I've been a carer of people with dementia. Relic really captures the "horrors" of this devastating disease. I found this movie to be extremely moving and poetic

Just for being a solid horror film for not very much money with interesting effects, it would be worth your time to watch. That at the exact moment it feels like it's going to reach the peak scare instead it just gets very, very sad makes it a real stand-out. I think some people will dislike it for that change, but it has a lot more confidence for doing that than the overwhelming number of horror films out there.

This film scared and moved me in fairly equal measure. It stuck with me for days after I had seen it. This and The Babadook you mention, are among the most grounded, yet horrifying films I have seen in recent years. Bravo to the directors

This sounds compelling and emotionally gruelling. The comparison with Babadook makes me want to see it.

But is it better than 90s monster film The Relic?

Great review. Just watched "Relic" last night & absolutely adored it; it may very well be the best horror film i've ever seen. Never thought i'd be in tears at the end of a horror film! The day before I watched it, i had just returned from a road trip to visit my mother, who we hadn't seen since pre-Covid days. We immediately noticed how she'd aged since the last time we'd seen her ... so this film really wrenched all of those feelings out to the surface. I've seen some folks comment that they should've just made a straight film about Alzheimer's if that's what they wanted to focus on - why the need for horror tropes? But I think the horror genre is appropriate here, because it emphasizes that aging, death, disease, etc are *really scary*.

I just saw it based on this Review. Thank you! Horror movie of the year. It is very powerful.

Thanks Mark for all your great work. You are my go to for an opinion even though I'm no film buff, I know you won't steer me in the wrong direction. I will watch this at some point, expecting to be equally shattered! Soupy Twist.

This movie is brilliant and an extremely impressive debut.

It was beautifully shot and well acted, but honestly it was a thin arthouse horror film where you get the metaphor, and hope that it'll go somewhere on a plot level, and it doesn't, and then it's over.

It isn't brilliant - a good, quite affecting ending, competently made. Not completely fully realized as a whole

The film was ok i guess, i'm more in line with rotten tomatoes audience score for this film(which is very low)... The critic's on RT seem to love it though, just like with the babadook, a film i thought was merely average.

This was not even marginally scary to me so I guess I have accepted aging and death. I am not supprised that a career person is destroyed by this as people have their careers as a cry to be remembered after they die and is driven by this lack of acceptance.

Watched last night and thought that it was a terrible film. Typical of a lot of modern horror sadly. It's a drama with some horror tagged on at the end and marketed as horror because that way it will get more attention. Inane dialogue, slow and boring until the last 10mins or so and even then it makes no real sense. If you are going to make a film about Alzheimers / dementia then by all means do so but don't try and pretend it's a horror film. A third rate Babadook wannabe, avoid.

I agree. I was scared to death by the Babadook and emotionally deeply affected. It has remained one of my favorite movies. When I started watching Relic, I immediately thought of the Babadook, but it turned out way weaker. I see the potential and there were some good moments, but it fails to deliver.
