Hi Just be carful when adding more torque/power, the manual was designed for 150hp and pushing more power may be beyond the ability of the gearbox. I’ve been using a blue spark in line chip which has made a great improvement on power delivery and mpg. Loving your work

@Scott, I hope it works out well and you have no issues. If the tuner is good and knows the engine, it should remain safe (for the engine) and reliable. I have the 3.2i6 NA engine, so it's a very different scenario for me, but it's fun seeing these kinds of improvements on a Freelander 2. All the best, and I will see you in the Freelander 2 Owners Group forum some time soon.

I'm happy with the 36 mpg I get and the performance from mid to high end on a good run. However, I hate the painfully slow start from standing unless I 'gun' the throttle. Can a remap alter that?

Help needed Scott, just wanted some info if you have had this particular issue with your FL2....or know of this issue, as I watch all your posts and you are the Guru..... While driving my 2007 mod with 1/2 tank diesel the fuel guage just drops to empty and light come on? Stopped and restarted engine, drove 5miles and same thing again, have you any idea or heard of this before? I'm up in the Orkney island and certainly no dealership here. Plus I enjoy the tinkering as you do. Thanks Jamie
@BeavisPits3 жыл бұрын
Yes, common fault. There are two sender units, one in each half on the saddle tank. The signals are averaged for the gauge. Sounds like one of yours is faulty. Check the wiring first as it gets wet and corrodes. If it is the sender then you access it below the rear seat.

Before I had the timing belt done on my FL2 2.2 tdci i could get 40mpg on the motorway cruising at 60-65mph. Now I stuggle to get 35mpg, it feels like the power comes in later so maybe retarded cam timing, not sure if there is a way to check this? But I know on the VAG cars which is what I am use to you can actually see intake and exhaust cam timing using software (vagcom/VCDS), and it can be finely tuned by making small adjustments to the cams, with surprising result in how the car feels and drives with better economy at lower rpm as power comes in sooner.
@BeavisPits3 жыл бұрын
The cam sprockets are meant to be locked with a special tool while the belt is changed. If this wasn’t done then it is possible one or both have jumped a tooth. You’d have to remove the timing cover again and look for top dead centre markings to see if everything is in the correct position. There are lots of other things which could cause a drop in mpg. 35 is still good so maybe just live with it.
@MrZimmaframe3 жыл бұрын
@@BeavisPits Yes I haven't done one on a FL2 but on my VW even after using locking pins it can be off slightly 1 degree or 2 and with belt stretch once it has setting in. I would be interested to see if it made a difference with the FL2's. Most people generally wouldn't be bothered. After advancing my intake timing and retarding exhaust timing, on a different vehicle it went from 52-54mpg to 55-61mpg. Interesting stuff fine cam tuning.

@@BeavisPits If you have a bluetooth OBD reader, and the Torque app there's features in there where you can add a digital boost gauge and others. @mikeyb1987no13 жыл бұрын
@@BeavisPits did Empire do a check of the car prior to mapping it? The only reason I ask is that I did a 30-70 run in 4th gear and my time was 12.0 dead. It’s a MY13 so less power but more mid range torque. It’s significantly quicker than yours even when it’s mapped. I’m only highlighting this in case there is an underlying issue with yours.
@BeavisPits3 жыл бұрын
@@mikeyb1987no1 I did a before and after test and it was 5 seconds faster. That is good enough for me and shows the remap achieved something. My car is old and tired, and has a lot of heavy gear in the boot, not to mention a roof rack, lightbar and offroad tyres. Other newer FL2s are going to be quicker, but I’m not competing against anyone else. It’s like parkrun…The only person you are racing against is yourself. I’m sure if I removed all the junk from my car and made it aerodynamic it would go much faster, but I’m happy with it as it is. That said, there is a slight whistle from one of my intercooler hoses. Not sure which one. When I find it and replace the hose it may add a couple of seconds, we shall see.

All the extra bits that you have bolted onto the outside of your Freelander 2 is creating a lot of wind drag which is why you haven't seen such good mpg for a long time. I found a pair of roof bars cost me 3-4mpg. Unless the tuner has a dyno you don't really know what the true benefits of a remap are. Just my opinion.
@BeavisPits2 жыл бұрын
Agree with you on the drag. I like my roof basket and lightbar though so they will stay attached and I accept it will cost more in fuel. Gareth tells me that Empire Tuning are getting a rolling road soon. Watch this space!
