Carl Frank's , the smaller guy with the fight wins the fight. Badass Remco can hurt people ask Orlando Weit.

Remco was such a poor judoka. What European organization was he the heavyweight judo champion of? I can't imagine the level of competition if he somehow was the champ. I can't stand it when people bring him up as an example of the Gracie's inviting a grappler to ufc 1. Remco and Shamrock don't count. Frank became an incredible early mma fighter, but Ken stagnated and never was really far ahead of the early 90s pancrase/shooto guys. He was just bigger. why does every comment I leave turn into a rant about something else

I think Remco was a good judoka - maybe not as good during the mid-90s as he once was, but even when he lost, it tended to be against quality competition. Nevertheless, judo was geared towards Olympic-style competition and not immediately applicable towards MMA. It might give you a head start, but if your training's been geared towards throwing and little else, you'll be starting from scratch against ground specialists.

I consider the era of Frank Shamrock light years ahead of other fighters in... 1997. Frank Shamrock in 1995 is not much further ahead of anyone, he has Pancrase skills, not yet hooked up with Maurice and TK, Ken didn't stagnate in that Ken did fight in all forms, but his training style didn't progress in skill development, it was endurance. Most fighters pre 1997 only had a few trick ponies and the rest you improvised. Remco was not a poor Judoka , I believe the biggest different in Remco vs someone like Gerard Gordeau, is that Gordeau was both trained and a dirty street fighter who would resort to anything to survive. Remco was more sportsman and only a few times in all his bouts does he show a killer instinct. I don't think he had as much mental toughness , like many fighters when the game got into an area they weren't prepared and skilled at. I love these early days of NHB. And no Remco was not at UFC 1... it was that other dutch guy mentioned. I think when you look at that era the Gracies did bring the best of what was known and who would come. The fact that the Gracies knew the Dutch fighters were some of the better fighters in the world at that time is why they were invited. So hows that for another of your comments turning into something else :) These old videos are great, enjoy them for what they were and as a visual historical reference to the sport in that era.
