Not obvious, but okay, at least we have that. 3) But you can't let other people download it for free - really?! From all these three options this looks like the most benign imo.

@oorto13932 жыл бұрын
I think there's basically two approaches to remastering the game, either he can try and implement the TV show look (toon / cell shading) or to go with a more RTX aesthetic, which for the characters I think could be more of a claymation look (toons that are made of real physical materials), similar to how the looney toons look in the new Space Jam movie. Personally I prefer the latter because I think it just brings a lot more opportunities to do fun stuff like the super reflective windows and to get creative with how this world and these characters would look if made out of real-life materials.
@ZarkWiffle2 жыл бұрын
@@oorto1393 Why not both? You could put cell shading and other tricks to make the characters look like they do on TV and try for as photorealistic as you can get with the old assets for the environment. You would end up with something like Roger Rabbit or the new Chip N Dale movie

Just a quick tip for blender: when you want to select vertices, make sure you turn x-ray mode on (its the icon with the two overlapping squares on the top right corner of the viewport that can be seen at 14:48). you've probably gotten this message a million times by now, but in Blender, if you have floating/disconnected meshes, you can go into edit mode for the object, hover your mouse over the object you want to select and press L to select the disconnected/floating object. This depends on your selection mode, so if you are on vertex select, you need to hover over a vertex and press L, if in face select you hover over a face. It helps in avoiding straggler vertices while deleting stuff. It's L because it selected "linked" face/verticies/edges. Using box selection is great, but you need to disable Limit Selection to Visible so you can actually select objects behind object in the view as well

The shiny windows (particularly on the houses) looks kind of off. I think this is because there's these significantly more realistic textures next to the cartoony ones. A possible fix for this might be to add old texture back on top of the shiny texture but opaque, this will likely work best with the windows that were originally colored blue. I have no real experience with game design, so if you give my suggestion a try and it doesn't work then apologies ahead of time. Loved the original game and love the work that you're doing so far.

@@Cmdrbzrd well fair use laws allow for releasing mods. They allow for upgrading graphics, changing shaders. Reubs could be in trouble by even releasing this video. Reviewers and content creators on KZbin can make money but reubs loses any fair use protection if he is modding the game using property he does not own (that's even reading the manual to learn the controller scheme, and having some implementation of what he read in the project) at that point he could be sued in civil court and possibly criminal. You can't take the McDonald's logo and redesign it then use that to gain anything that has to do with wealth in this country. So KZbin views aren't any different, that's how Nintendo has kept many videos off KZbin showing the modification of switch as well as switch emulation videos disappearing. Applying this to reubs Simpsons project, At this point Reubs just did 10x the normal amount of work he usually does but this time for nothing. Even with the original developers permission, he still would need permission from Fox. Losing all video revenue would be devastating and wrong. So as a token of good faith, I agree with never even releasing this to the public. You're extending a token of good faith to the ones who own the rights. Think about all the other characters and super heroes modded into current games. They are intellectual property and not only is that stolen and used without permission, it's often a ripped sprite from another game where a developer spent money to create. KZbinrs are collecting add revenue which doesn't benefit the original game nor any rights holders as much as it would if they were to do a superhero cameo. Like Snoop Dogg in warzone, it's financially beneficial if they do it rather than someone mod in Snoop Dogg themselves from another game now there's multiple people and companies losing money. My only wish is that Reubs contacts the staff over at the nonprofit archive . org. their mission is to archive all digital media so that our digital history can one day be looked back on and experienced rather than stories being told from generation to generation. Reubs should certainly have direction in his Will so the release of this project to archive . Org will happen.
@dnut.ape.way2soon9892 жыл бұрын
Basically by not releasing this at all, Fox and the original devs would be more likely to not try to demonitize his content. 7.5 million views, no big KZbinrs or media picking it up, very poor return viewership, poor subscriber/views ratio on his most watched video and all of these issues are an issue with KZbin overall with many creators. I even checked out the Patreon and even that has a relatively low amount of patrons compared to the views on any of his videos. He is used to doing work and putting it to the side, but to do this amount of work and shelve it but only this time you've been demonitized on now what's been your most popular video series, that would be a financial hit considering all the unpaid work and the moment you try to capitalize on any of your work, you're sued. I really hope we can get someone who works at Disney to at least send this guy a message to ensure him he won't get demonitized if he continues and shows off more of the gameplay.

Check drawcalls as you add more detail and specifically when you introduce a new material. Every new material adds one drawcall. It is very easy to accidentally end up with 1500 drawcalls and not really notice it in the editor, before physics objects, AI, pathfinding, game logic etc are added. The game engine does do a lot of optimizing for you, it can also mask the problem. This is where texture atlases and other such methods come in handy, houses in one area that all use the same shader can be combined to one atlas, so you can cram a lot of them inside one draw call. I was surprised that UV mapping was compatible... which would be destroyed if you used atlases, you would need to manually remap all of them. There may exist tools that do atlases for you, grouping objects/meshes and creating new image maps, UV mapping them but.. those usually make the image maps large, then it is a question if 4096x4096 atlas is better than 8 extra drawcalls... Drawcalls are done in CPU, everything has to wait when we process these, including GPU. It looks like each texture is its own material now, that adds a LOT of drawcalls to the base conversion already, and adding more on top.. I think it is time to check drawcalls.. or rather, it was since usually these videos come late and the project is much further ahead, so.. i hope i see performance monitoring in the next episode.
@reubs2 жыл бұрын
Using one big master material :)
@R-SXX2 жыл бұрын
That is new to me, since I always thought materials and textures are virtually free in unreal since you can't make a texture atlas for certain tex, or it isn't needed. Especially the one draw call.. Where did you read that? In the official documentation?
@squidcaps43082 жыл бұрын
@@R-SXX One drawcall per material has been true for the last 30 years. The engine can optimize things and combine materials but is very important metric to follow. Each drawcall has to be processed and then sent to the GPU. The more you can fit inside one drawcall, the more efficient it becomes. Procedural vegetation is one good example where the drawcalls are minimal while the amount of stuff to draw is huge.

I love what you're doing but I think there are super easy ways to make it look better: 1. Don't obsess over having it look "next gen". Upscaled graphics and lighting is already enough to be next gen 2. Keep the cartoony style. Most ps2 games didn't look like hit and run at the time. They were all trying to look "realistic" and now they look super dated. Hit and run still holds up because it's a cartoon game. A good reference would be TLoZ Windwawaker remake. 3. Turn down the saturation significantly. Our brains associate saturated colours with digital animation (aka the later seasons of the simpsons). Our brains associate desaturated colours with cell animation (aka the early seasons of the simpsons and the first 3 seasons of spongebob). Most people are interested in this remake for nostalgia and emulating the look of these old cartoons helps with that. I also think it just generally looks better to have faded tones in a cartoony game. Not call of duty levels of faded. Just do a side by side comparison of old vs new simpsons episodes and you'll understand what i mean
@Ratzmoonmopes2 жыл бұрын
The way you think and talk about games "holding up" and being "dated" makes me sick and disgusted. I would never think or talk about games that way because I'm not infected with the same brain disease you are. ALL old/retro games look AMAZING to me. Even Harry Potter PS1 looks amazing to me BECAUSE it looks like a unique alternate universe, the fact that doesn't look like real life but a hybrid of something real and fake is what makes it so good. I get very immersed in all graphical styles equally without discrimination. All older game's graphical art styles are amazing, ESPECIALLY because they were a creative product of the times and technology. Please change the way you perceive older games, because it's toxic, pointless and you are only choosing to be negative for no good reason.
