Dude I know this is a year old post but I've been doing partscaster builds for about a year and just stumbled onto one of your videos. Just gotta say I wish I had seen this series before recently painting one with lake placid I mixed on my own with mica powder (works Great BTW ) because I would have done the relic work prior to final sanding and buff like you did it makes for a much more convincing job! Wanted to let you know I appreciate your work and posting this series, I've learned a few more tricks in my relic'ng bag due to you. I went ahead and sub'd, hopefully will catch any new guitars you do in the near future. Nicely done Sir....

Not a big fan of this type of relicing, but I've got a job for a friends strat and your videos are treasure. You definitely know what you're doing: attention to details, explaining every step - all is highly educational and probably the best i've seen there. Just subbed 🤘 Btw what can you recommend for two tone relic over poly sunburst? I've made it to bare wood where it neds to be, but I worry about next step of painting. Should I protect the wood? Should I polish areas where the paint isn't needed and sand the poly with lower grit where paint will be? Sorry for my English, hope you'll understand 😅 Big thanks!
@breilly6611 ай бұрын
I appreciate that greatly! So you're down to the poly clear or down to the wood itself?
@andreo_vajima11 ай бұрын
@@breilly66 To the wood just slightly at the edges. Poly finish with sunburst was already damaged and scattered to the wood in some places, so I thought it's not a big deal to worn em a little more 😅
@breilly6611 ай бұрын
I getcha. So you want to have the poly sanded to about 1k wet for good bonding. And yes you can create a non bonding surface to create premature chipping. But for patterns I've always taped. What kind of pattern?

Did I see correctly that you just used one can of nitro, sanded and polished that, with no clear coat right?? Looks awesome. Such an attractive black over Sherwood green. Congrats. Sorry they stole your gifted one.
@breilly66 Жыл бұрын
Yep! No clear over black! That Madisons/Graceys paint never fails. All temps and it kicks off already in sheen. A light cut and you get glass. And thanks for that about the original. It's alright. I figure by now, it's changed hands and landed somewhere that it is played and enjoyed. :) it got where it needed to. And got there in a pretty rock and roll way. And that ain't bad! Thanks Blane. Thanks for the video, little tough hearing everything with the music playing. A question, are you using anything on the cloth when you try to blend the outer areas to the less tinted area where the strings will reside? Thanks again.
@breilly66 Жыл бұрын
Just the minwax stain! The pickguard is already scuffed by that point so just the minwax. I work it in until it's nearly dry and that'll do it! Sorry bout the audio. I've since added mics. Hope this answers it for you.

@@breilly66 Thanks for replying, one more question if thats ok. "Background" -I have a 68 Tele Custom the original pickguard shrunk and will not fit any longer, -I had a duplicate pickguard made matching even with the pearloid back (which the 68/69's have), the challenge is the front of the new pickguard is "too grey/white" (hence the desire to age it) -The original 68 pickguard has gotten a slight greenish/brown tint to it which is beautiful but it is now case candy. "What I did, or didn't do" -I followed you instructions but I think I must have done a few things wrong I got the color fairly close to what I wanted (I didn't use sandpaper scuff it, I just used the scotch brite grey color and I didn't use a heat gun to dry it), I used the Golden Oak (but it was Varathane oil based Stain). -I installed the pickguard back on the guitar after about 5 hrs and "as I was strumming I was creating pick lines in the new pickguard finish", not sure why this is happening unless I didn't wait for it dry long enough? Thoughts/suggestions please? -Should I definitely scuff it with sandpaper vs the scotch brite? -Should I buy MiniWac and dump the Varathane Stain? -Will this need to dry for a few days or? Thanks I really appreciate you responding. Rich
@breilly66 Жыл бұрын
It sounds like it's a bonding issue. If strumming is creating lines instead of the preferred "long wear" and that's how it sounds. One path to take would be to hit it harder with the scotch Brite but move over to the white pad (finer) as this will create a finer network of abrasions. This will increase bonding and allow a more "worn" vs "scratches" look. A good way to know for sure is to look across it like you would a pond. You want a smooth matte finish. Any scratches could be ornamental. But watch out for any reflectivity. Those sections will drive you out of your tree!

@@breilly66 Thank you, one last question, should I need to let this dry for a day, two days or?
@breilly66 Жыл бұрын
As far as tint hue, I have lately been using a mixture of crushed graphite (pencil lead) and the wood stain. Mostly work it in till it is nearly a paste, then as it dries, use a mister (spray bottle) straight into the air above. Imagine signing a cursive g repeatedly. As the last of the water evaporates the mixture should be drawn into the surface imperfections.

Fantastic job! So what can you share about your minwax juice? I don't know if you describe it, it's hard too hear with the music. I heard linseed oil. I have this issue with some my strat. P-u cover, arm bar grip, knobs and pickguard. Nothing match. And even after 10-15 years alll the withe/ecru/beige stay different. It's anoying. Guess I could start smoking... like a a lot ;-) I was about the try the coffee water trick but you pocess seems smarter. Espacially for the pickguard.

Loving the episode, man............... I'm just about to have a go with a parchment pickguard. I see you using both a scotch brite and some 800 paper...... Did you give the whole thing a scotchbrite finish first? Do you use a particular grit?
@breilly66 Жыл бұрын
Started out with the 800 and finished with the SB to give it the microscratches. It gives you more of a hue instead of a change! Glad you are digging it CN!

@brywestwhit Жыл бұрын
@@breilly66 it’s the type that’s integrated with the black fabric wrapping both coils. I’d say pretty light, I don’t want to yellow them. Maybe scottbrite pads and graphite? I have a white Pickguard that I need to treat similarly. Looking for a 25-30 year age not vintage yellowed.
@breilly66 Жыл бұрын
@brywestwhit I'd say use a white scotchbrite pad with strings on in-between to emulate pick wear. Then use circular motions over the entire top to fade the wear together. Then graphite and buff to your preferred level of contamination. This should also kick start oxidation on the pole pieces. :)

Amazing videos. What are your thoughts on using steel wool on the body and hardware? Every seems to do relics differently!
@breilly662 жыл бұрын
Thanks Realer! Greatly appreciated 🙏 I have had some success with steel wool in the past but ended up favoring scotch Brite pads. The differentiation in the "swirl" grit level on the Brite pads is more consistent to my style I suppose. Also the pad improves as it wears out. But yes we all do! And that is how we continue to develop these interesting and sometimes bizarre methods of creating a story or recreating a memory. Which is pretty rad. How's it been on chrome? Any luck? I could never get chrome right.

I think it’s a cool atmospheric background to hear the guitar. I can hear your voice just fine.
@danitc38092 ай бұрын
Your Video is great,, but I have one suggestion, (If I may). The background music/guitar is too loud and distracting from your voice and what you are saying. Perhaps on an other vid you can reduce the background music feed to 50% of what you have in this one. Even with headphones it is tough to understand you. If mixing the sound directly through a channel is tough, do a test with a recording of both you speaking and the music on a small speaker behind you, and check the sound feed. If it's too loud move the small speaker farther from your recoding mic. If too quiet, bring it closer. Just saying... as a lot of us guitarists have had way too many loud amps in our faces for years and have trouble hearing a speaking voice over a fuzzed guitar. If you are using a phone to record this, phones in particular tend to lose human voice faster than guitar sound... so make sure you are closer to the phone mic to emphasize your voice. Cheers and thank you for posting this!
