Certainly one of the world's top masters at drawing and painting. The proof that great art comes from inborn drives and sensibilities, and cannot be explained or taught --- is that none of Rembrandt's many students could rise even remotely to his level. Sometimes we get to see bistre wash drawings by his students, notice the overall weakness in composition and handling, but then see that the Master stopped by their easel and with a few quick firm brush strokes instantly "corrected" the blandness and weakness. It is miraculous, but this skill cannot be taught. My own love of Rembrandt remains undiminished. Back in university art school I recall being openly ridiculed for harboring an unspoken appreciation for Rembrandt because a rumor circulated that I had once painted a copy of an early self portrait. Rembrandt was out! Only Rothko was in! I relish the study of every scratch and line in Rembrandt etchings, which are really open displays of genius at work. Their human conveyance is palpable.

‘A genius’ doesn’t even begin to describe ‘Mijnheer van Rijn’. We are blessed to have had him. 😊 5:01
