@@finelife6019 It's a gem of a film. The score is beautiful. I particularly love the end scene and the emotionally tense scene when she catches him reading a novel.

@@graybow2255 the book scene is riveting especially the part where mr. Stevens was looking at her so intently. I couldn’t decide if I love the movie or book more.

@@finelife6019 Exactly. I don't remember a scene where a possible kiss or love confession or gesture was so intensely resisted but could be "read". I read the novel about 10 years ago but my English then wasn't good enough to enjoy it, while I watched the film a couple of years ago.

@@sametoyoutoo8509 Yes he could have. Although Hopkins or Hopcyn is most common in Wales, it can also be an Irish and English patronymic surname and he could have English antecedants from other sides of his family. He's definitely got Irish heritage on his mother's side, Muriel Yeats. He is a distant relative to the famous Irish poet William Butler Yeats! Emma Thompson has a close Scottish heritage. Her mother, actress Phyllida Law, is Scottish. I was born in Wales, Morgan is primarily considered a Welsh name but it also has Scottish and Irish roots and I have English ancestors! Us Brits are a mixed breed bunch!🤣

As a Brit, it does get tiresome watching all these rather quaint films about upper class type people. Go watch the movie "Kes". There's the REAL Brits.
@utssb8 жыл бұрын
The film is centered around Mr. Stevens and Miss Kenton. They are working class. The film isn't quaint at all. It's about a butler who is exerting a massive amount of control over himself as to feel nothing. He tragically pushes away a woman who is attracted to him. His mind is obsessed with an abstract concept of complete servitude because his father infected him with it when he was a child. It's meaningless tradition that has no consideration for Stevens. You know, like being a Manc.
