She seems really genuine. I like the way she doesn't fake it when she hears of Flannery O'Connor for the first time.

Such intellectuals. This is one of the reasons why almost no other band can compare!

Not really. Anyone can be an intellectual if they pay attention and don't act typical. REM just chose to have something to say, instead of big dumb rock. In interviews after all these years, there's not something necessarily profound there

So many people think of them as a 90's band, but it's important to remember that they were huge even from 1983 and their first album. CMJ voted "Murmur" the best of the year over "Thriller" in '83.

I met those two after the show that night. I'd love to have a copy of that show. The request for King of the Road was mine. I was one person back from the stage and they asked for requests, so I took out a piece of paper and wrote down King of the Road and handed it to the guy in front of me who Handed it to Mike Mills. Mike laughed, showed it to the guys who also laughed and then they did it!

"I was standing there watching the show and I closed my eyes and all I saw was colours..." At once the most 1980s and the most Erica Ehm quote ever!

That was a really well informed 1985 interview. Nice job, Canadian Smarter Version of Martha Quinn.

Thanks for posting. They really lived a bohemian lifestyle before signing to Capitol. The 80’s seemed like the last time an underground really existed in music. Maybe some parts of the 90’s as well albeit used somewhat by bands as a stepping stone to stardom esp. post Nirvana.

Ha! It's kind of the do-it-yourself thing. I thought a while back that we could take that and make it take-others-and-make-them-do-it-your-way but then we went back to do-it-yourself. Love stipe

I love Nick Drake, too, but 'Bryter Layter' is generally considered to be an example where over production hurts the songs. All the strings, horns, piano and extra percussion are not necessary for Drake's songs, imo It's the one I listen to the least. I defintely feel they got the production right on 'Five Leaves Left' and "Pink Moon'.

I didn't realize "twee" was a musical genre. What I meant was she seems a little empty-headed. She's dressed like a rodeo clown and makes a blank face when one of the most prolific Southern writers ever is mentioned. But I'm speaking from an American point of view so forgive me if this is not a well known writer in Canada.
