Religious trauma refers to the psychological, emotional, and sometimes physical distress that some people may experience as a result of their involvement in a religious or spiritual system. It happens when religious beliefs, practices, or institutions cause significant harm that has lasting negative effects on a person's well-being. Anxiety, depression, and identity issues are a few of these effects.
Deaf people who experience religious trauma can face additional stress due to the small size of the Deaf community and the difficulty of finding support.

I leave church many years ago because people did hurting my feelings. Degrade spirit me by people in church . But I believe in GOD . I did pray myself before eat and bedtime. I don’t want go to church because destroy my good high spirit. Now, I am struggling to get my life back. Too late for me.

Wow Tamera. First I saw you on ASL Coffee Podcast, now I see you here at DCC. I can relate to most of what you said. I also grew up in a Catholic family. 20 years ago, one of my former Deaf friends I met in my native Cincinnati, OH (we've both left since then) sent me many hostile emails forcing his religious beliefs on me. I often feel very alone in my chosen area, Orange County, CA as the only ASL events or Deaf events are Starbucks gatherings that are mostly attended by students who will leave the area to monetize their signing skills and Mormon missionaries who will return home outta state at the end of their missions. I'm the only fluent signer who is not religious. I hope in your area, wherever you are, that you are NOT the only atheist signer there. Leaving religion was a decade long process for me. I started when I was 12 and finished in time for my 22nd birthday. On 9/1/2005 I was in the ER for suicidal ideation and another patient was preaching away for over an hour. Right then and there I made up my mind: I NO longer believe in God.

I remembered my Mom tell me to go to church when l was about 11 or 12 years old. I has no friends Mexican people in Catholic church and no interpter. I remembered l always looked at the elaborate images of Jesus and Mary. I didn't learn any words from Catholic church because of spanish that l learn to talk a little spanish from my Mom and family. I went to Texas School for the Deaf in Austin, Texas when l was 12 years old.

I recommend you go to Mark 7 camp. You will love it. It is a spiritual and beautiful place.

Thank you for sharing. It’s unfortunate the traumatic experiences you had with religion. Understand, God never called us to be religious, but instead to have relationship. He only desires our hearts ❤.

I had same problems but no marriage religion is jehovah witness then baptized in 2013, now in 2023 i did guit them cuz nothing happens when god were against queer community but the president signed the bill for gay and lesbian, so i did went back to be one.. gay, so what! God does nothing about it.🎉
