Religion in Iran 1AD to 2022

Religion in Iran has been shaped by multiple religions and sects over the course of the country's history. Zoroastrianism was the main religion during the Achaemenid Empire (550-330 BC), the Parthian Empire (247 BC - 224 AD) and the Sasanian Empire (224-651 AD). In 651 AD, the Rashidun Caliphateconquered Persia and spread Islam as the main religion. Sunnism was the predominant form of Islam before the devastating Mongol conquest, but subsequently, Shi'ism became eventually utterly dominant in all of Iran with the advent of the Safavids.
The current religious demographics of Iran are disputed. According to the 2011 Iranian census, 99.98% of Iranians believe in Islam, while the rest of the population believe in other officially recognized minority religions: Christianity, Judaism, and Zoroastrianism.However, because irreligion and some other religions are not recognized by the Iranian government and apostasy from Islam may be subject to capital punishment, government figures may be distorted. A 2020 survey by the World Values Survey found that 96.6% of Iranians believe in Islam.On the other hand, another 2020 survey conducted online by an organization based outside of Iran found a much smaller percentage of Iranians identifying as Muslim (32.2% as Shia, 5.0% as Sunni, and 3.2% as Sufi), and a significant fraction not identifying with any organized religion (22.2% identifying as "None," and some others identifying as atheists, spiritual, agnostics, and secular humanists)

It's quite interesting to know that Zoroastrianism has more similarities with Hinduism rather than any Abrahamic religion. The Ateshgah of Baku which was based on Indian and Persian Inscriptions, was a Hindu-Zoroastrian place of worship. Two communities worshipped together like brothers 😊

As a muslim, i accept the fact that the Arabs did persecute the Persians and caused Zoroastrianism to decline. Many muslims say that it was peaceful and stuff, but it was not that peaceful like in Indonesia and Malaysia. They had to flee their own country, so sad. They had to practise their religion privately, under the cloak of islam. The Persians were so advanced and their culture was great. There was no slavery and they supported freedom of religion. No muslim should be proud of this. The Qur'an itself says, "Let there be no compulsion in religion".

thanks. i think the source of this video is a survey from "Gamaan group" (the best and accurate stat we have now. with faults like zoroastrian population people ,its better than gov stats!) .important tip and fact is the rise of "irrelgious, atheist, agnostic, humanist" population and a secular shift (everyone who lives in iran can realize this subject specially in young people) . but why u consider muslim population about 70 million? according to gamaan stats, mulsims are about 40% of iran population (40 millions population based on that stat, however personally i think its maybe more than it, about 50 miilion).
