I have been carving for years .Thanks for helping me to introduce power carving to my hand carving, now I don't feel that I am chiding . Thank you so much. Julien Lamarche
@ChiseledOutdoorsCC2 жыл бұрын
I'm assuming "chiding" you mean to be cheating? lol. Yeah I don't think there is anything wrong with mixing the traditional gouges and power carving together. I guess I'd consider myself a hybrid carver I suppose. I definitely prefer carving with gouges, but I'm still collecting them and I don't have a gouge for every situation yet. Sometimes a dremel is the only tool that will work for a particular area of the carve.

Omg that is beautiful!! You are definitely a master carver, at age 64 I just took up carving caricatures, nothing as nice as this!
@ChiseledOutdoorsCC3 жыл бұрын
Thank you, that is very kind of you to say. Yeah whittling and caricature carving is a great way to get into the craft! It's much cheaper and you get some really fun and unique results! I've been wanting to get into it myself, but I find myself drawn to the relief carvings more I guess. Happy carving!

Thanks!! Honestly power carving is a great asset to have in the tool box and while I prefer using traditional gouges, there will always be areas that I grab a dremel for in a carving. I’d say I’m a hybrid carver lol.

Now that was very enjoyable watching. I believe that we all have untold skills that hasn't even been unlocked because we have failed to try to do anything. I've learned this through the years from making jewelry to somewhat wood carving but never really got nowhere with a wood carving but I want to re-enter. Not to say I want to jump in on something like that that looks like that would take a little bit of skill and knowledge of what you're doing, but I bet I can work my way up to it.

This is obviously quite spectacular... I came here looking for some tricks on how to relief carve buildings (I'm think about a storefront scenes generally in the same way as this piece), and it definitely helps. I'm wondering now about two things that I hadn't considered: 1) I have a set of basic gouges that I bought off Etsy, but I wonder if I need more specific tools to make mine look anything like this and 2) I've been using basswood for my creations so far, but I wonder if this (pine) is better? My shavings don't seem as... buttery as yours. Very beautiful, can't wait to see the final piece (I'm in the middle of the video at this point). Inspirational!
@ChiseledOutdoorsCC Жыл бұрын
Thanks!! I’d say that basswood is very similar in softness to pine so if your not getting clean cuts with basswood I’d question how sharp your gouges are. What selection of gouges do you have? I think you’d be able to carve something like this with gouges. The only thing would be maybe some texturing that I use a power dremel for. I’d love to see your carving when it’s done!

Hi Me again. At the 8:10 mark what gouge are you using? Sometimes it looks like a v-tool to me. I just can't tell. Thanks
@ChiseledOutdoorsCC10 ай бұрын
If its the gouge I think you're talking about it's a mini spoon bent V gouge. It's actually a game changer tool to have. It's bailed me out of some tight spots when doing any sort of deep relief carvings.

Very clean work. What finish did you put on it? At first it looks like varnish but then what is this dark liquid?

Hi, At the 7:43 mark it appears to me that you are flat gouging in another cut between the slats. Do you do this to help keep a straight line? Also, as the slats run off into the distance do you make any compensation for that? I don't mean by making them thinner but when you bevel them? I know there is not much distance . Thank You.
@ChiseledOutdoorsCC10 ай бұрын
Yeah I did use the flat gouge to help me maintain a straight line. As far as compensating as the siding goes into the distance, no I didn't make any depth changes. I kept them consistent all the way across. Hopefully this answers your question.
