It's a race. These belong to many different people. They get prizes for which pigeons arrive home first.

They're racing pigeons. They take them to a certain location and release them, and whoever gets home first wins.

This has zero effect on the ecosystem of any areas near people, since these birds fly directly back to their homes. Other than the few who get eaten by raptors along the way, and a few bird poops dropped on their way home, this changes nothing.This is a bird race. They aren't releasing them to populate the area. *lol*
