The Gothic castle, on the site of a previously existing early medieval structure, was probably built (in the late 14th century) by the knight Krystyn from Koziegłowy, a supporter of Władysław II Jagiełło, later castellan of Nowy Sącz and commander of one of the private banners during the battle of Grunwald. The object was built before 1409, because it first appears in sources then. The stronghold was built on the plan of an elongated rectangle measuring approx. 50x25 meters. The main, stone-built part of the castle was surrounded by a perimeter wall. In the central part of the complex there was a brick residential building (in the form of a tower), a brick (square) entrance gate and a small paved courtyard. Additional protection was provided by two rings of ramparts, between which there was a moat filled with water. The outer ramparts were made of wood and reinforced with clay and gravel. The entrance to the interior ran along a causeway. An oval ward adjoined the main structure from the east, serving economic functions. In 1426, king Władysław II Jagiełło stayed at the castle. The property was owned by the Koziegłowski family, descendants of Krystyn. The castle was greatly damaged in 1457 and by the invasion of unpaid mercenaries from Prussia (former subordinates of duke Jan IV of Oświęcim). In 1519, the castle (together with the district) was purchased by the bishop of Cracow, John Konarski, and annexed to the bishop's duchy of Siewierz. The increasingly worse technical condition of the stronghold is described in documents from 1548, and especially 1598, when it was indicated that the castle was in complete ruin. In 1655, during the Swedish Deluge, the structure no longer had any significant military value, but for several days the burgrave and mayor Stanisław Kawecki defended himself against the invaders in its ruins. In 1865, the remains of the castle were dismantled on the orders of the tsarist authorities, and the acquired building material was used to build a road from Koziegłowy to nearby Gniazdów. Since then, the structure has survived only in the form of illegible fragments of foundations and the outline of moats. It was not until 2022 that archaeological research confirmed the previous hypothesis that the castle was built in the central part of an early medieval stronghold (dating back to the beginning of the 12th century). Archaeologists uncovered a significant part of the eastern side of the late medieval castle, including the foundations of the gate tower and the perimeter wall along with the north-eastern corner. Further archaeological and revitalization work on the facility is planned.
