I love the sound the relays make, you can hear as more and more bits are added together.

One of my favourite sounds too! If I had the bwains I'd make one.

I've been trying to understand how computers actually work and this series of videos has been extremely helpful. You're very talented and make great videos.Thanks a lot man!

Vary nice video. I love the casual yet informative nature of you style. The system you are creating is going to be an awesome site for sure.

2:10 cant you use a diode on A and B, and then connect the output of the diode?
@nilskauffmann38487 жыл бұрын
For the problen of mixing a and b. Couldn't you use a diode?
@ClicketyClack7 жыл бұрын
Yes! In fact you can build lots of logic gates with diodes. (It's called diode logic.) But this project is about relay logic, so I want to stick to relays.
@samba34037 жыл бұрын
Yes he could but i think his challenge is to do it with relays. The diodes hes using across the coils are more to prevent damagd to driving circuits not Really part of the design for blocks.

@@ClicketyClack what about 2 spdt/spst relays? Coil: A - gnd | B - gnd Output: Then wire Norm-Open to short gate between the two relays.
@After_Tech_Industries4 жыл бұрын
Or have extra pins for dpdt

I'm using 5 pin diodes. Is there any big disadvantage to this? Also they're not clear which kind of sucks but oh well they're 10 for $3.50

10:15 too bad the bg music is so loud you're actively competing with it in volume. Makes it hard to hear what you're trying to say. :(

where can i find the schematics of the relay circuits

you could also have A & B and B ^ A , giving you a repeater for A and B

How do you size the fly back diode? For instance using a reed switch to control the coil of the relay. The reed is rated 12v 0.5a and the relay coil is 12v 5a. I understand that the diode stops the magnetic field collapse from reversing the current back to the switch but how do I determine what diode to use to stop fusing my reed switches.
@ClicketyClack7 жыл бұрын
A simple way is to build a test circuit and use an oscilloscope to measure the flyback spike. But any ordinary rectifier should suffice for small relays - the ones I'm using are 1N4004s which will probably be fine for your relays.
@johnmercer97137 жыл бұрын
Clickety Clack thank you for the quick awnser at the moment I don't have a osiliscope. I'm just learning and don't have the budget for a osiliscope at the moment.
@ClicketyClack7 жыл бұрын
I'm sure the 1N4004s will be fine for your 12v relays - they are quite beefy. Best way to find out is just to hook it up and see if it works. Parts are cheap. :)

What is its maximum switching frequency, at which test is passed consistently without error?
@ClicketyClack7 жыл бұрын
I don't know yet; I've run individual boards at 100ms without errors, but with multiple boards there will be more propagation delay.
@xakepp357 жыл бұрын
please! can you please run it at 75ms? 50ms? 25ms? 12.5ms?... (till errors) and shoot a video about overclocking your world-coolest cpu! and (probably) add some cold condition, like running it in a freezer :-) I guess all the copper must be max-cooled before run, in order to top-up conductivity a bit? ;-). Post an answers here, about "Would 10-20 degree cold of ambient temp improve switching speed of coils with no error?" and "How does temperature affects this cpu power consumption?". your 30-40W room fan force-cooling of a relays inside a freezer is also a great idea for research) also show us your real wattmeter readings. i think that would be extremely cute and tech-friendly video!!!
