The band received a ton of letters from people, mostly teenagers, who had felt suicidal, but found strength in the song.

REM's drummer Bill Berry wrote most of this song, though all of the band had a part in it. Guitarist Peter Buck stated ""the reason the lyrics are so atypically straightforward is because it was aimed at teenagers", and "I've never watched Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but the idea that high school is a portal to hell seems pretty realistic to me." In 2005, Buck told the BBC: "If you're consciously writing for someone who hasn't been to college, or is pretty young, it might be nice to be very direct. In that regard, it's tended to work for people of a lot of ages."

Need to watch original video by them. There’s messages of each persons thoughts. Was bit surprised you didn’t remember R.E.M. as you did Losing My Religion 8 days prior. Unless just your posting dates. They did get some slack for the “ saccharin” lyrics. But Michael Stipes voice has such emotion in it that you hear the collective pain thru his singing. Also. Please react to Disturbed A Reason To Live. They did song for same purposes as this one n include info at end. It’s different take but another risky move by heavier band. R.E.M. was considered Alt Rock originators. Great reaction. Love your stories n love that you really get to feel like we know who you are. Thanks. Sori stay healthy lovey

The string arrangement to Everybody Hurts was written by John Paul Jones, bassist for Led Zeppelin.
4 жыл бұрын
He did a great job putting beautiful string arrangements with very heartfelt words and making one hell of a beautiful song that has helped many people get through the toughest times. I remember when it first came out and crying my heart out because it is so beautiful and meaningful and became more meaningful when I watched an interview with Stipes and he said that he wrote this song about/for a friend of his who had just committed suicide, it was very sad.

i owe this song my life. when i was in the deepest darkest pit of my depression i had a handgun against my head sitting alone in a dark room, i heard the click of the empty chamber (i still dont understand why it didnt fire, because it was fully loaded) and right after the click, my radio turned on and it was this song.........i burst out in tears and realized it was a permanent solution to a temporary problem and i was only passing my pain onto my family and friends. so thank you Vin and Sori for doing a reaction to this. i haven't been a subscriber for that long but from what i've seen you two are by far the best part of my days... i love watching your new uploads and going back over your repertoire. so again thank you for being here. i look forward to being a part of your "community" for years to come.

I used to bawl my eyes out listening to this. I teared up, tonight, just remembering what I went thru. But life goes thru cycles, and you have ups and downs. But this song has helped me and many others through the lowest darkest times in our lives, and I have been listening to it at least 5 times a day every day since my husband got locked up in federal prison in 2017, I have been in a really bad dark place since then and hearing Stipe sing hold on, hold on, everybody hurts helps me get through the day and night (bawling but making it). Don't know if this will pop up but you guys MUST review some Peter Gabriel. And since we are on the subject of suicide maybe try 'Don't Give Up'. It is a duet with Kate Bush. A two for one!

If you're interested in getting more female representation in your exploration, I suggest Savages, "Shut Up". Intense, great musicianship, post-punk. Live at KEXP performance, great audio and video: bit.ly/2HmmFWf

This song was in the movie, When A Man Loves A Woman, with Andy Garcia and Meg Ryan. Excellent song and excellent movie. Since I’m from Georgia, of course, I’m partial to R. E. M.
