Hey, sometimes staying relentless is not bagging hundreds of miles, but actually listening to your body and mind. Don't overdo it because more doesn't always equal better. Many runners who were dedicated but didn't listen to their bodies failed. Just look at Steven Scullion and what he was going through lately. Cheers sis, much love

Marathon training is so hard, let alone when you’re an elite putting in the miles you put in. I’m tired and I’m maxing out at 50 miles. I can’t even begin to imagine what 100 feels like. Just think of the end goal and how great that PB feeling will be. You’ve got this Phily 💪💪

It sounds strange, but there is something motivating about knowing that you get tired too, and that you have to adapt your training plan in the moment to suit how you feel. I find it hard to forgive myself for the same because its easy to compare to the pros and assume that you show up every day, it's reassuring to be reminded to take care of yourself! So thank you for consistently sharing the ups and downs

I'm with you on the treadmill. I used to hate it, didn't regard it as "real" running but I have to accept my aging body appreciates the even surface and the lack of downhills. Now do one session a week on the machine and sometimes do my hill session on it because you can run up as steep ahill as you like but don't have to run down for the recovery!

Great video - it's very interesting to see the stresses and strains that elite athletes go through - when from the outside everything looks like it goes so smoothly. Very refreshing video - real and raw! I remember when I was running at a good level - hardly a day when I felt really good - mostly it was struggling from ache to ache and treading a tightrope where any moment I could fall into injury oblivion. Love your content

You're a coach, so treat yourself like someone you coach, and say what would I say to someone I coach when they say e.g. I'm tired, etc. The advice becomes immediately obvious. I used this technique with my team (I'm retired now) when they would crawl into work, obviously sick but too guilty and determined not to take the day off sick (with pay...). "If you were managing a colleague, what would you advise them to do?". Works just as well when running. OK. Not 100% easy, but worth a try, and can save dumping on partners to make the decision.....and what great arguments that can lead to😱 keep on keeping on, you're a star💥❤

After watching Phily's videos, I bought On Cloud Eclipse last week and already had couple of runs in them. They are great for midfoot running so I had to switch from heel strike to midfoot running (to avoid blisters), which is not a big deal. I bought one size up, and they fit well. Overall, they are good shoes, they help a lot with maintaining decent speed in the long runs, I like them.

I am SO with you on your current headspace. I’m training for a fall marathon and I am currently DREADING every run. I have a 22 miler on the books tomorrow and I actually want to cry or vomit or both. This is my third marathon, but this feeling is new for me! I don’t know if it’s normal to feel this way in a higher volume training block, or if my body just cannot handle this much training. It should be easy to take time off, but it’s just not that simple. Why do we do this to ourselves?! ☠️🫠

I can really sympathize with this today. I'm in the first quarter of a 10K training block and did a 4 mile tempo run but my legs felt heavy from start to finish. This is even taking an extra rest day from my previous session on Tuesday (16x400m race specific intervals). So yeah, I got through it by repeating the mantra "Love the grind!" several times.

I just happened to watch a video by Sara Vaughan (a U.S./U.S.-based marathoner) just before watching yours. She faced a similar issue to you where the fatigue felt "heavier" than usual, i.e. it was almost oppressive and was affecting her performance in training sessions. She backed off of training for 4 - 5 days, doing just short easy runs, and focusing on sleep and getting in as many calories as possible. It seemed to help her. Your coach seemed to outline a similar approach, especially w/r/t fueling. Love your channel -- I always make a point of watching your videos. Hopefully, you'll get back to the 'normal' marathon tiredness soon 😊

Another great video. You can tell Phily actually likes ON shoes because she never really reviewed or spoke about her NB training shoes in the same way :P Maybe some bias speaking though, as I personally love ON myself (Cloudmonster is my go-to). The biggest negative I will always gripe about is that their prices are just not affordable for most.

I have been feeling exactly the same way recently during my marathon training. Granted I'm running only 36-41 miles per week which is like a joke for you. I've been super stoked hitting my paces and doing really well and enjoying it. But the past week or so has just been bleck and I completely bonked a long 21 miles last night and quit at 11. I've never done that before. I think emotions also play a huge role because I've felt sad and stressed recently. Running is hard!

Who schedules double-threshhold the day before a 20-mile long run? If you need to cancel a session to continue ... you cancel BOTH sessions ... and just run 6 and 6 or 7 and 8 ... easy. As far as fueling, every day you take whey protein in skim milk twice a day, after each session. I did that more than 40 yrs ago. She is hard to listen to, as she yells all the time and talks about what a wreck she is 90 minutes a day.
