After a stressful year, VICE’s Taji Ameen is in need of a massage. However, if you get pampered in a One Star Reviewed massage parlor, is it still a pampering? To find out and put the business to the full test, Taji received an array of wellness procedures, from a foot rub to the full body thai massage.

I used to go to a massage place that didn't even have rooms, it was just one big room with beds and curtains like in a hospital so you could hear EVERYTHING and EVERYONE. There was a language barrier too so I never spoke to any of the people who I got massages from, but the place was always packed. I went there 2xs a month for about a year. It was awkward every single time because we would just basically point and nod and smile haha, but the massages were good so it was worth it. It was a highly rated place though, just looked super janky.

First off, I loved this video. Second off, that thing she said about it being a "good pain" perfectly reflects everything I have heard about Eastern massage. Oh absolutely. That's the thing about cupping, usually all this hurts, but afterwards it's like your blood flows better. Acupuncture is not quite the same, needles aren't so scary because they're so thin you barely feel them except the tiny prick when they first go in. I am not sure about its effects, they're not so tangible unless you combine the two... Here's my story of the time I had acupuncture in my back, and cupping on top of that. What came out of my back (the massager took a photo to let me see, or was it my mum?) was very satisfying... a mix of clotted blood, blood plasma, and somehow... oil?????? Oil???? i know i feel fat sometimes but is that OIL???? i hope i'm remembering this right. the masseuse did not explain exactly what that was. but i did feel better afterward.

This was hilarious!!! As a licensed professional CMT, she did know what she was doing but her nails should have been cut and we don’t speak to clients unless spoken to. We want you to experience the most from your session & that includes being able to fully relax. We also should check in with pressure to make sure that you’re fully comfortable. We can do great deep work but to your level of comfort. Communication between MT & Client is extremely important & due to the language barrier, is probably why most clients felt awkward & uncomfortable. Other than that I think they both did great & completely know what they’re doing! 💕

as someone who has worked receptionist for a massage place for a few years, i can say first hand that usually the key for ( properly trained/educated) therapists is that they shouldn't be making small talk ( not including consultations) unless the customer initiates it, and would like to vent/ talk about their day, I totally get the awkward tension in these scenarios tho where they aren't fully regulated. its just out of respect for you to enjoy your time, and it allows the therapists to do their job when they're better focused on... not talking. ya know? there's literally nothing rude about it, i promise, these people are just so talkative in their daily lives they don't know when to just relax and legit just try not talking for like an hour.

I'm from Thailand and Thai massages are support to hurt, with some even asking what pain level you would prefer. I do agree her nails were long but everything else looked standard. Although painful it does help with tension after, some people are not use to having that type of massage so they jump to conclusions instead of doing research

As a massage therapist, with Thai being my favorite style, nothing seemed terrible that I saw. The only constructive criticism I'd give is that yes, her nails were a bit on the longer side for a therapist and at least what I learned in school is that you shouldn't have your nails painted since they could potentially chill and get paint flakes on your client, and maybe listen more to the client's body language and sounds. Massage does uncover muscle tension you didn't always know was there, but you should always work within the client's comfort level even if you think they should have deeper pressure. You can still get work done within the pressure level they can handle. As for techniques, those were all legit. I've knelt on clients' backs like that before and most have really enjoyed it! Granted, I only weigh 115lbs, but she didn't look very big either. I think people probably weren't sure what to expect when they went in, and it was just hard to communicate due to the language barrier. And no, massage therapists don't normally make small talk unless the client initiates it. A lot of people don't like being talked to during massage, so we don't do it. Overall, nothing seemed too bad. Definitely didn't look worth the one stars.
