The Jedi are definitely similar many religious orders from Buddhist monks, the Christian crusaders, or even the Greek stoics.

The Sith on the other hand have similarities to the philosopher who called himself "the antichrist" Nietzche and also macchiavelli.

The jedi characters in the Original Trilogy especially feel like Crusaders in a sense.

Another parallel could be made with regards to the Old Jedi Order before the Empire and the New Jedi Order led by Luke. The Old Jedi Order could be seen as a representation of the Christian Catholic church before the Protestant Reformation. Both were rigid, hierarchical, and focused on politics. But the reformation created sects that were far more focused on the individual and they even let priests marry similar to how Luke opened up the Jedi Order and "reformed" the Order.

Did you know that Lucas was raised Methodist? Anyway, I feel that Lucas has become more liberal or abandoned his Methodism upbringing (or probably never believed it, based on his Skywalking biography) with his more Buddhist outlook these days. Palpatine is based on the devil; it's been stated before (making of TESB and ROTJ) Also, for entirely weird yet sensible reasons (the Vietnam war allegory), Lucas/the making of Star Wars books keep implying or referring to Palpatine as Richard Nixon.

I didn't realize Lucas wrote a biography. That is very interesting.
