Minnesota is home to lots of Catholics, Lutherans, and some Buddhists and Muslims too. Let's discuss denominations and religious groups in Minneapolis and beyond!

I wouldn't have imagined that Minnesota would have some of the largest Buddhist and Hindu temples in the country, how fascinating!

I visited one for my world religions class. It was fascinating. I've also visited one of the mosques in the Twin Cities for that world religions class as well, They had converted a traditional Christian church into a mosque, removed all the pews and due to where the mosque was located face the back left corner of the building for their service. We have a very large immigrant community in the Twin cities (Somali, Liberian, Ethiopian Cambodian, Korean). There are a lot of different cultures in the Twin cities Metro.

Would love to see one of these on Massachusetts, or New England in general! We get the stereotype of being all Catholic, but the religious history of the region is really complex & interesting. Thanks for a great video!
@jeffkardosjr.38253 жыл бұрын
I don't get that stereotype. Many people would probably think of Pilgrims.
@bigscarysteve2 жыл бұрын
@@jeffkardosjr.3825 The stereotype is due to the fact that Boston was overrun with Irish immigrants after the potato famine.
@jeffkardosjr.38252 жыл бұрын
@@bigscarysteve But that isn't all of New England.
@Sebman11134 ай бұрын
I stereotype upper New England and Conneticut as mainline protestant and I stereotype Massachusetts and Rhode Island as Roman Catholic in my head. probably is more complex though.

I’d love to see a video on Texas! With the size and location of the state, there’s an interesting mix of religious views from all over the world represented there along with the expected presence of heavy evangelical Christianity common in the southern US!

John Piper, Greg Boyd, and (I think) Todd Friel have spent a considerable amount of their careers in Minnesota (if not the entirety of their careers). I'm surprised you didn't mention John Piper's church or seminary in Minnesota.

My thought was, in general, not to list a lot of names that people may or may not know, and focus on groups or denominations instead. I'm torn because I am very familiar with those names too, and it would be interesting to some people. I probably could have mentioned Bethel College, it's a very large Converge school in the state.

My first thought was "Lutherans!" Lots and lots of Lutherans. No doubt that was some echo in my head of the Lake Wobegon stories of Garrison Keillor.

As a Minnesotan who lives in Minneapolis and went to Bethel University, I would like to note that generally speaking, the pietist streams run throughout many of the Christian protestant denominations and sub groups in the state
@xmodemrm3 жыл бұрын
Curious if you are located here or just picked MN because of the history. I'm a MN resident who attends Eagle Brook btw, and I think this was very well done. I really appreciate your analytical approach to this.

Independent Baptists aren't as popular as main line denominations but have a good share of churches in the state. GARB (general association of regular Baptist) churches are out there but are largely an Iowan denomination.

I think this video also can allude to the one you did on the grey line between mainline and evangelical, as a conservative Lutheran Church might still be considered mainline? Still concerning how popular the ELCA is after straying so far from the Bible

Kind of bummed the Evangelical Lutheran Synod wasn’t mentioned for being headquartered in Mankato, Minnesota. It’s bigger than the Laestadians and the Church of the Lutheran Brethren, so I’m not sure why it was skipped other than it having fellowship ties to the Wisconsin Synod.

Would love to see the tribal religions across the country
@bigscarysteve2 жыл бұрын
Every Native ethnic group had its own religion. You're not going to find much in the way of outsiders converting to tribal religions. What you need to find out is where are the places where significant numbers of Native Americans still exist, and then find out among those places which have clung to their tribal beliefs and which have converted to Christianity.

In the rural areas, you will find many very conservative, Christians. The big cities have such a distorting effect on the stats
@011angelfire2 жыл бұрын
Point taken, but the real picture should be of the entire population as a state. Where they live is not relevant. The rural areas cover the most ground, but they are not the majority and they are not representative of the state’s total makeup.

4:24 I don't think this map can be correct. Large parts of Pennsylvania are Lutheran, other parts Baptist.
@miss_naomi73772 жыл бұрын
Lots and lots of Lutherans in Minnesota partly because of Norwegian, Swedish and German immigration.
@bigscarysteve2 жыл бұрын
@@miss_naomi7377 Yes, and that wave of immigration came after the failed revolutions of 1848. There are lots of Germans in Pennsylvania, but many of them can be traced back to people looking for religious freedom in colonial times. Mennonites were thus disproportionately represented among German Pennsylvanians--and they've also had more time to convert to other confessions.

I can't complain. Minnesota when it comes to religion are welcoming. But from a Christian point of view with the openess of the LGBTQIAS+ movement having children exposed to all sorts of sexual depravity from pride parades. And being strong supporters of abortion child sacrifices to their god Molock. Minnesota well at least around the Twin Cities is to liberal for me and I live there.
