We look at the life and legacy of trailblazing Black feminist scholar and activist bell hooks, who died at the age of 69 on Wednesday. We speak with her longtime colleague Beverly Guy-Sheftall, professor of women's studies at Spelman College, who remembers her as "a person who would sit with young people and community people and students and help them understand this world in which we live, which is full of all kinds of domination." Working in the tradition of intersectionality and Black radical feminism, hooks's critiques of "imperialist white supremacist heteropatriarchy" called attention to the interlocking systems of oppression in hopes of eradicating them, Guy-Sheftall says.

She was beyond remarkable, she was prophetic and a visionary, and most notably absolutely loving. She challenged and provoked, and demanded us to love more deeply and more profoundly. I’ve read almost all of her books, bought her children’s books into my workplace for the adoptive youth that I work with, and her specific work “Rock my soul: black people and self esteem” is the book I clutched to my chest in tears when I heard of her passing! This is a phenomenally moving segment by Democracy Now. I did not know that much about bell hooks, although other writers I follow often have referenced her. This gave me a real feeling for why she was and is so revered. RIP bell hooks. Everyone should throw a little money to Democracy Now every year, even $5 per year makes a difference if you are a listener. I say this because it is the "Holiday Season" and a time of giving. The quality of reporting given to the world by this non-profit news service, which is award winning, is so important in a time of corporate takeover of the mainstream news. A voice of true Democracy, a light in the world. I have been donating something faithfully for many years. If all listeners gave even a small amount they would be safe. The first time I faced an "angry black woman" was at my first ever job at McDonalds. She was extremely defensive and over reacting in a way that it didn't make sense at all. It took many years for me to understand why she had such a negative actitud. The actitud of most people within my community towards African Americans was simply fear. I remember one of my neighbors, she will panic just by seeing Black men a corner away from her. Once she was assaulted by a black African American. It takes more than listening to the media to actually understand. You have to experience driving as Black in a mostly white middle class neighborhood before 2015 and even go back to the many historical events and even get to know the actual Black Community outside television to understand. This is why critical race theory is vital to solve racial issues in US.

I use to respect bell hooks util I read her scathing diatribe against Dr. Betty Shabbazz. She seemed to envy the fact that Dr. Betty remained faithful to her husband - Malcolm X - even in death and that she was a noble woman who effused toi denigrate the moral tenor of her late husband’s legacy. Dr. Betty, like her late husband, put her life on the line for the liberation of her people and became a widow with six young and tender children at a young age. For, me it is not just my love of Malcolm X that made me spurn bell hooks but here, a privileged academic, revelled in taking pot-shots at a defenceless and admirable easy target which was unconscionable.

It's doesn't work here for bell's friend and academic to drop the "capitalist" from the phrase "imperialist.....patriarchy". At all. Amy Goodman missing the mark here as well. bell was clear to articulate, in the excerpts shown from her 2006 remarks, "exploitation and oppression"....a distinction that communicates the relationship between capital and labor (exploitation) and the technologies of social and institutional control (oppressions) that fuel and maintain the system. For some, hooks may have inappropriately buried the foundational social relationship that is exploitation within the mechanisms that sustain it....but she was consistent in her analysis of political economy. This clip dubiously erases that political economy. Dubiously.

We as Americans must learn from our pass. So we Can avoid not repeating it in our present or future. Today in America we are living the hypocrisy of historical political lies . That have divided America for over 325 years. The greatest nation on planet earth because of its diversity of people from every continent on earth. Have yet to understand what made it great. It's diversity and everything each minority group have contributed to the greatness of America. That's what makes America the envy of the world .We Regardless of American political party must come together as a country and save our Republic democracy and all branches of American government. Or welcome to fascism dictator ship rule. Truth + Wisdom = Peace ✌ 🙏. Thank you Bail hooks for your constitution to American greatness.

Such a stupid, hateful, telling comment. No matter how much you insult strong women, you're still going to suffer from impotence. Flaccid is your future, impotence is your constant companion. It's not us, it's you.

It’s proper to not capitalize bell hooks because that is the way she wanted it just like e e cummings. The people who read bell hooks are the ones not capitalizing it.
