ANCIENT SYNAGOGUE near the DEAD SEA, Israel

The ancient synagogue is located near the Dead Sea in Israel. Nestling in the heart of Ein Gedi Nature reserve, Ein Gedi’s ancient synagogue was discovered by chance in 1965. Kibbutz members were installing a water pipe for irrigating their date palm groves when the tractor hit a mosaic floor. An archaeological expedition from the Hebrew University uncovered the building, the proved to a be 1,500-year-old synagogue. Its mosaic floor was decorated with charming patters and 4 lengthy inscriptions. One of them alluded to a secret the community held whose nature is mystery to this day. A burnt scroll found on its floor was deciphered only in 2015. It proved to be a copy of Leviticus. dannythedigger...

Back in 2014 our special personal tour guide took us down to see this exact synagogue while the men of our group were climbing to see the En Gedi springs and waterfalls. At that time there was nothing else but what you see under the tent. It was interesting to learn about the community who used this Synagogue, how their main trade was perfume . I am amazed at how much more they excavated since then. Relaxing Walker, you ROCK !! Blessings for this real treat to our eyes.

Fantastic mosaic in the ancient synagogue, very beautiful indeed. I have passed the syngogue many times, but only seen it from the road. This time was the first time I saw the inside of it and the floor. Next time I will visit the Synagogue with a small group of friends.

Wow! The ruins of the ancient city are interesting. They have no windows…no roofs? We’re they two story? They are all together like apartments. Not houses? Very interesting! Of course the area is beautiful!
