Remembering Art Laboe | KCET

Radio legend Art Laboe is credited with pioneering industry standards such as audience requests and song dedications, and he is believed to be the first DJ to play rock 'n roll tunes on Los Angeles radio. He was also among the first DJs to play music by both Black and white artists, and he built a major following among Latino communities across the region. Laboe was also known for his live concerts that attracted top acts, but were beloved by audiences simply for seeing the famed DJ in person.

My dad's group had 1 hit in the 50's that appeared on the Oldies But Goodies series of albums (Vol. 2) of which Art Laboe owned the rights. I had been looking for a copy but discovered the re-issued LP didn't have the song as the rights could not be secured before release. I once worked for someone who knew Mr. Laboe and mentioned my search. Imagine my surprise when I found a copy of the coveted LP on my desk one day! Mr. Laboe generously gifted me the disc so I could give my dad a seriously unique Father's Day gift!!! Thank you, Mr. Laboe for making my dad's day and for all the great music. RIP.

@Mark C I'm telling you, Mark, the smile on my dad's face that particular Father's Day, I will never forget. It was such a thrill to be able to give him that piece of history of one of his musical accomplishments. Dad is a Renaissance man, dabbling and perfecting skills in various fields (art, music, carpentry and, most importantly, Christmas waffles! LOL)

I was at a dance at the El Monte Legion Stadium in February 1959 and Art laboe was broadcasting live his “ oldies but goodies “ show , and he dedicated the time to Buddy Holly, the Big Booper , Richie Valens and others during the week that they all died in the plane crash. It was a very emotional time for us “ teens” . I moved away from Calif in the early 70’ s and was able to get his station for a while, then I couldn’t. We all just kept on dancing 💃🏻 🕺🏻 to , “that’ll be the day , Peggy Sue, Donna, Chantilly Lace” with tears in our eyes, many many of us hugging “ people of all races . I’m so fortune to have been there at the time ( and am still here to say it 😊) RIP Art Laboe. 😭.

I hope 60 Minutes recognizes Art Laboe! He had such an impact on us as kids as a Mexican growing up in Cali. Playing great Motown, Oldie but Goodies songs. Going to be missed and should be honored. Great video!

Art laboes what can you say that hasn't already been said, he was 97 years young and was still taken from us. A beautiful angel gone too soon, I was listening to art back in the 70s as a little guy. No trip to LA was complete with our sitting out on Venice beach at sunset watching the sun go down and listening to Art Laboe. Art you are in heaven now looking at the face of Jesus and spinning those records for the heavenly host, we will see you soon my brother when we arrive in God's Golden garden and will listen to the Art Laboe connection again and see you hosting those wonderful shows again RIP brother😢❤🌹

I've listened to Art. B4 he would close his show, he would play "Goodnight, Sweetheart, Goodnight" while the callers say their goodnights, and I love yous. After, the song "Sleepwalk" would play as he leaves the air. RIH 🎙️🕯️🕯️🕯️🕯️🕯️🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹

For the most part, he honored Black music phone call requests from mexicans and mexicans only. Rarely did I hear song requests from Black voices.

The Art Laboe concerts were the first on the west coast to successfully integrate black, white, and Mexican audiences while the city council and police were trying to put an end to it. Yes, his biggest audience were probably Mexicans, but to insinuate that this was racism on his part is just flat out wrong. By the way, Art was Armenian, but he was loved by all races including many blacks!

Mexicans listen to oldies. Partly because in our culture, we recycle old songs (in Spanish). So we listen to the same songs that our grandparents did too. Old songs are never out of fashion for us. If he didn’t get many calls from black folks it’s probably because they’re listening to the hip hop stations instead.
