair, it's very kinky and gets dry. When I use baking soda it leaves my hair soft and easy to manage.
@arlenegilmore39287 жыл бұрын
Olusola Olaniyi I use it probably once a month. But I can't imagine it causing long term damage. If I try anything and my hair begins to get dry or brittle I stop using it. I clip my ends, deep condition my hair and work at getting it back to normal. It's hair....it's going to grow and as long as you take care of it, it can be healthy again. I try things to see what works for me. Some people us baking soda to wash their hair on a regular bases and have no problem. Everyone needs to find what works for them.
@jraissahouessouyt17 жыл бұрын
Arlene Gilmore you are maybe right, well you are maybe someone who speed of growth is quite fast, my hair could not afford any damage, i don't have breakage ends but the growing rate still slow, it will be tough for me if they are damaged again, but everyone with his choice, wish you good luck with bs
@asukachan077 жыл бұрын
Arlene Gilmore It's true that it could be what works for your hair, but maybe the baking soda can't damage your hair in the first place with the amount you use in a mixture with a conditioner. If the conditioner is pH-balanced, then you're probably not getting too much out of the Safe Zone. Then, you rinse out your hair with ACV, basically reversing any effect of baking soda by bringing your hair back to an acidic pH. Baking soda is a great cleaning agent though, so that's a benefit. I hope that the mixture truly agrees with you, and is not slowly damaging your gorgeous curls.

I used baking soda on my hair for a while as part of the max hydration method. At first I had mixed feelings about the result. My hair felt softer and easier to detangle and deal with in general. But it was also flat, limp and kind of lifeless. Still I continued doing MHM because I wanted to give it a good chance before I made up my mind. Big mistake. Fast forward to a few months and multiple baking soda applications later, I began to notice an insane amount of hair breakage and split ends. At first I though it was all the wash n go’s I was doing but the condition of my hair was so bad that I knew it wasn’t just that. Most of the hair was split. Finding a strand that was intact from root to tip was rare. Each strand was split in multiple areas down the length, not just at the very end. I looked up info on baking soda hair damage and immediately regretted putting that stuff on my hair. I should have done all the research before, not after. I also had a really bad experience using it on my skin as an alternative deodorant. Baking soda isn’t child’s play. It can really do a number on your hair and skin.
@gemelo330 Жыл бұрын
Sorry for your experience! Try lemon juice as a natural deodorant. Also, henna is still my fave, even with Locs. Have you tried heavy whipping cream to detangle/deep condition. East Africans traditionally use something similar. hope this helps

@@gemelo330 yeah you want to kill people's hair with lemon though.
@gemelo330 Жыл бұрын
@@asiafinefinereetoptop7730 Please do your research before commenting in the future. To clarify, the lemon juice used with henna is to release the natural dye molecules in the ground up leaves. Further, it can be replaced with green tea which is less acidic. But keep in mind that your hair and skin are also acidic, so using very alkaline products like baking soda is going to have to be rebalanced by an acidic product afterwards. So please explain how I want to kill people's hair again? Not to mention that henna actually STRENGTHENS the hair and prevents breakage. If you knew anything about henna you would have known this and never made the comment in the first place. Baking soda is a chemical and was never meant for your hair. Henna is literally the dried leaves of the lawsonia plant and has been used for literally thousands of years (see Egyptian mummies with henna dyed hair). Any other method of loosening the curls outside of henna is going to literally damage the hair to achieve that result. The loosening of curls with henna is reversible, hence it doesn't do any damage. If you put toxic chemicals like sodium hydroxide in your hair to straighten it, I guess baking soda is a walk in the park 😂FYI they are both alkaline/basic and both damage the hair permanently. Have fun though!

This was so helpful because I used baking soda with my cherry Lola treatment and I remember being amazed at how different my curl patterned look. And then after awhile, I was confused at why my hair was feeling a bit stripped and getting more split ends. And then finally, I had a weird reaction at my hairline and spread to my forehead that seemed to be fungal. I've tried a baking soda/ conditioner mix in the past before finding this video, but not as a relaxer nor with that intention. I've used it as an alternative to shampoo, when I needed a stronger Co-wash option to lift product buildup. It did not relax nor damaged my hair, as I did not leave it to sit. Here's what I did : I combined approximately 2 tablespoons of baking soda, 4 to 6 table spoons of regular moisturising vo5 or suave conditioner, and 1 tea spoon acv (there was no method to my madness). I applied the mix gently to my strands first and then gave my scalp a slight massage. I did not rough up my scalp or strands as I knew baking soda is quite abrasive. I washed it out immediately, and followed up with a deep con with protein and moisture, and an oil mixture. As I mentioned I was not planning on relaxing and it did not have that effect on me, but I'm so happy I found this video. It kinda confirms that educating yourself can prevent you from getting yourself in trouble. I think rinsing it out immediately not letting it sit, and following up with a deep con made the difference. I don't practice this technique regularly and I am not advising any to try, however, this is something that I will do again, but now a little more cautiously 😊.

Thank you! Very informative. I lightly relax my hair right now to slightly "loosen" my curls/kinks because I have a very densely packed head of hair and don't have hours and hours to care for it - my life is too busy right now. I don't want straight hair. I know it's not the best solution but my hair has never been this long and I still have elasticity. I can detangle in five minutes and my go to style is twist outs. I still have very big hair - I love it! I think in the future I will try the baking soda method because I'm sure it's less harsh than what I'm doing now. Thanks for the judgement free delivery. Thank you for this and all your amazing videos. When you said your hair is growing without a curl pattern, in a jagged way- this is exactly how my hair was before I started taking MSM with Vitamin C. MSM is a natural sulfur that many are deficient in, since it is found in raw foods. This has absolutely transformed my hair, and made it so soft and silky, naturally moisturized and smooth, and also much looser. I can't wait for it to grow out and I have a full head of this hair (I've only been using it a few months), and I can't keep my hands out of my roots! Oh yeah, and it also makes your hair grow faster. My hair is growing like weeds. MSM is also great topically in hair oils & moisturizers- it's what makes Qhemet's Burdock Root Buttercream so amazing- it also sort of loosens and smooths the hair. It (along with the Vit C) has many other amazing health benefits. Some tips: OptiMSM is best, high quality whole food vitamin C is helpful (you need Vit C to absorb the MSM). Start low and work up to a high dose. Powders work better than pills- mix with juice since it tastes terrible. I can't believe I didn't discover this years ago! That said, I would love a video on why MSM works, if that's a topic that interests you!

I tried baking soda on my hair during the time that everyone was trying the Maximum Hydration Method a few years ago. For whatever reason, I actually thought my hair was low porosity. After trying the baking soda and the other steps in the method, my hair was completely wrecked. My hair ultimately got very weak and I never got the "natural curls" that everyone else got. It was after using the baking soda that I realized I was really a medium/ high porosity person and that this whole Maximum Hydration Method was the worse thing I could do to my hair. I actually had to do another big chop after this. I don't think anyone that has medium/high porosity should ever mess with baking soda.

The reason I was comfortable with this is that I use baking soda for baking of course, but also to occasionally brush my teeth, indigestion, etc. Because of an injury to my thumb, two strand twists are not an option, my TWA is it for now, just too tight for my liking. If the end result is that I had to shave my head, then I was willing to do that, although it was unlikely that that would happen to my hair, it is thick and healthy. I do not see any difference today. Thank you for your detailed video, you also made me feel comfortable in doing this today, appreciate you

I am a long-time subscriber who absolutely loves your videos. I do want to point out a mistake in this one though. As far as I know, yeast are a form of fungus, so naming both is a bit redundant, albeit not at all a major issue. But the most concerning is that the bottom picture at 1:55 looks a lot more like scalp psoriasis than it does like a yeast infection. It would be terrible to confuse an autoimmune disease (that has nothing to do with bacterial, viral or fungal growth) with yeast. And for individuals who suffer from psoriasis, which entails lifelong systemic medications to modulate their immune system and inflammation levels, as well as potential lowered self-esteem, it could be destructive to misrepresent their illness as an example of bad hair care.

I've only used baking soda to help exfoliate my scalp, though I've heard of it being used to relax hair texture. Thanks for this explanation.

My Caucasian friends use baking soda instead of shampoo. I did a couple of times as well and it was great! My scalp was so clean. Never heard of it being bad before.

I've used baking soda on and off for a few years but I've never noticed it "relaxing" my hair 🤔. My hair just feels really soft and moisturized afterwards

I tried this already and what I noticed is that my hair was super clean and more manageable. However, I do have to say. You must rinse your hair well because if you don’t. Your hair will feel hard and crunchy. So the key is to rinse well.

Thanks for the vid! Well explained, and lays out the pros and cons nicely. I don't think I will try this on my hair. I already have too many challenges (fine, porous) to risk baking soda damage.

I'm good. Ima stick to my natural cotton looking hair. Loved the way you explained the risks along with the possible benefits. Now I know never to try baking soda on my hair. I do use it to wash my face though.

Wow I've been doing this completely ignorant of what I was doing to my hair.. No wonder it lost volume I didn't know why... Thanks for the info💜🙏

I sort of tried it through mixing baking soda and peroxide to lighten my hair to brown (then blonde a bit later). Left it on for 2 hours with heat from blow dryer, but didnt notice much curl reduction. Took a few more hours to lift to yellow blonde but it didn't cause as much damage as expected. Some dryness but no breakage compared to regular bleach powder.

OMG! Thank you for this info. I was planning on trying the baking soda rinse on my hair and my hair is super fragile. Your videos are always so informative and scientific. Thank you.

I've never heard of a "baking soda relaxer", only baking soda as a clarifying treatment so, thanks for this info. Even though I don't expect to be trying this any time soon, I appreciate gaining the knowledge.

Excellent detailed instructions. I watched out of curiosity. I've been using baking soda on My underarms for over 35 years - a natural deodorant. I can't use any of those fully chemical-ized aluminum based deodorants nor the so-called natural types. Nor can I shave, wax or, use hair-removers, My armpits are very sensitive. Anyway, Baking Soda has not straightened/loosened My underarm hair. I don't grow alot of armpit hair anyway, but the hairs are very light in color to where it is mostly unnoticeable.

Hey guys TRY AN OVERRIPE BANANA/PLANTAIN MASK. It loosens curl pattern but I'm still not sure why. It's really good for moisture and smoothing though and it lasts for about a month. It should he safer than messing with your ph like this. The loosening effect is more pronounced with 4a texture but my 4b/4c parts saw definition for the first time ever. And very sleek and smooth, moisturized and a little elongated. And it's safe

Yes I've use baking soda on my hair twice and omg my hair wasn't only soft but the moisture was in my hair and not jus on it before I use baking soda my hair use to be so hard if I put it in a puff and all the moisture would jus sit on the hair and my hair would still look dry but now I see and feel the difference

I had accidentally did a baking soda relaxer on my hair years ago. I was only trying to remove chlorine from my hair after swimming. My thick hair went to thin strings in like a month smh.

I tried this methods several times, and although the results were ok my curls were looser and my curls were popping when I did w&g's. However, I will not be trying this method again on my 4b hair, overtime it is not good for our hair strands.

idk why this is just NOW in my recommended, but for anyone who just found this video as well, I really really recommend henna over this. it loosens AND strengthens curls.Also, if it is ever too loose, as happens to me sometimes, I just use hennasooq's "cassia curls +moisture" mask to bring back spring and softness.
