I remember reading in an Introduction to World Religions text for a college course (super interesting btw, honestly) that a lot of Japanese people tend to cherry-pick parts they like from different religions and follow them without feeling that they contradict each other. This is a concept I actually rather like, and it sort of fits in with my own views of my faith.

I feel very good and comfortable to practice my own culture rather than praying with arabic or latin or any other language. But, anyway people have a choice to be whatever they want. Peace

Thank you for this very informative video! I will be living in Japan soon, so I was very curious and interested in learning more about the Japanese people's belief. This video is perfect! I am of a Christian religion, and it is our belief that we have "stewardship" over the land and nature. This means that it is our responsibility to care for the land, but we know that it is only our responsibility for some time, and it will live beyond us. We care for it for future generations to enjoy it as well. I think we have a similar belief as the Shinto and Buddhist cultures!

I really like that in Shintoism they believe that spirits exist within all things. By putting a spirit in the trees and other natural things, it encourages Japanese people to pay more respect to their environment than people in the west.

Another splendid video, Aya!!! Thank you so very much for answering questions we've been wondering about religion in Japan. Your analysis is quite interesting and your sense of humor is so wonderfully amusing. I especially liked your incredulous look surrounded by question marks when mentioning those numbers claiming both Buddhism and Shinto religion nearly double-exceeding Japan's population. It is interesting that approximately 3/4th of the population appears to be secular in their beliefs. Secularism is also increasing in America. Your video is so very well done, yet again! Thanks so much for creating it and filling us in on this very interesting possibility of correspondence between the dangers of living on the Ring of Fire and animistic religions. This is very interesting. I never thought of it before. Mr. Birzer scolded me for using your comments section to write books so I'd better call it quits for now. LOL... Personally, I really like the more laid back nature of Buddhism and Shintoism in terms of religion. I like the closer relation with nature. I feel like a lot of western religions like Christianity and Islam enforce outdated morals on people.
@michaeldougfir98078 жыл бұрын
+Simok1234 // The morals are good forever. You may say that times have changed, but why would it change what is right? God says He does not change. So His message is the same. Customs may change, but God's word does not. And those morals are for your good and mine. With them we have a better life on Earth, and can get closer to God, and find salvation and peace.
@Simok12348 жыл бұрын
Michael Dougfir Not all religious morals are outdated, I'm talking about stuff like the sexist / homophobic aspects of Islam and Christianity. It's also that fact that Islam in a way insists it's followers to be violent towards non-believers, which has caused terrorism through out the world. Having faith towards these religions is fine, but I feel like these aspects make them unfit for modern society unless we are to take these aspects.
@jhanthony28 жыл бұрын
+Michael Dougfir IMO opinion, some morals have been bad forever. The Bible is full of bad morals that should have been dismissed centuries ago.
@andrewevans38718 жыл бұрын
look i respect your views, but i might like to add some perspective to your comments on religion, morals and modern society. lets take war and conflict as the example, most people attribute most loss of life in war, modern and ancient to religion. this is however entirely incorrect! all world religions combined minus Islam - have caused less than 4% (7% with Islam) of all of humanity’s wars and violent conflicts. Further, they played no motivating role in the major wars that have resulted in the most loss of life. The truth is, non-religious motivations and naturalistic philosophies such as eugenics employed by nazi Germany, bear the blame for nearly all of humankind’s wars. Lives lost during religious conflict pales in comparison to those experienced during the regimes who wanted nothing to do with the idea of God - something showcased in R. J. Rummel’s work Lethal Politics and Death by Government: lives lost due to Non-Religious Dictators Joseph Stalin - 42,672,000 Mao Zedong - 37,828,000 Adolf Hitler - 20,946,000 Chiang Kai-shek - 10,214,000 Vladimir Lenin - 4,017,000 Hideki Tojo - 3,990,000 Pol Pot - 2,397,0003 there for rether than religion it was non religious, atheist, and naturalistic ideologies that were responsible for the overwhelming majority of human suffering throughout history and particularly in the 20th century. As such it is worth stating that rather than religious ideologies having no place in the modern world, perhaps it is the far more harmful non religious ideologies that should have no place in a modern civilised world.
@yoylos3p7 жыл бұрын
Simok1234 Christianity has outdated morals? Like don't kill, don't steal, love your neighbor, do onto others as you'd like do onto you? Just to name a few teachings. If society is at the grave state that it is, it is because this moral basics are being ignored. Please inform yourself.

You don't have to be a strict 'believer' to appreciate nature and the kami. Most Japanese that I've seen will say they don't believe in a religion,but will still offer prayers to ancestor spirits and go to shrines, temples, and festivals. Everyday Japanese things are connected to the 'religion'. So it's become less about the dogma and more about a way of life. Living pure, being kind to nature, etc. Every time the eat and say 'itadakimasu' or when the finish 'gochisousama'... Those are giving thanks for the meal and it's derived from shinto belief in nature and appreciation.

This video is very interesting! About Christian bible, it says that God created the world and also created humans, and we humans have to take care of the Earth. In Genesis 1:28 it says we humans rule over the fish of the sea, the birds, and over every living creature that moves on the ground, but it doesn't means like we can control the nature, we believe that God is the only one that can control it. I hope you understood. Anyways, thanks for this video!^^

In fact is exactly like like you said. I'm from Ocident, I'm brazilian. I'm an athieist, but I like to study religion and was rised as catholic. Our christianity tend to base his beliefs in a dicotomoy between god and his creation, soul and flesh. dinvinty and nature. The first are the higher and the good and, in general, the second are the lower and the evil. Some ocidental tend to tell you that it's not the case but the reason why is the most of them only knows the western relgions, that have basicly the same aproach. When you compare western religios, as chrsitianiu, judaism, zoroastrism and islam to oriental relgiions such as xintoism, boddhism and taoism the difference is pretty clear in that point.

If someone wants to know more about the science of historical religion to confirm if what I said (you don't have to believe in me) is true I strongly recomend to read the series of book The Masks of God writen by Joseph Campbell, a specialist in this area. But for a initial book i would recomend The Sacred and the Profane by Mircea Eliade. In fact the word of the bible are very clear about this strong opossition between soul and flash, the transcedental and the nature. In oriental religions such as buddhism and hinduism you can reach god or the divinity by your own means, since the divinity is inside of every living thing. But in christianity god is SEPARETED from the nature thatHe have been created and the human is too little to rech god by yourself, needing GOD to reach him through his mercy. In fact that's the meaning of Christ: the men is separeted from god, since the Original Sin, and too weak and litlle to rech the greatness fo god, so god send his son to save teh mankind, beacause the man CAN NOT save himself. It's totally diferent by the idea of divinity in Asia.

I am a Christian and we believe in one God which is in three persons, God the father, God the son which is Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit. Our belief is God created the world and put man in charge to care for the plants and animals. However, we don't worship the plants and animals. We are however, to care for them and take care of this world that God had created. A lot of people from different religions misunderstand Christianity but our main purpose as Christians is to share the love of God, the creator of all things, to everyone. But that doesn't mean that we want to force everyone to believe. Our God commanded us to love all people even when some of them persecute us. So when you meet a Christian & they share their faith they are only doing it out of love. It is up to everyone wether or not to believe. God bless! ❤️️

Buddhism and Shintoism talks about the Tao or the Way. In Christianity, the Tao become one of us, or become Man in Jesus Christ. Jesus literally means " the Way to Salvation" and Christ means anointed or chosen. So, in essence, those who believes in Tao are, in essence, like Christian.There is no need to convert them, but a friendly gesture of communication and comparative belief is a good thing. Christians also believe that God is everywhere or omnipresent.So He is basically everywhere, but He can be somewhere also.We are part of this God.So we need to respect everyone and everything, as manifestation of the Divine Tao. I am an Eastern Orthodox Christian.The most peaceful and friendly Christian denomination.

+Norman Schopenhauer 2) If it is really problem someone go to shrine and pray, but most of us may I asked advice from my friends and parents. 3)Someone Yes and someone No, It depends. 4) I have no idea about " Christian exorcism Miracles " but, there are people ask temple to expel their evil spirits. There are many people who believe Miracles are caused by god 5)I don't know well, sorry. My own opinion is... Ancestors are in the another world (In Japanese Anoyo あの世) and they are also have watched affectionately as descendants grew up strong and healthy. They can't change present life. These are too tough for me, but I try to answer rest of it later!

idk why but shinto belief seems very similar to the origin cores of sanatana dharma ( hinduism) like the nature loving and worshipping concept and that there is god in everything. Rig veda describes and admires nature for the first verses. There are gods of trees and sky and water and u can still find ppl practising these beliefs in the villages(FOR EXAMPLE my own village)....

Thank you for the lovely video. I am a Christian my self and I believe I can say something about the Japanese sense of "Kami" and Christian sense of "God". I think Japanese people are referring to "Kami" in a sense more or less close to the Christian counterpart of the "Creation". According to the Bible, it is God the Almighty who created all including nature and creatures living in it. Since God is invisible, there is no doubt He created all the innate and invisible laws of nature as well. You have stated very well that since we Japanese have always been exposed to natural disasters, which are considered to be uncontrollable. And it is true, as well, we human beings are created accordingly to "govern" nature, not to"dominate" with the technology. I think we Japanese, from the ancient times, have been aware of the invisible power that lyes within the creation of God. It is also stated in the Bible that all the creatures should worship the Creator. When we hear the chirping of birds, the beautiful tides of the sea, and the whispering hiss of the blowing wind, they are singing songs to their Creator. In Christianity, we believe that there is a higher power than nature itself than all the creations. I think Japanese people are very sensitive to perceive these invisible powers and the life of nature. Since this is the case, as we will be exposed to the internationalized world, Somehow we Japanese will come to sense that there is a greater Being that created all these beautiful things. In Jesus name, Amen!

an interesting topic, thanks for the insight. I can think of only one statement in the Christian bible that might be misunderstood as a controlling factor by someone who isn't aware of the way: Jesus said that if you have sufficient faith you could tell a mountain to dislodge itself & fall into the sea and it would. also being part native American the belief is a father spirit and a mother earth which

I really loved this video, specially the part of how you view nature. I would love it the rest of the world saw it that way; maybe we wouldn't be destroying it so thoughtlessly as we do. I personally don't believe in any god, but marvel at the nature because of her force and beauty.

I am a Christian, and I could give a lot of Scripture references to tell you what I believe. I will say that, as the Bible (the only fundamental Christian book) says, God created the earth and made a garden. God formed man with dirt and woman with a rib from man. They were made out of dirt; they lived in a garden with many animals. The first mention of humanity being against nature is the thorns and thistles that were a result of the man's sin. The ground was cursed from that point on. Ever since then, humanity has had to fight nature just to survive; but that's not the way things were meant to be. The animals weren't even meant to fight each other. Eventually, God is going to restore that harmony. Prophecy says that the lion will eat straw; the wolf and the lamb will dwell together; the leopard and the baby goat will lie down together. If you want to read more about it, here are the references for what I was saying. You can just type them in on www.blueletterbible.org. References: Genesis 1:1, Genesis 2:7-8, Genesis 2:21-22, Genesis 3:17-18, Isaiah 11:6I don't mean to give you trouble; this is here for you if you wish to read it. Have a great day, and I hope you will see God's goodness in these writings. Blessings.

i was wondering since 80% of japan is buddest and some buddests are athiest-buddest and satistics show japan is 35% athiest how many are athiest Buddest or Shinto Athiest or all three?
I like the Japanese culture of being connected to family ancestors and the harmony/peace with nature this is much like the Indian tribes of North America who also believed gods were in all of nature.

what is religion of japan ?? just like in india 82 % are Hindu 16% are muslim & rest are 2 %.

puneet garg Thank you for the clarification. Per your query: Folk Shinto (or non religious) - 52% Buddhist - 35% Shinto - 4% Christian - 1% Other religions - 1% No comment - 7% Now, some elaboration (my apologies for being verbose) "Folk Shinto" refers to Japanese who are not formally a member of any Shinto sect but still observe Shinto rites, worship, holidays and have ancestral alters in the home. Point of fact, Folk Shinto reflects how much the essence of Shinto is integrated into daily life. Other religions refer to Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Jainism, Bahá'í Faith, Ryukyuan folk religion, Ainu folk religion, Chinese folk religion, Taoism and Confucianism. And from a anthropological perspective both Shinto and Buddhism, in Western terms, are "atheist religions" as there is no belief in a Supreme God/Creator God. Also, the Japanese definition of religious is to be formally a member of a organized religion. Based on that one could say 88% of Japan are non-religious and think of themselves that way. The only reason Shinto and Buddhism are classified as religions is because Western scholars, based on the 8 aspects of dogma: beliefs, ethical principals, myths and stories, religious experience and/or spirituality, rituals, sacred texts, social structures and symbols, view both loosely as religions for lack of a better term. Shinto and Buddhism are actually forms of philosophy as is Confucianism. I hope this satisfies your query.

Is it true that 80% of Japanese God are actually Hindu Gods?????????????????????????
@waiphyohain7 жыл бұрын
Nope. Only Buddhist deities are hindu gods. Shinto gods are 100% Japanese.
@dawnfm007 жыл бұрын
James Wai Phyo Hain Buddhist deities aren't Hindu gods either. Hindu gods exists in the 3 Vedas, you won't find them in Buddhist literature.
@waiphyohain7 жыл бұрын
Indra of Hindu became Sakra of Buddhism. The same chief god. 4 guardian gods of buddhism are legitimate vedic gods. There are sun god Surya, etc. They are no longer prominent in modern Hinduism, though. Naturally, gods (devas) are all mortals in buddhism. In that sense, the concept of gods is completely different.
@dawnfm007 жыл бұрын
James Wai Phyo Hain So Vedic gods sounds like body guard of Buddha, could you name those 4 gods? According to early Buddhism, there is no god who is immortal. Even the great Brahma which is considered eternal and creator in Hinduism, is bound to pass away and meet death.
@waiphyohain7 жыл бұрын
For Buddhists, devas are like the rich and powerful people of another countries, their riches and mighty power have little to do with us directly. Gods simply live in very luxurious long lives in a different realm. The four guardians are en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four_Heavenly_Kings. They are god kings of yakṣas, kumbhāṇḍas, gandharvas, nāgas semi-divine races. They report to the god king of second heaven, sakra AKA Indra the sky lightning god. The mighty trickstar god Mara (kind of Buddhist satan) is even more powerful than sakra but say, he does not bother human realm either. No incentives to do so. Mara was simply too rich and powerful and live in higher heaven. Mara does not move around killing humans either, not that free and reports to no one. However, gods are not bodyguards of Buddha. There are the guardians of dharma, the natural order. They do not protect Buddhists, but dharma instead. The sinner Buddhists simply go to hell, the subscription does not guarantee the heaven. Not all gods are Buddhists either. The good might become gods according to their own good karma (actions) regardless of their faiths.
