Hey this Ramsey - we had an ensemble together - at BS of M - checking out you voice leading lesson - I use the same concept to demonstrate that I can make make bop (jazz improv) out of one’s or thirteenths - oddly I’m no good at sharing what I learned from Charlie- I’m only able to teach sort of master classes - I think it might be cause I was self taught till I got to Berklee- Ray was a marvel - Charlie was a miracle - I went bananas with his lessons - ripped though the lesson part so we could play - him playing left hand bass then we would trade 2s or 4s on the tune of the week - he had me doing a transcription a week until he gave me an art Tatum thing - it took me 5 week and he kept complaining that I was taking so long - I finally realized just a couple of years ago that he might been just trying to keep me from being a slacker- he had some other tricks up his sleeve than were crazy brilliant - he’d get you to do the do the lesson/task and you get the gift without knowing what or why the gift was so valuable- one the first things he said was “your in the army now” - good grief what a wonderful person - I so loved him

Oh Garry! This is such a wonderful condensation of many of the exercises we did together (that I still practice all the time!) It's wonderful to hear/see this and think of all I learned from you (and consequentially from Charlie even though we never met). Thank you for taking the time to put this together and for sharing this wisdom. You are a saint.

Gary thanks for making this video about our favourite jazz teacher! One time I told Charlie that I felt I was stuck on four notes, on the famous ear training exercise by him and Charlie said to me “don’t worry man….! Remember the first time you came here and I played one note for ear training and you said: “trumpet”? “ That was Charlie! An amazing teacher and person, always with a great sense of humour. I still have his writing in my exercise book and his little drawings. ❤

Joe Hubbard shared this link in one of his video lessons & wow, it makes so much sense too me. I've isolated tones & used subtractive rhythms in my own way but never was able to put it into words that are useful. I've always loved that logical/mathematical aspect to music! The harmony parts you played really opened my ears as well, making me think ahead, ie, what's possible. Yes, I've made notes as there's a lifetime of study in each fragment! Charlies sense of humour works for me as well & I'm so glad to have listened to your stories Garry...;-)) Best wishes & thanks from England. (PS, I'm a beginner or as Joe puts it, I'm a 1x40 player - played for 1 year 40 times...;-))

All the jazz greats are skilled in the use of the inner voices, esp. Bill Evans which you show.

Thanks so much Gary. You put Charlie back on my radar. As a young student a Berklee, I was in Charlie's queue for private lessons. The day I left Boston, he called me with an open spot. That was a tough call. I followed up with correspondence lessons and was well rewarded. So much valuable information. I believe that knowledge shared increases it's value and with the conversation moving to the web, the value of your videos is unmeasurable. Keep that torch burning Gary!
