Nice work. You did a good job of capturing the major events that led to their rise in the second half of the 80s. In addition to changing the offense to the wishbone, McCartney also brought back the black jerseys. Prior to that they looked like a cheap imitation of UCLA. The black jerseys gave them an identity to go along with their more powerful style of play. Going from 1-10 in 1984 to 11-0 in 1989 is one of the best turnarounds in college football history.

The 1994 Colorado Buffaloes were my favorite CU team to watch growing up as a kid. They were absolutely incredible finishing 11-1-0 and winning the Fiesta Bowl against Notre Dame. This team was an offensive machine and absolutely demolished elite defenses with Heisman Trophy winning running back Rashaan Salaam, quarterback Kordell Stewart, wide receivers Michael Westbrook and Rae Carruth and tight end Christian Fauria.

@ivand5670

@@ViperKeeper2070 Explosive is correct with that group of Hagan and Bieniemy. What made that team so special was their ability to run the option incredibly successfully. They would wear down defenses by controlling the clock with four and five yards a pop and a cloud of dust. It was a great era of pure smash mouth Colorado Buffaloes football.

CO, national champs. What a freaking joke. There is a chart on the web that shows the strength of the conferences from the beginning until a few years ago. From the late 70's until 1995, the last year of the Big Easy, the conf was in a a free fall as far as strength of difficulty. Only the MAC had an easier SOS in 95 than the Big Easy. Makes ton of sense. When has CO been a contender otherwise? All the teams had to do was blow through the conf and win their bowl and there you go overinflated results.

You did a good job with this considering that it sounds like most of this happened before you were alive, or at least following sports, but there's definitely a few inaccuracies: The coaches names are Bill McCartney (Mc-cart-nee) not McCarthy, and Gary Barnett (not Garnett) and Dan Hawkins (not Brian Hawkins). Someone else noted the Miracle in Michigan - that would be a good one to include. It's also worth noting that CU was something like .05 BCS points away from playing for the National Championship in 2001. That was the last time that the team was truly top 5 good. The recruiting scandal of the early 2000's did have a MASSIVE impact in driving the trajectory of the program downward, but that was compounded by a series of disastrous hires after Barnett was fired. Dan Hawkins was brought over from Boise St, at a moment when no one knew that the real genius behind Boise State's rise to being a powerhouse was his Offensive Coordinator, Chris Petersen. Hawkins proved himself to be a fraud, so when Hawkins was fired they tried to get back to a more old school style so they hired a former CU player in Jon Embree. He only lasted 2 really, really bad seasons. Then they brought in Mike Macintyre, who kind of stabilized things and brought CU their only decent season of the past 20 years, but he surrounded that with 4 other seasons that were decidedly not decent at all. Then Colorado FINALLY got in a good coach in Mel Tucker only to have him get stolen away after only one season (a season with a losing record, no less) by Michigan State. Then they replaced him with Karl Dorrell who without question was the worst hire of the bunch. Nobody understood why that hire was made, though Tucker put Colorado in a really bad spot by leaving the program literally within days after National Signing Day in the spring. When you're not an Alabama or Ohio State kind of program, you can miss on one coach, or maybe 2 in a row, but if you miss on 3 you're in a really bad spot. And if you miss on 5 in a row then honestly I don't know if any coach other than Prime could bring you back! Good to see this program have a pulse again, though.

The school admin has played their role in the ineptitude as well the last 15 years. They would be happy if football were done away with altogether there. After the Sarkisian deal fell through I think they had to settle on Dorrell as the "safe hire" due to his past ties to get regent approval. No one just sat there and a lighbulb went off thinking "why didn't we think of KD before!!??"

I recall McCartney had great success recruiting in California, sometimes over 20% of roster from there. idk if CU needs a similar formula in today's recruiting, but that worked. I would guess recruiting is much more national these days. On a simplistic level, it was interesting how Buffaloes replaced Sooners as top 2 Big 8 power with Huskers. CU's rise began in earnest in 1986, while OU's decline started in 1988. By 1989, Colorado was a national power while OU was on a dramatic decline. I was at 1989 game in Norman when CU beat OU for first time since 1976, and it felt like a changing of the guard.

The Buffaloes were still a formidable team at that time, and for a couple of years afterward until the program took a nose dive in 1997 and while they've had a handful of decent seasons since then (most notably their Big 12 championship season in 2001) they haven't been at the same level since.

Good video. I only want to point out that the wish bone was an old offense that most teams were going away from when Colorado started running it as more quarterbacks were able to throw and better athletic receivers were becoming more prevalent. Most teams that ran it had over the top backs and a stable full of them. Like Auburn and Georgia with William Andrews, James Brooks, Joe Cribbs and UGAs Hershel Walker. We used to say 3 and half yards and a cloud of dust. Auburn even had their own variant called the flex-bone. Beside the point, but the Buffalo is one of the top 3 mascots in the NCAA. I love seeing them holding on for dear life while he runs around the field before games.

Great Product, good music! 9-10 wins for Coach Sanders, his biggest humps will be USC, Washington, TCU, and Oregon State. Question also remains, can #2 stay healthy and who is his back up? The defense may be interesting this year, can they recruit some dawgs on that D-Line?

I vaguely remember Colorado having a national championship and this video inspired me to look it up when it mentioned they started 1-1-1 AND had a victory due to the 5th down. They actually split it with Georgia Tech who was 11-0-1. Seems odd that Georgia Tech wouldn't just win it outright with zero losses while Colorado did have one and a deserved 2nd one. Guess they were just dominant down the stretch despite a 1 point bowl win. What's more interesting to me is there were a LOT more independants back then including Miami, Florida St, Boston College, Pitt, Virginia Tech and Penn St.

Could argue that they should have lost to ND in the Orange Bowl too because of a Phantom Holding call on Rocket's punt return that would have won the game for ND. Colorado was gifted this title through cheating off the field and getting a number of huge breaks on the field.

Georgia Tech played a far weaker schedule. You can also go watch the 5th down game, Colorado players slipping and falling all game due to the turf and not having the right shoes for the turf. In fact the play right before the 5 down set the TE caught a pass and was turning upfield to go into the endzone untouched but, slipped and fell... 5th down was Karma if anything. Big 8 made Mizzou change out the turf a few years later when other teams had the same issue.

They didn't finish in the Top 10. They were in the Top 10 late in the regular season, but got blown out in their last 2 games, first by Washington in the final regular season game and then by Oklahoma State in the Alamo Bowl. Those losses dropped them to 17th in the final AP Poll and 15th in the final Coaches' Poll. It was still by far their best season since they joined the Pac-12, though.

"But about two decades before Deion, The Buffalos were college football royalty." '03 ?? Royalty?? Come on. Last time I remember Colorado being in the mix for any amount of time was '03 and that was only 10-3. One year. Before that the only run they ever had was '89-'96. Even then they had a less than stellar 3 years in the middle of it. Winng 25 out of 36 games. Royalty are your Bamas, USCs, Texas, Nebraskas. They earned that by multiple runs and championships. I have nothing against the Buffs. I just think giving out that level of title, to any team that gets a good run once in 50 years, should be discouraged.

A huge note that needs to be made on the 5th down game, they spiked the ball on “4th” because the refs said it was 3rd. They ran the ball in on 5th down. No one reasonably spikes the ball on 4th down. It really didn’t make a huge difference.

People really need to have watched the 5th down game to understand what a shitshow it was the entire game and how it even got to the point that it did. CU was also screwed over by the refs the week before in the loss at Illinois. They had a 3rd and 4 where getting a first down would run out the clock. Illinois jumped offsides which was not called. That penalty would have been the first down that allowed them to run out the clock. Instead they had to punt and Illinois went down for a game winning TD. Refs errors can work both ways...
@mas5867
@mas5867 Жыл бұрын
Said another way. GT tied NC that year. What if GT gets one more play in that game, wherever? All it would take is just 1 score. Surprised the AP didn't get together and decide that while it wasn't COs fault, they did benefit from the error. Righting the ship, votes to GT.
