I was in college and working as a projectionist when this film came through in 1975. My projectionist mentor made Death Records t-shirts for us, and every night after we closed, we'd go to our nearby pub and get tanked. After we'd had enough brew, we would go back to the theater and run Phantom, just for us!

I was lucky enough to have seen PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE on the big screen when it was first released. It remains one of the coolest films ever produced. I’ve written about it (briefly) in Scary Monsters magazine, and I’ve always said that the best thing about the film is that Paul Williams wrote all of the music, and the worst thing about the film is that Paul Williams wrote all of the music. I jest, of course, I love the music! This film was released shortly after Paul Williams portrayed the wise orangutan Virgil in BATTLE FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES.

I’m from Winnipeg. ALL of my friends had the album. This movie affected me in all the ways you could possibly imagine. Born in 1967, the first time I watched the film may have been when I was 9 or 10. Something about the pace of the film kept me interested. Part comic book and most musical. Each song was impactful and reached me deep as a kid. Visually, this film was almost too much to absorb as a kid. Hence the magic. It was far better than Rocky Horror. That movie never grabbed me in the least. The scores from Phantom never needed to be bolstered. They are all thanks to you know who. Great film. It’s part of me.

I was 11 when I decided, without telling anyone, including my parents, that I was going to catch a bus from the suburbs in Winnipeg (Fort Richmond) all the way downtown, alone, and walk from the bus stop there to see the Phantom of the Paradise back in 1974. I'd never taken a bus, never mind alone. As I think back it's ludicrous. I didn't exactly know where the theatre was but i knew it was downtown, somewhere to the right (lol -I didn't even know a street name). I started off by taking the wrong bus, going in the wrong direction and I ended up at the University of Manitoba, about 10 minutes away from home, which was the end of the line and the bus driver scolded me, telling me to never do that again. Luckily, that same bus simply headed back past the original stop on the opposite side of the street as the "Downtown" version, so off I went. By some miracle I hopped off the bus where I was supposed to, walked a few blocks (to the right of course), and there was the Garrick theatre! Such bloody luck!! I knew I was a bit late, but I headed into the theatre, grabbed a seat and was mesmerized by the film. How late? It was years and years later that I finally watched the film a second time (in full) and discovered this whole other movie that I had only partially seen. At 11, I had walked in just after Phantom had his face melted off! I had no idea of the previous, I dunno, 30-45 minutes of lead up to that moment, but it made no difference to that little 11 year old -it was the best film and best music I had ever seen. I've tried Rocky Horror, and no disrespect, but it just has nothing compared to the emotion and drama and humour that The Phantom of the Paradise possesses. I bought the album immediately after watching the film and, with it's iconic cover and great music, I was entertained for a great many years and still am to this day.

Thanks to the release of consumer/prosumer editing software, you can rip and re-edit the film if you wanted to. Brian De Palma isn't against the idea of fan edits. Someone did one for his film Raising Cain, which they re-edited the film in a non-chronological presentation similar to how it was presented in the film's original script. De Palma liked it so much, it was included on a recent physical release as the director's cut. So, technically, fans could do the Swan Song cut themselves, which would be an interesting experiment.
@josephstaub69672 жыл бұрын
Someone has done a Swan Song fan edit that is available if you dig around on google enough. It's pretty good but clearly a fan edit (i.e. the color hasn't been re-graded and the Swan Song footage is pretty low quality compared to the rest of the footage) but it's cool to have nonetheless.

I was 4 years old when I saw this movie at the "Rialto" theater. I never forgot it! When I was much older I found the LP soundtrack and fell in love with the music all over again. I then ordered the DVD and watched it with my daughters. They loved it more than I! My youngest is a Super Phan and wants a tattoo of Winslow or the Death record label. She would sing songs from the movie at her school talent shows. She made "Old Souls" popular with the staff back then . POTP is a family tradition and we hope to keep it alive for as long as we can.

The Phantom as a family movie, now that's an original take ! Love it that you got the bug at 4years old! Can't imagine what it did to your brain :-) My first experience was way back in '74 or' or '75 in one of those magical open air cinema's they had on the Italian Adriatic Riviera/ Riccione/Rimini. They had these open air cinema's pratcially on every block playing a different movie EVERY night...... they were dirt cheap and i probably wathced it three times in a row........ And then EVER since. it's funny how the movie was nearly invisible in it's first run.......only existing as a record.....which could be found in most hip record stores, though i think they hardly sold, i probably saw the same 3/4 copies lying there for over a year.. Before video/ vhs....... Yeah, then midnight showing in Paris, couple of years later, still no rocky Horror Picture corwds back then. but in the age of youtube and deluxe blu ray 2/4 k restaurations.......and the Palma being anointed most cool director ever......Tarantino must be so jealous. Phantom/De Palma/ Williams stand very tall these days. The movie lost none of it's cool (or message). let's just hope they never do a remake.....

You need to come out to the next Phamtompalooza here in Winnipeg. It's been an almost-annual event since the early 2000s. As recently as 2017, Paul Williams can sell out a big room here in the Peg (seriously, he's a rock star here). It was a magical night: Paul did a set, then they ran the movie, then a local band called Swanage performs the entire soundtrack (well!). At the 2006 PhantomPalooza, we actually managed to reunite pretty much the entire cast. There is a documentary about the weird relationship Winnipeg has had with this film here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/a2mapIdqm9J9gpI

Sad... They could have argued that Death record is the (ominous) name of the company while Swan song was, in fact, just a more casual brand (in order to not frazzle the artist and public). Let's face it, in the 70's/80's people tended not to look kindly at edgy stuff. But a swan is somewhat corny and aloof symbol, universally binded to beauty, grace and ... Classical ballet. This movie is a must watch.

I didn't actually see the movie until 1977 at a repertory theatre in the small town where I lived at the time. Did you know it was Canada that kept this movie alive long enough to see a wider release to general movie theatres? Strangely, Winnipeg Manitoba was the initial hotbed for all things 'Phantom...' back-in-the-day. DePalma focused on the interest from Winnipeg for his film which gave him the resolve to push 20th Century Fox for a wide release of what was initially considered a cult-noir film.

I would like to know, why in the movie the "band" is known as The Juicy Fruits, but within the context of the credits and the LP album, they are known as The Juicy Fruits, The Beach Bums and then The Un Deads. Since the LP would have had to go into print BEFORE the movie came out, one would think that was an early change. But then the film credits the same three bands as well.... and the credits should have been one of the last things done - as a matter of fact they were because the song "The Hell of it" was intended for Beef's funeral sequence which may or may not have actually been filmed. Not to mention, the band is STILL called "The Juicy Fruits" even when they are on-stage as "The Un-Deads". Watch the film and you'll see the front of the Paradise advertising the 'Fruits and as the crowd rushes through the doors, the doors are plastered with the Juicy Fruits' Logo. There's also the entire sub-plot removed that explained more about Swan and his privacy. During the opening scene, he's hidden behind a mirror, then later during the Phoenix audition scene he's hidden in the shadows. Later, it's suggested that nobody is allowed to take pictures of Swan, but now he's appearing in broad daylight? What changed?? I think De Palma once mentioned the first rough cut of the movie was over 3-hours. Now THAT is something I would like to see released.
@necromaya4 ай бұрын
OK about the bands, it's the same guys in all bands. For the "Nostalgia" show, they're the Juicy Fruits, for the SURF show, they're the Beach Bums, and during then Beef musical, they're the UnDeads. BUT as a regular performing band they were the Juicy Fruits for legal purposes. The other band named were strictly those presentations, for the stage scenes.
@sylvisterling87822 ай бұрын
@@necromaya Yes. The cream of the jest was/is that they were "musical whores" who would get into whatever identity the record company wanted them in. In the novelization, this passage occurs: Swan: "The real problem is what the hell to do with those Jersey punks now that we've hoisted them up to the point where their a**holes are showing. Why did it have to be *them* Arnold? You're responsible for that.. Do you know that not a single one of them has come up with anything yet? All they do is wiggle their bellys [sic] and pant. It costs a fortune getting them on tape.... not a writer in the bunch." Philbin brings up another singer, Annette, and Swan replies: It's the same thing. Digging up material and hiring studio men. What I wouldn't give for a real talent."

I saw Phantom of the Paradise in 1976, when it was released in a double feature with Bugsy Malone, with Scott Baio and Jodie Foster -and Paul Williams music. Malone played first. It was okay, I guess. I turned 10 in August of 1976. Then Phantom was next and the theatre got noticeably fuller. I was impressed at the beginning -just the colors and energy that kicked the film off. Cool song and act, too: The film never scared me but I really enjoyed the horror elements to this movie. The audience was into it and my friend Jamie Davis and I dug it. When I began playing bass in 1978, I stumbled across the album soundtrack to Phantom of the Paradise and bought it. Still have it to this day . The new versions on dvd look fantastic. Excellent music , and truly one of Brian DePalma’s most enjoyable films to watch : all his movies have glitches of some sort and usually aren’t perfect, but this one, with its colorful yet cheesy aspect and satire and chaos all tossed together never bored me and it’s images still fascinate me to this day. Just watched the dvd a month or so ago. Jessica Harper was also in the superior Italian thriller Suspiria which, like Phantom, is super colorful and even more intense and would have made for a superb double feature if matched with Phantom of the Paradise. Better than Bugsy Malone.

What's ironic is that I have been getting regular emails for years from a woman here in Austin who has a Swan Song music-related business. It doesn't appear that she has had any legal problems with it -- I think it may have connections with an end-of-life charity or something (hence the name) so maybe that's why she has been left alone? Or maybe Zep still regrets not letting my bud Rick use Dazed & Confused in his movie so they're giving Austin a break now. I'll likely never know -- and that's the hell of it! BTW, my brother ran the Fox Theater here in the '70s and has told me tales about promoting PotP, so he's actually part of the history!

I don't know why but to this day this is the scariest movie to me. Maybe because I was so very young when I first so it. Maybe because it was so .... off. Otherworldly. You know why they dressed up Danny DeVito as The Penguin in that way.

Why don't they just get the original print and digitize it and digitally take out all Swan Song references?
