One of the best fireplaces going. It's minus 42 with the wind chill in SW Alberta Canada. This makes the house feel warmer. . Well done with the traditional fire box.

I found this video at the perfect moment in time. Where I live in New Hampshire, it's 4 degrees below zero (Fahrenheit) right now, with a wind chill of 24 degrees below zero. Our big fire place (enough to grill a pig) was once open like this and it is not as cosy as one might think. The open fire sucks the air in and it feels as if a cold air stream comes running from the attic, down the hallway and is blowing right through the room into the chimney. Your back gets cold and the front roasted at the same time. But it looks nice. Now we have a custom made fire place cassette in place and the room gets well heated.

My Aunt owns a home built in the 1910s and an open stone fireplace takes up almost an entire wall. You're absolutely right that it's only warm right in front of the fire but your back is cold. I was with her when Hurricane Sandy came through (she lives in NJ) and the house was without power for 10 very cold days; we hung out and slept right in front of the fireplace pretty much the entire time because even with a massive fire going, nowhere else was warm.

Put another log on the fire to warm the room. Castles are drafty places. People who lived in them were ever for catching Chills & Colds. I came across this history fact from the DK Computer Game called Castle Explorer. 1996.
